Children Of The Corn 1, 2 and 3 Collectors Edition Pack | DVD | (12/08/2002)

| RRP A box set that assembles the first three entries (of six, so far) in the Stephen King-derived minor horror franchise, Children of the Corn: The Collector's Edition puts three not-really-very-good horror pictures together into a fairly satisfying junk food platter than works okay as a demented four-and-a-half-hour miniseries. In the 1984 original, Linda Hamilton and her dead-loss husband are stranded in Gatlin, a small town in Nebraska where the children have formed a cult around the mysterious "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" and slaughtered all the adults. It has a certain creepy atmosphere in the early sections, but degenerates into a pointless run-around, with characters doing silly things that get them into further peril. Strangely, the sequels play better. In the 1992 The Final Sacrifice, a journo and his estranged son show up to delve into the Gatlin story, and one of the surviving cultists reorganises the gruesome business, with a few special effects hints that give a bit more form to the monster villain. And the 1994 Urban Harvest has another Gatlin kid adopted by a Chicago commodities broker and raising a patch of sinister corn in a backlot; this has a no-name cast and the usual dumb script, but make-up man Screaming Mad George stages some impressively gruesome stuff with a killer scarecrow and murderous cornstalks before finally bringing "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" on-screen as a Thing-ish vegetable monster whose rampage provides this set with something like a big finish. Incredibly, there are three more Corn sequels out there, presumably saved for a follow-up collection. On the DVD: Children of the Corn: The Collector's Edition's first film is in 16:9 anamorphic, though the original elements aren't in pristine condition and the soundtrack is mono; the 4:3 full screen sequels look sharper and have stereo to show off the Omen-like chanting scores. The only extras are "theatrical trailers", though parts two and three almost certainly didn't play in any theatres. --Kim Newman

| RRP Sex and violence - a lethal combination. If the maker merges the two convincingly it could generate tremendous excitement for the Indian cinegoer who's not experienced much of this genre on the big screen. Guddu Dhanoa uses sex and violence as the theme for 'Hawa'. The result is a fare that has immense shack-value as well as titillation to bring in the hoi polloi. After her husband walks out on her Sanjana (tabu) shifts to a hill station with her two children and brother. However strange things begin to occur in the otherwise peaceful surroundings. The first night she finds the doors and windows of her mansion open giving an impression that someone has sneaked into her house. The next night her dog disappears but the pet resurfaces the next night. However the pet attacks Sanjana the moment he spots her. The subsequent night shatters Sanjana's life - she is raped! Sanajana is sexually assaulted by 'something' that she can feel but cannot see! Her childhood friend refers her to a psychiatrist who considers Sanjana to be a case of split personality. Things then go from bad to worse when Sanjana is raped in front of her children one night. On another night while returning from work the spirit attacks her again and worse this time. It even takes away her youngest daughter. The rest of the story traces her efforts to get her daughter back and solve the mystery. The rapes - the premise on which the film stands - have been depicted without resorting to body exposure vulgarity or titilation. The rape scenes have all been executed with panache.

Stir of Echoes | DVD | (03/10/2005)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP The only real problem with Stir of Echoes has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with unlucky coincidence. Adapted from a Richard Matheson novel, this film arrived around the same time as The Sixth Sense. Surface similarities made it suffer by cursory comparison and the competing film's phenomenal success. It's a pity, because this one features one of Kevin Bacon's best performances, in a psychological thriller that makes a lot more right moves than wrong ones. Bacon plays a blue-collar guy who laments his ordinary life, only to learn, when his sister-in-law (Ileanna Douglas) hypnotizes him, that he is a "receiver" capable of seeing spirits and split-second glimpses of past and future events. It's a torturous gift to have--especially since his friendly Chicago neighbourhood possesses a dark secret--and Bacon plays the role with an appropriate mixture of obsession and internalised torment. Similarity to The Sixth Sense applies only to the basic premise and the character of Bacon's young son. Otherwise, this is more of a hard-edged journey of self-discovery, marital crisis, and recovery, with Bacon's wife (played by the highly underrated Kathryn Erbe) involved in an underdeveloped sub-plot about a group of people who share Bacon's gift as paranormal "receivers". Furthering his career as a writer-director of intelligent thrillers, David Koepp makes a few mis-steps in pacing and thematic overkill, but overall Stir of Echoes is a sharp, sensitive thriller that unfolds to reveal a dramatically satisfying solution to its mystery. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
