This version of this strikingly popular Swedish crime series, which is accurately based on the successful best-sellers written by Henning Mankell, stars the characterful Rolf Lassgard as detective Kurt Wallander. Lassgard was, in fact, the first actor to play this now legendary character (others include Krister Henriksson and Kenneth Branagh).
Lassgard's portrayal of the moody, awkward, troubled individualist, whose overindulgent lifestyle involves too much alcohol and a highly disturbed, sleep-deprived existence, is very talented and is extremely faithful... to Mankell's depiction of Kurt in the novels. This collection - films 27 to 31 - gives us four more of Wallander's complex, puzzling cases shown over 6 episodes of the series; these are Pyramid, Firewall (2 episodes), One Step Behind and The Man Who Smiled (2 episodes).
Once again we are witness to the bumbling, oaf-like Swedish detective, who seems stubbornly inclined to keep his incredible sharpness and intellect completely hidden, going about his gruesome day to day investigative business while at the same time unintentionally decimating any hopes of happiness in his own personal life.
