The Day The World Ended | DVD | (27/05/2002)

| RRP A far-fetched combination of psychological thriller and over-the-top horror movie, The Day the World Ended is a brash, rather ham-fisted piece of work. With Nastassja Kinski leading the cast, the odds were never on this being an example of great cinema, but Terence Gross's film is exceptionally ridiculous in parts. The director manages to pull a range of clichés out of the bag, from the Lynchian small-town American weirdos to the handy thunder storm during moments of high drama. The premise of a lonely, gifted child hiding a dark secret has been explored before but never quite to such a bizarre extent--the events involved here leading to a gory, tasteless finale. Kinski sleepwalks her way through her role with little conviction, matched by Randy Quaid's caricature villain. Much is made of the special effects skills of Stan Winston (Jurassic Park, Terminator 2), but without any degree of budget, his efforts are merely terrifyingly ordinary. On the DVD: one thing becomes clear from the DVD version of the film--despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the makers of The Day the World Ended consider it a fine example of the genre. The audio commentary from producers Winston and Shane Mahan is especially self-reverential, even going so far at one point as to praise the film's great character acting. A hectic visual style and suitably monstrous sound effects it may have (all admittedly enhanced by the digital format), but great character acting it does not. Likewise, there is an in-depth feature on the rather shoddy special effects. The last thing anybody wanted, the earnest voiceover tells us, was for the monster to look like some guy in a rubber suit. --Phil Udell

Gothika | DVD | (13/09/2010)
from £7.47
| Saving you £2.52 (33.73%)
| RRP The title of Gothika prepares you for a spooky, atmospheric thriller with an emphasis on supernatural mystery. The best way to appreciate the movie itself is to understand that it's a waking nightmare that needn't make sense in the realm of sanity. Making a flashy Hollywood debut after his superior 2000 thriller The Crimson Rivers, French actor-director Mathieu Kassovitz pours on the dark and stormy atmosphere, trapping a competent psychologist (Halle Berry) in the prison ward where she treated inmates (including Penelope Cruz) until she was committed for killing her husband (Charles S. Dutton), who was also her boss. Did a car crash cause her to suffer ghostly delusions, or is a young girl--dead for four years--sending clues from beyond the grave? Berry has to prove her innocence while Kassovitz keeps everything--including the viewer and costar Robert Downey Jr. (as Berry's colleague)--in the dark about just where the nonsensical plot is leading. There's a better movie in here somewhere, among the catwalks and crannies of the impressive prison-castle setting, and Berry gives 100% in a performance that's consistent with the movie's overwrought tone. Attentive viewers will identify the killer early on, and the ending is anticlimactic, but Gothika serves up a few good shocks for ghost-story connoisseurs. --Jeff Shannon

Bram Stoker's Shadowbuilder | DVD | (17/06/2002)

| RRP Father Vassey (Michael Rooker) has a problem. Using his two 9mm, laser-sighted cannons, he has tracked down and killed the holders of a heretic ceremony meant to bring a demon into the world. Not just any demon, for this one's reason to be is nothing less than uncreating creation. The problem is, Vassey's too late. The demon has manifested and escaped, and is now on the hunt for the soul of a young boy who is believed to be saint material, due to the stigmata he had at birth. The film is directed by Jamie Dixon, heretofore a special effects supervisor, who shows canny restraint where special effects are concerned. The shadowy demon of the title is depicted often by a fluid black cloud, which is functional without losing its eeriness or credibility. The acting is solid, never campy, though Michael Rooker sometimes feels out of place. And the climactic scenes, built up to with good pacing, are fraught with peril and excitement. All in all, this is a worthwhile effort for a first-time director, and that makes it one of the best direct-to-video releases I've seen in quite a long time. I just wish I could locate the Bram Stoker story it's supposed to be based on. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

The 39 Steps | DVD | (01/10/1999)
from £23.73

| RRP Hitchcock's first great romantic thriller is a prime example of the "macguffin" principle in action. Robert Donat is Richard Hannay, an affable Canadian tourist in London who becomes embroiled in a deadly conspiracy when a mysterious spy winds up murdered in Hannay's rented flat--and both the police and a secret organisation wind up hot on his trail. With only a seemingly meaningless phrase ("the 39 steps"), a small Scottish town circled on a map, and a criminal mastermind identified by a missing finger as clues, quick-witted Hannay eludes police and spies alike as he works his way across the countryside to reveal the mystery and clear his name. At one point he finds himself making his escape manacled to blonde beauty Pamela (Madeleine Carroll), whose initial antagonism is smoothed by Hannay's charm. It's classic Hitchcock all the way, a seemingly effortless balance of romance and adventure set against a picturesque landscape populated by eccentrics and social-register smoothies, none of whom is what he or she appears to be. Hitchcock would play similar games of innocents plunged into deadly conspiracies, most delightfully in North by Northwest, but in this breezy 1935 classic, Hitch proves that, as in any quest, the object of the search isn't nearly as satisfying as the journey. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
