Live by Request is, most certainly, a live recording of KD Lang, though nobody in the audience seems to do much requesting. Taped in December 2000 in New York, it shows Lang and her band before a smallish audience, rattling out a few of her better-known songs and some of Lang's generally creditable readings of standards, in between interruptions from a host who walks Lang through brief discussions of her career and influences. Listening to Lang sing is, of course, no hardship: few indeed are the vocalists who can mix it with the legacies of Roy Orbison ("Crying") and Patsy Cline ("Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray") and emerge with dignity intact, never mind reputation enhanced. That said, whatever intensity there may have been about the show on the night has not translated to this recording, and this is little more than a succession of polite performances greeted by polite applause. On the DVD: The picture format is the 4:3 television standard, and there are three sound modes to choose from (Dolby Digital Surround, DTS Surround, PCM Stereo). The menu of songs is easily navigable, but there are disappointingly no bonus features. --Andrew Mueller

The outrage surrounding the violent content in Madonnas video for What It Feels Like for a Girl is a bit of a controversy itself. Look at any episode of any cop show filmed during the last 25 years and youll effortlessly find more car crashes and human assault containing far less artful context than director Guy Ritchie (Madonnas husband) injects here. Madonna plays something of a femme fatale Robin Hood who removes a blank-faced elderly woman from a nursing home and, with the old lady sitting shotgun, races around town in a yellow vintage Camaro wreaking havoc on unsuspecting males. She crashes into a car containing leering young men, stun-guns a fat-cat fellow at an ATM, gives his cash to a waitress at a drive-in, and steals another hotrod after shes banged up her own. While enjoying a milkshake with her octogenarian partner-in-crime, she pulls out a pistol and aims it at the heads of two stupefied-looking policemen (but she doesnt spray them with bullets--the weapon is a squirt gun). The Thelma and Louise-themed video hints that the entire scenario is imagined by the old woman, who fantasises vengeance for a lifetime of indignities suffered. Satisfying, yes. Outrageous, hardly. --Beth Massa, Amazon.com

Tift Merritt says ''I think music is about the pursuit of joy even the sad song and it feels really great to get those feelings out.'' As one critic wrote she expresses those feelings with a voice that ''is a magical combination of cool reserve and effortless warmth.'' This performance recorded on October 20 2005 followed the release of Tambourine the follow-up to her acclaimed debut Bramble Rose. She admits she was listening to a lot of Aretha Franklin and Van Morrison at the time and was inspired to create ''a kind of rock-soul throw down '' as she puts it ''honest songs in an intense highly charged setting.'' Born and bred and still biding her time along the North Carolina coast Tift''s songs can range from quiet and introspective to gritty sexy and energetic roots rock - with a healthy dose of Muscle Shoals soul and hints of country. Her soulful side shines here with her Dusty Springfield-inspired ''Good Hearted Man '' while her crazy/sexy side rules on ''I Am Your Tambourine.'' ''As a singer you''ve got to go for it especially on songs like that '' she says. ''It feels so good to do it to sing songs that are soulful in a powerful way.'' She''s got the perfect voice for it. Strong and distinctive - creatively musically and lyrically. Besides Dusty Tift''s other influences include Delaney and Bonnie and the legendary Carole King. She learned from the way they blended R&B roots and soul with great songs. Through all her music runs a threat of honesty and intensity that brings her fans the same joy that she herself loves to pursue.
