Celebrate Christmas with the Teletubbies!
Though Hits out of Hell shares the title of Meat Loaf's 1984 greatest hits album, the tracklisting is not quite the same: curiously, the DVD omits "Dead Ringer for Love", "Midnight at the Lost and Found" and "All Revved Up with No Place to Go", but includes, perhaps by way of compensation, "More Than You Deserve" and "If You Really Want To". Such considerations are, of course, of only superficial importance: once producer and songwriter Jim Steinman had patented the Meat Loaf template on 1977's 30-million-selling Bat Out of Hell--an engagingly preposterous synthesis of Springsteen's Born to Run, Spector's Be My Baby, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries", Led Zeppelin IV and the Broadway musical--he didn't tinker much with the formula. The video clips that accompany the songs tend either to be workmanlike "live" performances or complicated mini-operas--the latter have not dated tremendously well. On the DVD: This DVD offers a choice of Dolby Surround Sound or PCM Stereo, and has a refreshingly simple and easy to navigate menu offering instant access to different tracks. The special features are desultory in the extreme: a brief biography of the Meat Loaf phenomenon and a discography. --Andrew Mueller

Of all the performers and musicians who grew out of the 1960s British counterculture only Marc Bolan achieved the type of salacious superstardom that so many of his contemporaries equally yearned for but never achieved. It is often forgotten just how enormous Bolan was during the early 1970s but with the possible exception of David Bowie a couple of years later it was the man christened Mark Feld who most succinctly crossed enough boundaries to become the favoured artist for both the record buying public at large and the serious critics alike during the first half of the 1970s. This two disc set features a fascinating documentary film tracing the life and career of Marc Bolan from his days as a Mod in mid 1960s London to the day he so sadly passed away at the age of just 28 following a horrific car accident in 1977.
Stripped to the bare essentials, and the antithesis of Pink Floyd's epic live performances, David Gilmour in Concert is a low-key, classy affair. Using footage from 2001's Meltdown Concert and his Royal Festival Hall show in 2002, Gilmour performs a mix of solo compositions and Floyd classics. Opening with a lengthy acoustic version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", the show gradually gathers momentum as "Fat Old Sun" and "High Hopes" are tackled. Other legends such as Richard Wright and Bob Geldof make guest appearances, with Geldof providing complementary vocals for the second live version of "Comfortably Numb" featured. "Shine On" is also reprised mid-way, this time with added backing band, choir and electric guitar. Resembling more a classical than a rock concert, the audience attentively soak up Gilmour's performance, politely clapping at the right moments and never doing anything as undignified as standing up (although there are the occasional cat-calls). It's an excellent live recording that should appeal to all Gilmour's fans. On the DVD: David Gilmour in Concert on disc enhances the exclusivity and quality of the performances with crisp 5.1 surround (an ordinary stereo soundtrack is also available) and an anamorphically enhanced picture. --John Galilee

A concert documentary from 1970, Elvis: That's the Way it Is captures Elvis Presley midway through a fateful transition, seeking to reclaim his musical primacy after a decade of self-imposed exile from concert stages. Sidelined by his big-screen career, eclipsed by rock's mid-60s transformations, the King had begun his return two years earlier with the relatively lean attack of his fabled network television appearance, 68 Comeback Specia. Now the Memphis legend was poised to reposition his performing profile by pursuing the top rungs of headliner status in Las Vegas, a career choice that seems even more ephemeral in hindsight than it already did at the time. That's the Way it Is follows the show's genesis from rehearsal to stage, with the performance footage that provides its inevitable climax shot over six nights. The rehearsal footage, expanded for this special edition, offers further proof that Presley's band was simply superb: stripped of the orchestrations and lush choral arrangements that would be grafted onto the stage show, the sextet sounds both tough and nimble. In performance, we're treated to a mostly riveting glimpse of Presley in top vocal form, poised at the brink of bombast. This is Elvis before the onset of portentous Richard Strauss overtures, karate kicks and tossed scarves, kicking off the show with the classic "That's All Right". If he risks undercutting the punch of his early songs with self-deprecating clowning, he attacks two Ray Charles classics with gusto. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

Recorded at their 2000 Wembley dates, Familiar To Millions celebrates not just nearly a decade of dominance by the Oasis lads but also the fact that it is still actually possible to get them on the same stage at the same time. Moreover, while the band certainly had their troubles prior to arriving at the Twin Towers (not least Noel Gallagher's decision to stay at home for many European dates), this finds all concerned on blistering form with even the newer band members sounding like they were born to play with the monobrowed ones. The chosen set list also wisely skimps on selections from their recent work preferring instead to concentrate on the likes of "Cigarettes And Alcohol", "Wonderwall", "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Champagne Supernova" and a superb Noel-sung version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My". The actual concert footage itself, though, is the only the tip of the iceberg, with special features including a discography, graphics that were specially filmed for the dates, multicamera angles on Cigarettes & Alcohol and a documentary by Grant Gee, previously responsible for Radiohead's Meeting People Is Easy documentary. The most entertaining aspect of this DVD by far, however, is a Gary Crowley-conducted pre-gig interview with the siblings in which ex-cokehead Noel gleefully admits that he can remember absolutely nothing whatsoever about recording (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. --Warren Wayans
