  • Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (1 Disc Edition)
Oscar David Huckle 02 Sep 2007

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has finally been released. And is it good? You bet it is!!! I don't care about Mr Gambon any more, but all I want to say that this movie is: THE BEST OF THE 4!!! Directed by Mike Newell and starring the same cast and now inviting Brendan Gleeson(Moody), Ralph Fiennes(Voldemort), David Tennant(Barty Crouch Jr), Roger Llyod Pack(Barty Crouch), Frances De La Tour(Madame Maxime) and Pedja Bjelac(Igor Karkaroff) as new characters brings you the movie of a lifetime. The first correct certification, I must say.
A little concern, Bertha Jorkins was not mentioned, there is no Dursleys, no Ludovic Bagman, no Mrs Weasley, no Dobby, no Winky and where is the explanation by Barty Crouch Jr? But do not let this bother you. It is the quality of the movie that counts. Also, if you read the book, and you are now watching the movie, you completely forget about the missing bits. Mike Newell, please will you direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix or if not, find someone better than you to direct the next film.

  • Danger Diabolik [1968]
    Erin Britton 30 Aug 2007

Danger: Diabolik is something of an earthbound Barbarella, complete with strobe lighting, psychedelic music and a revolving bed. The film opens in an unnamed European country where they speak occasionally badly dubbed English and where the police are being plagued by criminal mastermind Diabolik (John Phillip Law). Determined that Diabolik should not be able to interfere in the latest currency exchange, the police stage a fake security convoy to distract any interested thieves while the real money is being transported in a Rolls Royce that just happened to be leaving the central bank at the same time. Needless to say this doesn"t fool Diabolik for a moment and one quick smoke bomb later we see him and his manic eyebrows atop a crane that is whisking the Rolls away from the bemused police. Diabolik makes a speedy getaway, first by boat and then, ably assisted by his girlfriend/partner in crime Eva (Marisa Mell), in a groovy sports car. The secret lair of Diabolik is a hideaway more Tracy Island than James Bond but at least its interior is certainly a lot more shagadelic than the Bat Cave and provides somewhere for Diabolik and Eva to get intimate with the proceeds of crime. Disappointed that he has once again been failed by the police, the smarmy Minister of Finance (Terry Thomas) decides to force other criminals to turn on Diabolik by reintroducing the death penalty for all manner of crimes. Unfortunately for the Minister, through their awesome powers of wig wearing and nifty choices of sunglasses, Diabolik and Eva infiltrate his press conference and unleash Exhilaration Gas on the massed politicians and members of the Press. His scheme does have some success though and very soon Diabolik is forced to evade both the police and the Mafia as he attempts to steal an emerald necklace that would be just the right gift for Eva"s birthday. Danger: Diabolik is a delightfully kitsch film from Mario Bava and a true joy to watch. The DVD comes with a good selection of extra features: an audio commentary from Diabolik himself, John Phillip Law, and Mario Bava biographer Tim Lucas; a twenty minutes documentary called "Danger: Diabolik - From Fumetti to Film" which chronicles the development of the Diabolik character from his early comic strip days; the video for the Beastie Boys song "Body Movin"" which sampled Danger: Diabolik; a teaser trailer; and the theatrical trailer.

  • Spider-Man 3
    Kevin Stanley 30 Aug 2007

In the third instalment of Spider-Man our friendly neighbour web-slinger is a little less friendly and a lot darker than before. When he gets involved with some extra-terrestrial goo that has landed on Earth on a meteor Spidey (Tobey Maguire) is overtaken by a force that enhances the victim"s evil side. The amazing Spierman turns into the fantastic jerk and he gets no sympathy from his girlfriend, MJ (Kirsten Dunst) either.

Also back on form and looking to crush Spiderman is son of the Green Goblin (and Peter Parker"s ex best pal) Harry Osbourn (James Franco). But after a super high-flying fight with Spidey Osbourn suffers memory loss and doesn"t do much until the end of the film when he has to make a decision to team up with Spidey or team up against him.

New villains come in the transient form of the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), who honestly is a bit of a rubbish villain, and the uber-nasty Venom (Topher Grace) another victim of the space-goo and a former rival photographer at the Daily Bugle.

Comfortable with their roles the cast of Macguire, Dunst and Franco are faultless and all able to bring warmth and humanity to their characters. But that doesn"t stop J.K. Simmons stealing every scene that he appears in as Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson or Bryce Dallas Howard from stunning audiences with a very different (sexier than in The Village) blonde-bombshell look as Peter Parker"s (other) love-interest Gwen Stacey.

