Frank's lover Johnny gets sent to prison. Offering to help out Frank begins to visit Johnny's mum and soon sees that his beautiful dog Evie is being neglected. Frank's longing for Johnny mutates into love for the dog. He cares with increasing desperation. His war of nerves with Johnny's wife intensifies. He can give poor Evie a good life! Can't Johnny see that? Can't his family see that? Hilarious yet touching the film carefully preserves the stifling discretion of the era.

Gary Oldman and Alan Bates star in this British comedy drama set in the 1950s. When Johnny (Oldman) is sent to jail, he has no choice but to leave his cherished Alsatian, Evie, in the care of his parents and his friend and ex-lover, Frank (Bates). Frank soon becomes very attached to the dog and when he grows concerned about Johnny's parents' mistreatment of Evie, he endeavours to become her sole carer, finding that his affection for the canine is stronger than that for his former partner.
