The second instalment of the popular Japanese anime, Bubblegum Crisis 2 contains the fourth, fifth and sixth episodes of the eight original videos. In a devastated high-tech Tokyo of a Blade Runner-ish future, four beautiful women disguised by their heavily armed exoskeletons protect society from killer androids and from an ambitious corporation that tries to take over the world, while also having complicated personal lives. The cute teenager NeNe always has a crush on someone or other; flighty Linna has to fit her superhero life into a busy social schedule; and Priss has her career as a rock singer as well as a habit of feeling emotional. Only the austere Sylia is entirely in control of her life--so much so that she needs the others for a bit of productive chaos. In the episodes included they deal with a mysterious car that is riding down motorcyclists, help a tragic android who is vampirising citizens to feed a damaged friend and cope with attempts by an evil conspirator to frame them for mass mayhem. The stories rely rather too heavily on extended sequences of fast bikes and car racing, or mechanised bodysuits and big robots tearing each other apart, but the plotting can be subtle and the emotional scenes tense and fraught. Someone trying to get a sense of anime's strengths and weaknesses could do a lot worse than start here. On the DVD: the disc is presented in a visual aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and has a very loud Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack which presents every screech of tortured metal vehemently and every pounding anthem in the slightly pompous score. There are no extras apart from a very extended documentation of the credits. --Roz Kaveney

Inspired by The Decameron, World-Cinema greatests, Fellini, Visconti and De Sica lend their extraordinary talents to make these slice-of-life stories revolving around the sex games of the middle class. Working-class lovers marry but must hide it from her employer; plus, they need a room of their own. A billboard of Anita Ekberg provocatively selling milk gives a prudish crusader for public decency more than he can handle. The wife of a count whose escapades with call girls make the front page of the papers decides to work to prove her independence, but what is she qualified to do? A buxom carnival-booth manager who owes back taxes offers herself for one night in a lottery: a nerdy sacristan and a jealous suitor make for a lovers' triangle. In each, women take charge, albeit not always successfully ! Extras: Sophia, yesterday, today and tomorrow: a candid intimate interview with Sophia Loren with exclusive footage of her family, close friends and collaborators such as Woody Allen, Giorgio Armani and others New HD material, finally doing justice to the filmmaker's original vision New improved subtitles Exclusive Documentary on Sophia Loren

Fellini's first colour film is an homage to his real-life wife, Giulietta Masina who gives a superb yet nuanced performance in this stunning cinema classic. Giulietta plays her namesake, a bored, timid and unfulfilled wife who, suspecting her husband's infidelity, enters a surreal fantasy journey of self-discovery filled with dreams and fantasies. Much of her fantasies involve her sexually liberated neighbour Suzy, played by Sandra Milo (Fellini's lover in real life!! - those Italians can be so adult' about things!) Fellini becomes Felliniesque - and for the 1st time, in colour! emphasised as always though by a delightful whimsical Nino Rota score.
Made in Spain while General Franco was still in power and shown clandestinely, Pere Portabella's extraordinary Vampir Cuadecuc ostensibly follows the filming of Jess Franco's shocker El conde Dracula (Count Dracula, 1970) starring Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom and the exquisite Soledad Miranda. This experimental 'making of' documentary and investigation into the myth of the vampire, becomes a powerful political metaphor for bloodthirsty fascism epitomised by Franco and tyrants like him, a witty allegory with Dracula as the dictator whose demise is certain. Dispensing almost entirely with dialogue, Portabella utilises an abstract, fabulously idiosyncratic soundscape created by renowned Catalan artist and musician Carles Santos. The effect is surreal and wondrous to behold. Our release is presented from a new HD transfer of the film and features a new and exclusive interview with director Pere Portabella, plus two short films and more. DVD SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS: Vampir Cuadecuc (1971) presented from a new HD restoration from original materials A new interview with director Pere Portabella A new filmed introduction by Will Fowler Pere Portabella s experimental short films La Tempesta (2003) and No Al No (2006).