There"s emotion, action and humour in equal measure which makes Spiderman 3 an enjoyable and exciting film that"s easy to like and a little different to the first two films. Sam Raimi"s direction is as tight as ever; fast-paced and well edited with action that rarely slows down.

  • Next [2007]
    Kevin Stanley 30 Aug 2007

Just another Philip K. Dick adaptation, or the Next best thing?

After Wickerman and Ghost Rider surely Nicolas Cage was due a decent film? In Next Cage plays Cris Johnson, a Las Vegas showman/magician, who has the extraordinary power - he is able to see two minutes into his own future.

"Every time you look at the future, it changes - because you looked at it." Cage tells us in one of his now, customary, voice-overs. And if you can look into the future and nothing is pre-defined then you can change it.

Naturally, living in Vegas, Johnson partakes in a little bit of blackjack in the casinos to supplement his performing income and it all keeps him in a reasonable amount of pocket-change. So long as he doesn"t draw too much attention to himself he gets on just fine and no one bothers him. But when his "talent" gets spotted by an FBI agent who realises that his foresight could be used by them - to stop a group of terrorists blowing up some US city or other, she tracks him down and tries to enlist his help - either by invitation, or force.

Cage is as compelling as always and Jessica Biel is everything she needs to be for this sort of film; beautiful and alluring, yet clever enough and tough enough to remain believable. Julianne Moore however as the tough-as-they-come and quick-thinking FBI agent doesn"t quite cut it.

Okay, so a lot of the film is a bit dodgy in terms of what the main character can and can"t do and what we might actually believe he might be able to do. But the film, directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day), moves along at a fast enough pace for us not to really think it through carefully enough for it to really matter - so we end up just going along for the ride.

  • The Fountain
    Kashif Ahmed 30 Aug 2007

Unusual is the best word to sum up writer/director Darren Aronofsky's much maligned romantic sci-fi drama. Not dissimilar to Stanislaw Lem's 'Solaris' (though replacing rationality with spirituality) 'The Fountain' is told in three parts with the same characters at different stages in their lives, the stories cleverly converge into one as frantic Dr. Tommy (Hugh Jackman) battles against time to find the cure for cancer in an increasingly desperate bid to save his beloved wife Izzy (Rachel Weisz). Meanwhile, in Izzy's as yet incomplete novel 'The Fountain': medieval Spain suffers under the yoke of The Inquisition, and Queen Isabella (Weisz in all her spangled splendour) appoints conquistador lover Tomas (Jackman sporting an unkempt beard and silly tin hat) to lead an imperial expedition to Central America, deep into Mayan territory to find the so-called tree of life (i.e. the fountain of youth / immortality). Part three, the strangest by far, follows future world Major Tom (Jackman, now with a surprisingly cool 'bald as a coot' look) in a giant bubble, having deep & meaningful conversations with a tree whilst travelling through a nebula which, wait for it, represents 'Xibalba' the Mayan underworld.

And if all this sounds a tad pretentious, it's probably because it is a bit, and though its hard not to smirk when a glow-in-the-dark Tom levitates in the Lotus position, 'The Fountain' is a film with something on its mind, and certainly didn't deserve to be booed at Venice. Granted, its not one to rival 'The Matrix' (Arronofsky began writing this after seeing said film in 1999) and some may dread the Zen incense stick lighting, travels to Thailand, red bracelet wearing, 'Kula Shaker' listening, introspective-navel-gazing-hippy-cults its bound to attract. But at least Arronofsky, still living off the kudos of 'Requiem For A Dream', is working on original ideas, which has to count for something in an industry littered with remakes, comic book and toy-line adaptations.

