This is a very special performance by one of the most popular jazz groups of the early 1980's. Taped amidst the works of Rodin Thorvaldsen and countless Roman sculptures the band plays in the atrium of this world famous sculpture museum - the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. It was a comfortable inspiring location for the musicians and the tracks were personally mixed by the band leader Mike Mainieri.STEPS AHEAD is an interesting amalgamation of unique and diversely talented musicians. Eddie Gomez is perhaps best known as a longtime member of the Bill Evans Trio where he always provided sensitive support and powerful technical mastery. Gomez also has many classical credits to his name. Michael Brecker is an awesomely capable saxophonist who is widely respected in musician circles and much in demand as a recording studio performer. He has appeared on over 1000 albums one hundred of which have gone Gold but he also is one of the leaders of the Brecker Brothers band along with his brother - the superb trumpet player Randy Brecker. The pianist then 18 years old and on her first professional tour as a musician is the Brazillian Eliane Elias. Later on she married Randy Brecker whom she recorded with often and became a leader. Peter Eskrine is best known as a longtime drummer for the immensely popular Weather Report but he too has played on countless recordings and has been a leader. The excellent vibraphonist Mike Mainieri leads this fine group contributing many compositions himself. But Mainieri obviously respects and admires his musicians and he draws the best out of their varied talents. So sit back and enjoy this extremely well recorded performance by one of the freshest jazz bands of the early 1980's.Tracks:1. The Essential Ricky Martin Collection is a repackaged version of the poor-quality Ricky Martin--European Tour, released in 2001. Using concert footage shot on a camcorder, and cheesy special effects, the European Tour release has gone down in history as one the most dreadful pop DVDs ever released. In an attempt to add more value and revitalise the main feature, a biographical audio CD and 24-page booklet have also been included here. In comparison to the material featured on the DVD, the audio CD is bearable but contains only snippets of music. Instead, excerpts from unlicensed interviews with the star are interspersed with voiceovers from an over-enthusiastic presenter, who constantly describes the singer as "phenomenal". The "24-page colour super booklet" is virtually a printed transcript of the material contained on the discs. Like the rest of the package the booklets style is weak, and contains dated library images of the star. In a desperate attempt to appeal to an English-language audience, the track-listing is in English (with Spanish translations following in brackets) even though the songs are all performed in Spanish. The Official Video Collection and One Night Only are still by far the best Ricky Martin DVD collections available. On the DVD: The Essential Ricky Martin Collection on disc is the same as the European Tour release, with the addition of CD, booklet and poster. The bonus clip of "La Bamba" is an amateur recording of Ricky performing a song on stage with a live recording of the track dubbed over the top. Due to the use of a tiny font, and a flickering typeface the biography and discography are impossible to read. The feature and bonus material are only presented in standard picture format and in stereo.--John Galilee
A Year in the Life of charts the incredible rise of British boy band Blue. Hitting the UK Top Five for the first time in May 2001, Antony, Duncan, Simon and Lee followed "All Rise" with two UK No. 1 singles ("Too Close" and "If You Come Back"). From the signing of their record deal to their first visit to Australasia, this "access all areas" release documents the guys' gruelling schedule. Keen at first to highlight the authenticity of Blue in comparison to other more manufactured boy bands, the feature instead unintentionally exposes how superficial their success is; owing just as much to PR and image management as talent. The visual material is also inconsistent throughout, with a glut of footage from the first few months but a severe lack of more recent material, ending with shots of the group starting work on their second album in early 2002. There is no mention of the band winning the "Best Newcomer" award at the Brits 2002. On the DVD: the flashy menus on the disc are attractive and easy to use, with the 70-minute documentary divided into chapters. The band's first four videos are available to view separately or as part of the whole feature. Incongruously labelled as "Blue on Tour", one section of the bonus material includes behind-the-scenes footage of the band's promotional visit to Singapore. There's also the Director's Cut of "If You Come Back", which is only slightly different from the official video. Opening with Duncan slapping his girlfriend it soon becomes obvious why this version of the video was never used. Footage of the band recording the track (labelled as the "Early Studio Version") provides an interesting insight into how songs rapidly change shape in post-production. --John Galilee
