| RRP Wonders of the Solar System ReviewThe latest example of just how much a terrific documentary series can benefit from the Blu-ray format, Wonders Of The Solar System is a fascinating six-part series that simply looks stunning in high definition. Presented by Professor Brian Cox, the series takes time to investigate the solar system around us, and the many natural beauties contained within it. Across the episodes, Cox covers the likes of planets themselves, the rings of Saturn, the question of whether were alone in the universe, and the sun itself. What lifts Wonders Of The Solar System above the many shows that have tackled the subject before, however, are two factors. Firstly, its Cox himself, an enthused and interesting host, who explains things well and really helps make accessible the material. Secondly, its the utterly stunning visuals. The BBC has mixed in CGI along with images sent directly from space to quite breathtaking effect. And this, inevitably, is where the Blu-ray kicks in. Wonders Of The Solar System simply looks wonderful in high definition, with the visuals coming across terrifically well. On DVD, this all looked very impressive. Here, its simply brilliant, and the end result is a series that can sit alongside Planet Earth as an example of just what Blu-ray can do for material of this quality and ilk. --Jon Foster

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Complete Season 4 | DVD | (18/10/2004)
from £34.20
| Saving you £0.79 (2.31%)
| RRP In its fourth season, Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to change its formula radically. Two major characters--the vampire-with-a-soul Angel and Cordelia, the queen bitch of Sunnydale High--had gone off to be in their own show, Angel, and soon after the start of the season Willow's werewolf boyfriend Oz left when Seth Green needed to concentrate on his film career. Buffy and Willow started college, where they met new characters like Riley, the All-American Boy with a double life, and Tara, the sweet stuttering witch; but Xander and Giles found themselves at something of a loose end. Several characters were subjected to the radical re-envisioning possible in a show that deals with the supernatural: the blond vampire Spike came back and soon found himself with an inhibitor chip in his head, forced into reluctant alliance with Buffy; the former vengeance demon Anya became passionately smitten with Xander. Not all fans were happy with the central story arc about the sinister Dr Walsh (Lindsay Crouse) and her Frankensteinian creation Adam, though Crouse's performance was memorable. The strength of Season Four was perhaps most in impressive stand-alone episodes like the silent "Hush", the multiple dream sequence "Restless" and the passionate, moving "New Moon Rising", in which Oz returns, apparently cured, only to find that Willow is no longer waiting for him. This was one of the high points of the show as a vehicle for intense acting, perhaps only equalled by "Who Are You?", in which the evil slayer Faith takes over Buffy's body and Sarah Michelle Gellar gets to play bad girl for once. --Roz KaveneyOn the DVD: Buffy Season 4 was a hit and so is this sublime box set. The commentaries for "The Initiative", "This Year'sGirl", "Superstar" and "Primaveral" are all well above average, but are nothing compared to "Hush" and "Restless" where Joss Whedon gives out all the information and insights any fan would dream of. The four featurettes included are a pleasure to watch, especially the evolution of the sets for the show. The scripts, trailers and cast biographies complete the set and make for a decent addition to your Buffy archive. The soundtrack is in 2.0 Dolby surround, but the image is as grainy and dark as the previous seasons on DVD. --Celine Martig

