Footage from a 1981 live performance from Alberta Hunter.
Between 1977 and 1980 Chic produced some of the most successful and memorable music of the disco era. Their sublime blend of soul funk and disco took a genre not best remembered for musical innovation and longevity to new heights. Phenomenally-successful their biggest single 'Le Freak' topped the US charts in 1978 for an amazing five weeks selling over four million copies and becoming Atlantic Records' biggest-ever single. Chic's creative nucleus was always the writer/musician partnership of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. They subsequently both enjoyed considerable success as producers working with such pop legends as David Bowie Diana Ross Mick Jagger and Madonna. One of the duo's first production success stories was the girl group Sister Sledge. Teaming up with Rodgers and Nile in 1979 they produced two of the best-selling anthems of the disco era 'We Are Family' and 'He's The Greatest Dancer'. Recorded in April 1996 at Tokyo's famed Budokan Stadium this was destined to be the group's last performance since sadly Bernard Edwards died shortly afterwards. The group is joined by Sister Sledge for stellar performances of that group's two biggest hits He's The Greatest Dancer and We Are Family both of which were written and produced by Rodgers and Edwards. Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash makes a guest appearance and solos on 'Le Freak'. Despite their 20-plus years in the music business One Night in Paris demonstrates that Depeche Mode are by no means dinosaurs of synth-infused rock. While they could have easily ended up on the retro tour conveyor belt, as many of their early-80s contemporaries have, they have always managed to remain relevant. Directed by long-time artistic collaborator Anton Corbijn the concert footage concisely captures the atmosphere of the show which was seen by over 1.5 millions fans in 2001. Though there is an obsessive focus on the half-naked Gahan and the "fallen-angel" Gore throughout, at various points the camera withdraws to expose a huge screen at the back of the stage. Combined with the angry stage lighting, the projection films (which include footage of a goldfish swimming in a tank for "In Your Room") provide an added epic feel. Predominantly made up of songs from Exciter, the track-listing also includes old favourites such as "Enjoy the Silence" and "Personal Jesus". On the DVD: One Night in Paris' visual and audio material is of an excellent quality, which further enriches the strong live performances. The bonus material on the second disc (particularly the interviews with the band and tour crew) neatly complements the material on the first disc. However, the 50-minute commentary (which is more like a short-course on the practicalities of photography) by Corbijn is dull and over-indulgent. Watched independently of the concert footage, the stage projections also make lacklustre viewing. If the bonus material had been selected more sparingly all of the items could have been combined on one disc making a more succinct package. --John Galilee

Including footage from Miami, Ibiza, the Berlin Love Parade and elsewhere, Ministry of Sound's The Annual 2003 is an excellent round-up of some of the year's best moments in dance (although it's a year in advance of its title), to the point that you can almost forgive the brand's association with "corporate clubbing", extending as it does from headphones to hoodies. The music comes from 2 Heads, M001, Julie McKnight, Distant Soundz, Hi-Gate and several others. The notorious Ministry mixes are often derided, but this one holds up pretty well. One of the best features on the DVD is the optional visual presentation of the 72-minute main feature--you can choose to watch either the reportage footage or a bloopy graphic mix. The latter isn't the best--check out The Shamen DVD Collection (seriously) for that--but it's a great value-adding concept. On the DVD: The Annual 2003 has special features that are not only very good but are really as central to the enjoyment of the package as the main bit. They include interviews with Fergie, Paul van Dyk, Danny Howells and Freq Nasty and a trailer for the mixing-for-fun BPM console game. As well as the alternative visual streams there are stereo or 5.1 surround sound options and subtitles in five languages, all of which is commendably unskimpy. --Roger Thomas
