  11 August 1999 witnessed an event of a lifetime - a total solar eclipse hitting England for the first time since June 1927. The band of darkness swept in from the Altantic crossing the Cornish coast at 11.11am and passing through Europe the Middle East and India at twice the speed of sound to end at sunset 8 700 miles away. The drama of the day when the sun came out twice and night fell before noon was experienced by more people than had seen any other total eclipse in history. In the United Kingdom zone of totality two million eclipse watchers thrilled at the suddenness with which darkness fell and the temperature dropped - their excitement undampened by heavy cloud cover. High above the gloom of Cornwall an RAF Hercules filmed the moment of totality when the sun disappeared behind the moon all of which is captured on this awe-inspiring video. Viewers can marvel at the magnificent 'diamond rings' and 'Bailey's Beads' as the light from the sun appears over the mountains and valleys of the moon as well as the beautiful corona - the amazing pearly outer atmosphere - and the plumes of gas leaping from the sun's surface. Presented by the legendary 'The Sky At Night' astronomer Patrick Moore who composed the classical music which adorns the programme the video features exhilarating footage of eclipses from around the world including England's last eclipse in 1927. Also included are on-the-spot interviews from eclipse chasers and locals at Bray Hill Cornwall and the reactions of the crowd and wildlife as darkness slowly decends. This DVD version of the programme also contains tables and figures relating to the eclipse as well as extensive extracts from Patrick Moore's compact disc Moore Music.

  Season 3: Having really hit its comedic stride, the third season did the smart thing and showed a more serious side to the Friends' frivolous nature. There was fun introducing the chick and the duck, poking ""Ugly Naked Guy" with a stick and "T.O.W. The Princess Leia Fantasy" (for which George Lucas sent a "thank you" note). Then after establishing a few cracks in their otherwise fairy-tale union, "T.O.W. Ross and Rachel Take a Break" offered admirable contrast. From here on in, the awkward catchphrase "we were on a break" became a hard-hitting reminder that love hurts. The other s' relationships were naturally no less complicated. "T.O.W. Monica and Richard are Just Friends" teased a now moustache-free Tom Selleck into thinking he might be "the one". Then Pete (Jon Favreau) tried his hand before insanely wanting to become "The Ultimate Fighting Champion". This episode pulled off an incredible double guest surprise from Billy Crystal and Robin Williams, proving just how popular the show had become. To that list were added cameos from Ben Stiller as "The Screamer", Sherilyn Fenn as one of Joey's exs and Isabella Rossellini, who taught Ross to never fantasise on laminated plastic. The cast were fitting in film roles where possible. Cox appeared in Scream, then brought David Arquette back with her for a cameo, which kept their off-screen chemistry alive. The final surprise was Teri Garr as Phoebe, Sr in "T.O. At the Beach", where it was hinted that something might be salvaged between Ross and Rachel after all. --Paul Tonks