Now Darren Aronofsky is, I'm told, quite a literary sort, so perhaps someone should've saved him from making the massive faux pas of romanticizing Spain's Queen Isabella. Casting his better half Rachel Weisz in the role is somewhat an ironic oversight; since the medieval monarch was an avowed anti-Semite who, along with King Ferdinand, The Inquisition & Cardinal Xermies, oversaw massacres, forced conversions, expulsions and economic persecutions of thousands of Spaniard Jews, Muslims and Unitarian Christians. Both stories: Dr Tommy in the present day and Queen Isabella in Spain, highlight their respective characters battle against inevitability (though the latter is undermined by its historical / political context). A conflict crystallised when Tommy likens death to a disease which must be defeated by science, whilst the nebula journey represents a shared redemption through the acceptance of a higher power. And though at times its feels as if you"ve got '2001: A Space Odyssey' going on in one section, 'Love Story' in the other and 'Aguirre: The Wrath Of God' in another, 'The Fountain' is ultimately redeemed, not by its palaeosophical pontificating, good SFX, razor sharp editing or snazzy camera moves, but by excellent performances from its leads (Hugh Jackman in particular). Some of the film's finer points are muddied by melodramatic clichés, and perhaps that was the reason behind Brad Pitt's departure from the project in 2004. 'The Fountain' tries to put across a life-lesson that most of us don't particularly like to dwell upon, i.e. its only when one begins to appreciate the harmonious equilibrium between life & death, that they can come to terms with reality & existence. For as the shouty Mayan warrior with the flaming sword repeatedly tells us: "Death is the road to awe"...apparently.

  • Sunshine [2007]
    Lee Shipman 29 Aug 2007

At first, unimpressive cliches spring to mind from the general theme of this film - the world needs saving, and of course a crack team of professionals is sent up to save mankind. Sounds like Armageddon to me, does it not? And not just that, but so many disaster movies. However, in spite of this fairly boring overview, I must say that this surpassed every expectation I had. Intense is just a word, this film ripped me to shreds. By the end of it I'd gripped the seat arms so tightly for at least an hour that I shook leaving the cinema, and the moment I left I thought "Oh man, I am seeing that again".
So yes, it's a disaster movie, but the difference is that you have one of the most interesting directors working to date who is willing to push you way beyond the edge. Danny Boyle really takes this genre to new levels, ones where other disaster movies could only hope to reach. The human element particularly is so emotionally present, without being cheesy or condescending. You can seriously relate to this crew in a way that I never have before in a film. There are no cheesy lines, and there certainly aren't any moments where we take a breather and think "it's ok, everything will turn out fine", this film is raw, relentless and terrifying and it doesn't give in until you're left in a quivering wreck on the floor!
I think the thing that got me was the sheer hopelssness throughout. It's a very sad film, very emotional and it'll really stay with you for a long time. It gets into your head. The cinematography is immense, Boyle really outdoes himself with this, there are so many tricks and illusions that you start not knowing what's real.
Overall, a cracking film. You know when you look at the sun and close your eyes really tight, you can still see it on the inside of your eyelids? A fairly cringey metaphor for it, but that's what it's like with this film, it just won't leave you. I went to see it twice. I wish I'd gone more. Watch this film you won't regret it!

  • A Prairie Home Companion [2006]
    Bill 28 Aug 2007

This film grabs you gently, charmingly but inexplicably, why is it so engaging? Towards the start, the scene where they are chatting about old jingles, the curtain goes up, and out of nowhere they start performing is a magic moment which you might keep replaying. Do Wood Harrelson, Meryl Streep and the other stars really sing that well, they are brilliant. The story is gentle, slightly surreal, but totally engaging, and the music is wonderful. I'm off to buy the soundtrack. Bye the way, the show the film is about actually exists.

  • 28 Weeks Later [2007]
    Luke Morris 28 Aug 2007

the most realistic zombie ever, much better than 28 Days Later- that was good but watching 28 weeks later in the cinema I truley jumped out of my wits and almost screamed like a little girl as it was really scary. The idea that it's set in England with running zombies is so creepy that you could believe or amaging it happening (i so hope it doesn't) after the first 10 minutes of them raiding the house and Robert being chased by hundreds off them made mine and will make your heart beat as if it's about to burst out of your chest. The scarest horror film of the year...10/10

  • Halloween [1978]
    Luke Morris 28 Aug 2007

The most perfect/non-gore but scary horror ever made,
it's story is simple but it is ultra creepy and full of suspense, if you won't to be scared this is the one. It's my favourite slasher/horror film ever made considering that I have over 300 horror movies John Carpenter's Halloween is the cult classic film ever.

The rest of the series are also brilliant but it's this one that will give you a One Good Scare.

  • Freedom Writers [2007]
    Cornish Pasty 20 Aug 2007

Simply Brilliant, superbly acted. It's another 'Music of the Heart'
One of those films that really makes you think. If you think you have problems, then look around you, everyone else has them too in their own little world, what happens when we combine those problems and share them, it seems we're all in the same boat after all.
Hilary Swank puts in a superb performance as Erin, or 'Miss G', an up and coming teacher who thinks she can solve all the problems. Not helped by Imelda Stauntons stand in the way of progress colleague - turns out with a little effort ,Miss G's not doing too badly. A Lesson to be learned here I think. Erin G for President!!!

