Founded in 1968 by Ray Sawyer and Dennis Locorriere Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show quickly gained a reputation as one of the craziest bands in the world on the back of their cheerfully drunken performances in the trucker bars of the Southern States. Dr. Hook bridged the gap from country music through to rock and pop and although their live shows had their share of comedy and the band were renowned for their raunchy sense of humour they were also noted for their first class musicianship and vocals. This DVD filmed at the legendary Musikladen Studios in Germany features an outstanding live performance of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. Tracklisting: 1. Sylvia's Mother 2. Marie Laveaux 3. This superb previously unreleased DVD is a valuable historic document of the band's earliest live footage in existence. A full live set caught on camera of the American leg of the M80 concert in Minneapolis, Indiana (September 1979), offering an early candid snapshot of the group. Includes two early live songs (both compositions by original bassist Jermey Harrington) - Fly Me To The Moon and Viva Death Row. Also includes amazingly revealing sleeve notes written by the enigmatic lead vocalist Bid himself. Released to coincide with the band's European Tour in 2013. The Monochrome Set originally formed in 1978 from the remnants of a college group called The B-Sides (whose members had included Stuart Goddard, a.k.a. Adam Ant). The post-punk band is notable for its witty lyrics, the laconic delivery of lead singer Bid and the idiosyncratically retrogressive playing style of original lead guitarist Lester Square. The live footage contained in this DVD is so important, not only because it offers an early candid snapshot of the group, but also because it captures a musical fire and edginess inherent to only a few bands of that era. It is both a time capsule and a true joy to witness. Inspired at a very early age by his piano playing mother and sister Frank Mills learned to master the instrument by ear whilst still at school. It was there that he took up his second (and possibly more accomplished instrument) the trombone. At 18 he entered the McGill University in Montreal where he began to study pre-med but became disillusioned with studying and opted to join the Navy. Fatefully it was whilst he was on his way to the recruitment office that he bumped into a f
From their arrival at Heathrow to backstage at The Hammersmith Odeon this film follows the group on their infamous first visit to London. The only American supergroup to rival The Beatles talk us through their early days when three brothers a cousin and a high school friend began their surfing harmony group. This amazing documentary covers their achievements with 'Pet Sounds' and the difficulties Brian Wilson had with the unreleased 'Smile' album. Brian's 'Teenage Symphony To God' was said to be the greatest unreleased album ever made and in this film Brian describes the making of 'Smile' as 'a hashish-fuelled period of craziness'. He also states that the band would lay on the studio floor with microphones suspended over their heads whilst the weird experimental music filled the room. At the end of the 60's with success eluding them at home the band looked to Europe to continue their success. Europe especially England embraced them and kept them touring and releasing albums for several years. This film includes many rare and unreleased scenes and shows the group 'at home' in London.