| RRP Season 1Leonard and Sheldon are brilliant physicists the kind of beautiful minds that understand how the universe works. But none of that genius helps them interact with people especially women. All this begins to change when a free-spirited beauty named Penny moves in next door. Sheldon Leonard's roommate is quite content spending his nights playing Klingon Boggle with their socially dysfunctional friends fellow Caltech scientists Wolowitz and Koothrappali. However Leonard sees in Penny a whole new universe of possibilities... including love. Season 2The science of funny is back! At work physicists Leonard and Sheldon and their geek pals conquer the cosmos. At home real life from dating to driving conquers them. This season Leonard gets a girl. So does Sheldon. (Sheldon?!) And super-smart überconfident Leslie Winkle reduces mere men to spineless jellyfish. Twenty-three laugh-filled episodes from series creators Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men) and Bill Prady (Dharma & Greg) and a talented cast with astronomical comedy I.Q.s show why Big Bang is such a big hit. Season 3Worlds collide in Season 3! A love affair with Penny has opened a big wide wonderful world of romance for Leonard. But Sheldon likes the world just the way it was thank you. All of which makes for a zany comic triangle with brainy clueless Sheldon and practical grounded Penny hilariously vying for the role of hypotenuse. This complete 3-Disc 23-Episode Season 3 Set also features Raj Howard tattoos football awkward dates jail time Stan Lee a The Lord of the Rings ring and all the fun of a series that only gets better. The Big Bang Theory has transformed from a cute comedy about eggheads and their hottie neighbor into an addictive ensemble piece that could be this decade's answer to Friends (Lynette Rice Entertainment Weekly). Season 4This season the Big Bang gang's romantic universe expands. On the rebound from Penny Leonard falls into the arms of Raj's sister Priya. Sheldon gets a girlfriend or rather a friend who is a girl: Amy a dour neurobiologist who declares herself besties with Penny. Howard and Bernadette heat up. Join physicists Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) as they ponder black holes chemical deviations girls and other mysteries of the universe in all 24 phenomenally funny episodes of Season Five. With Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard's relationship in uncharted terrain Sheldon Howard (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) discover that the feminine mystique is something that cannot be easily graphed or calculated. As they muddle through relationship bugs and romance re-launches they also discover it's nothing a good roll of the D and D dice or a paintball tournament can't solve. Season 6Whether on or above Earth hilarity is outrageously universal in TV's most popular comedy featuring four forward-thinking but socially backward geniuses. Fun discoveries multiply: Leonard learns jealousy is bad for a relationship (with Penny) but science is good for seduction (of Penny). Howard finds life in the International Space Station life is no escape from terrestrial turmoil between his mom and his new wife Bernadette. Raj meets someone special who may be a good match if he can keep her from fleeing mid-date. And then there's Sheldon. He learns what not to say after facing harassment charges or competing for tenure at work and how Dungeons and Dragons can be the icebreaker his relationship with Amy needs. For those who need laughter with scientific regularity this 24-episode Season Six set of The Big Bang Theory will rock your cosmos.
Blackadder the Third (Remastered) | DVD | (25/07/2011)
from £5.59
| Saving you £10.40 (186.05%)
| RRP Rowan Atkinson's irredeemably wicked Edmund Blackadder has moved forward in time from the court of Queen Elizabeth but a little down the social ladder. He's now butler to Hugh Laurie's congenitally stupid Prince Regent on the cusp of the 18th and 19th centuries, and if that wasn't bad enough he's still accompanied by Tony Robinson's dim-witted Baldrick, whose cunning plans never fail to make an impossible situation worse. Blackadder's desperate scheming and utter contempt for all he surveys hasn't changed, nor have the baroque complexities of the situations in which he becomes embroiled: from an anachronistic war of words with Dr Johnson (Robbie Coltrane relishing every syllable) to taking on the Scarlet Pimpernel at his own game, to fighting a duel with a psychopathic Duke of Wellington, Edmund's luck never seems to change. Richard Curtis and Ben Elton's sharp scripts have more fun with the period setting than ever before, as contemporary literary archetypes from Samuel Johnson to Jane Austen are ripe for lampooning. Howard Goodall's theme tune is updated to a glorious classical pastiche, while the extravagant costumes of the times hardly need altering to achieve the desired effect. The comedy is so good it seemed this could never be bettered, until Blackadder Goes Forth that is. --Mark Walker

| RRP Season 1 review: The US TV schedules have never been shy of legal thrillers, and at first glance, The Good Wife is the kind of show that might easily blend into the crowd. And yet is has some key assets in its corner that lift it into something altogether more interesting. The key asset to The Good Wife is Julianna Marguiles in the lead role of Alicia Florrick. Not long after we meet her, we discover that her life has been blown apart by the actions of her husband. Thus, in the middle of her life, she has to restart her career as a junior at a law firm, where she finds herself competing against the younger, fresher graduates. Its an interesting dynamic, and one thats strengthened enormously by some terrific writing and thoughtful cases. For its the storytelling thats the other main strength of The Good Wife, and thats likely to keep you gripped right the way through this maiden season. Granted, theres a feeling that it often covers ground that many shows have got to before. Yet The Good Wife puts a strong enough spin on the formula to emerge as a quality TV show in its own right. --Jon Foster