  • Blades of Glory (2007)
    Kevin Stanley 17 Aug 2007

Will Ferrell is Chazz Michael Michaels, the bad-boy of competitive figure skating. Jon Heder is Jimmy MacElroy, his most skilled rival. Chazz has probably spent most of his life with fast women, frequenting rock concerts and drugged up or drunk out of his mind. Jimmy on the other hand has spent his whole life in the care of his adopted billionaire father who trained him for glory since he showed an aptitude for skating at an early age.

A fierce rivalry drives these two oddballs, who couldn"t be more different, to compete against one another. Michaels is the American sex-addicted, leather-trouser-wearing, self-proclaimed rockstar of skating. MacElroy is the Scandinavian blonde-haired, fey young man wearing peacock feathers and pastel coloured leotards.

They trash-talk each other and exchange taunts, not even willing to acknowledge each others talent. When they tie for the Gold medal of a major competition they begin a fight on the podium that spills over onto the ice in front of millions of fans worldwide. The pair are disgraced and banned forever from competitive men's singles skating.

Fast forward three-and-a-half years. The next major tournament is just six months away and both men are shadows of their former selves. Michaels is overweight and drinking even more heavily than before and Jimmy is in nowhere town. Both of them are in pathetic, humdrum jobs.

In a perfect example of movie-contrivance a loophole in the rules is found and Michaels and MacElroy team up, to their total abhorrence, to skate in the pairs event. Can they put aside personal differences to win the gold? And will they master the lethal oriental Iron Lotus skating move?

In Blades of Glory, as he always seems to be these days, Will Ferrell is on top comedy form. And Jon Heder, who quite honestly annoyed me in Nepolean Dynamite, also shines. Heder tones down the geekiness just enough to make him tolerable and between them they make Blades of Glory the funniest film of the year so far.

Simply for the amount of laughs in this film it's got to be highly recommended. It"s a perfect popcorn movie that moves along nicely and doesn"t last too long. You"ll never need to take your brain out of first gear and when you leave the cinema you"ll still be laughing and saying how silly, but enjoyable, the film was. It"ll also be a good addition to your DVD collection as no doubt there will be plenty of extra material on offer and commentaries from Ferrell and Heder.

  • Aerial Britain - The West Country From The Air [2003]
    Naomi Turner 16 Aug 2007

This DVD gives 50 minutes of sublime pleasure as the viewer is taken on an aerial tour of the West Country. The photography is excellent with distance and close-up views of what must be some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Highlights include Glastonbury Tor, Lundy Island, St Michael's Mount, and the Scilly Isles, with close-ups of several stately homes and famous gardens. The camera takes us on a journey along the River Tamar, the Chedda Gorge, then follows the train from Exeter to Torbay where we are given a spectacular view of Torquay harbour. There are two bonus features, an aerial trip around Bath and a journey from Weston-Super-Mare to Weymouth which include the city of Wells. I cannot wait to buy other films in the same series of aerial Britian.

  • Doctor Who - Series 3 Vol. 4
    Jordan Ashley 16 Aug 2007

This DVD sees the return, regeneration and death of the master all in three episodes, it also throws Captian Jack Harness back into and out of the doctor life as in an attempt to shake Jack off the exterior of the Tardis leads to the end of the universe where the kind professor Yana is trying to save the last of the humans from the end of the universe by taking them to utopia.
John Barrowman provides some comedy in utopia wich was one of the darkest episodes of the revived series with his constant flirting.
David Tennant's performence when he finds out that professor is a time lord is great and John Simm's version of the master although has some great acting the character is far too funny and generally not evil for the master while Derek Jacobi porvides a darker more traditional Master.
The Sound of drums see's David Tennant and John Barrowman on top form as the doctor is stripped of his tardis and is forced into hiding in a abandoned and bleak warehouse.
By the end of the episode the doctor is aged and thousands of toflaca descend on the earth everything is up to the Martha Jones
Last of the time lords takes a very predictable turn by fast forwarding to a year later with the master planning of universal domination with complete control of the earth, and Jack chained up, and the doctor aged and hopeless.
The thrilling ending see's both John simm and David Tennant giving brilliant emotional preforences as the doctor revives himself by tuning himself into the archangel network and getting every one to say one word, doctor.
