When lonely Yorkshire schoolteacher Jean Travers (Redgrave) holds a dinner party for her friends Marcia and Stanley Pilborough (Dench and Holm) at her cottage in Wetherby, they arrive accompanied by a stranger, John Morgan (Tim McInnerny) - who unexpectedly returns to Jean's home the next day and commits suicide in front of her. As the police arrive to investigate the mysterious death, memories come back to Jean of a passionate love affair earlier in her life that ended in tragedy.
