War Horse, the multi-award nominated film epic directed by Steven Spielberg, is based on the 1982 children's novel of the same name written by Michael Morpurgo. The story is set prior to and during World War I and provides a unique snapshot of this period of history, being centred around a thoroughbred horse called Joey and the people who come into contact with him.
The horse is sold to the British Cavalry and is sent into France prompting Albert, the lad who trained and befriended his beloved horse, to enlist. The plight of this beautiful animal is sensitively... followed and we become witness to the shocking devastation war has on many levels. The harrowing mental trauma, the horrific injuries and the loss of human lives is our usual disturbing take on what happened during the world wars but this film provides us with the story seen from a slightly different angle.

Steven Spielberg directs this drama based on Michael Morpurgo's novel about a boy who searches for his horse after it is taken away to serve in World War I. Growing up in Devon, Albert (Jeremy Irvine) trains his horse, Joey, and forms a strong bond with the animal. Joey is taken from his owner, however, when he is sold to the French as a war horse. Joey touches the hearts of those he meets as he serves in the cavalry. Too young to become a soldier himself, the determined Albert sets off on a journey in the hope that he can save his beloved horse from the horrors of war.
