Ward No. 6 DVD

| DVD

Far on the outskirts of Moscow, Dr. Ragin presides over a mental hospital where thoughtful discussion is in very short supply. His only intellectual stimulation comes from his rich philosophical debates with Gromov, a highly intelligent yet deeply disturbed patient at the asylum. In time, however, Gromov's madness begins to rub off on Dr. Ragin. A bold new take on a literary classic, Ward No. 6 updates the story's original 19th Century setting to present day, and intercuts conversations with actual Moscow mental patients with Chekhov's story to striking effect. Directed... by Karen Shakhnazarov and Alexander Gornovsky, adapted from legendary author Anton Chekhov's haunting short story. [show more]

Russian drama set in a psychiatric ward, adapted from a short story by Anton Chekhov. Vladimir Ilin stars as Dr Ragin, a psychiatric doctor in a suburban hospital who becomes increasingly drawn into deep philosophical discussions with the patients on his ward, particularly Gromov (Aleksey Vertkov), a highly intelligent yet extremely disturbed patient suffering from paranoid delusions. Over time Ragin begins to disengage with reality and neglect his medical duties, begging the question of where the line should be drawn between introspection and insanity. The film transposes the original 19th century setting of Chekhov's story to present-day Moscow, and weaves documentary footage of conversations with real patients into the dramatic narrative.

Please note this is a region 2 DVD and will require a region 2 or region free DVD player in order to play. Simultaneously nihilistic and heartening, Ward No. 6 is based on a story by Chekov, in which a psychiatric doctor becomes a patient in his own asylum. Updated to contemporary Russia, the film is a cocktail of anxieties and riddles, showcasing how easy it is to become what we fear most.
