Continuing to combine visuals from imaginative digital animators with a soundtrack by electronic dance music's leading artists and DJs the X-Mix series had by the mid-90s become continental clubland's visual materials of choice. As the series matured the animations began moving from abstraction into stand-alone virtual landscapes. Beyond The Heavens to a mix of classic groovy techno sculpted by the UK's Dave Angel had a futuristic almost sinister atmosphere. It includes crucial tunes by Kenny Larkin Sun Electric Josh Wink Ian Pooley and Dave Angel himself. Digital deserts and industries of the imagination were explored on Wildstyle where the sounds were provided by Munich's DJ Hell - a decade of underground techno and house fashioned into one long mix and including crucial tracks such as Bernard Badie's Can You Feel It Bobby Konder's Let There be House and Phortune's Can You Feel The Bass. The Electric Storm supplied further flights of computer-animated fancy - digital worlds orchestrated to a long morphing mix from The Shamen's Mr C. Both a voyage into virtuality and a journey into the spirit of the beat. 'It's about human evolution' said Mr C.

There are fans of the Who and then there are completist-collector-fans of the Who; the latter are likely to prize The Who EP, a fun glimpse of the band in action on late-1960s German television. One of several DVD-EP titles from Classic Pictures (the "EP" is borrowed from the music industry's old "extended player" designation for recordings featuring four tracks), this one includes black-and-white, heavily solarised television footage of Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, and John Entwistle gamely lip-synching their way through "I'm a Boy", "See Me, Feel Me", "Pinball Wizard" and "I'm Free". There's little more: a bit of pop-up information ("The band achieved international fame with Tommy"), and maybe a dozen abridged clips (teaser plugs, really) from other DVD-EPs for Leon Russell, Jack Bruce, Motorhead, and others. The latter performances are fun but it's annoying to see them cut off after a minute or less. --Tom Keogh

Ever wondered what happened to the "fourth Beatle"? Ringo Starr has spent much of the time since 1989 on the road with his All-Starr Band, a flexible line-up of musicians from the 1960s and 70s--somewhere between a backing band and a rock and roll circus. The Best of Ringo Starr covers five stages of the band's concerts, featuring Starr--in close-cropped and pony-tailed guises--singing and/or drumming his way through a fair selection from The Beatles' back catalogue, alternating with "star turns" from the other band members. There's Dr John in full-on Mardi Gras attire; Nils Lofgren's precision power-playing; Todd Rundgren in send-up mode; Jack Bruce and Peter Frampton striking sparks in "Sunshine of Your Love"; Gary Booker turning an ever "Whiter Shade of Pale" and, as a grand finale, Ringo leading from the front in a stadium sing-along of "With a Little Help from My Friends". The vocals haven't improved from his handful of Beatles leads, but there's no denying his commitment and enthusiasm in pursuit of a good time. There's some amusing backstage footage of well-seasoned pros genuinely having fun. But then, Ringo was always the entertainer. What would you think if he sang out of tune? It scarcely matters... --Richard Whitehouse
