A Fistful Of Dollars: - Languages: English (Dolby Digital Mono) ; Subtitles: English Clint Eastwood's stunning Spaghetti Western debut. When the Man With No Name rides into town the rival gangs of the Baxters and the Rojos soon find themselves fighting each other. As the lean cold-eyed cobra-quick gunfighter Clint became the first of the Western's anti-herores. The cynical enigmatic loner with a clouded past is the same character Eastwood fans have been savouring ever since. 'A Fistful Of Dollars' is the western taken to the extreme - with unremitting violence gritty realism and tongue-in-cheek humour. Leone's direction is taut and stylish and the visuals are striking - from the breathtaking panoramas (in Spain) to the extreme close-ups of quivering lips and darting eyes before the shoot-out begins. And all are accentuated by renowned composer Ennio Morricone's quirky haunting score. For A Few Dollars More - Languages: English and French (Dolby Digital Mono) ; Subtitles: English Dutch French Clint Eastwood had proven so successful in his first foray into European Westerns with 'A Fistful Of Dollars' that a follow up sequel was inevitable. Superbly scripted by Luciano Vincenzoni featuring an unforgettable alliance between ruthless gun-slingers to track down the notorious bandit El Indio played by Gian Maria Volonte. The film is also noted for its array of weaponry a veritable arsenal of rifles that became so startingly influential in future westerns. Sergio Leone's direction is both violent and operatic and Ennio Morricone's atmospheric score keeps the tension taut as the action moves from jail breaks and hold ups to spectacular gun battles. The Good The Bad And The Ugly - Languages: English (Dolby Digital Mono) ; Subtitles: English Dutch By far the most ambitious unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever attempted 'The Good the Bad and the Ugly' is an engrossing actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Clint Eastwood returns for a final appearance as the invincible Man With No Name this time teaming with two gunslingers (Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef) to pursue a cache of 0 000 - and letting no one not even warring factions in a civil war stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold hard closeups exceptional camera work captures the beauty and cruelty of the barren landscape and the hardened characters who stride unwaveringly through it. Forging a vibrant and yet detached style of action that had not been seen before and has never been matched since 'The Good the Bad and the Ugly' shatters the western in true Clint Eastwood style. The complex plot of bloodshed and betrayal winds its way through the American Civil War filmed to resemble the French battlefields of WW1 to end in a climactic Dance of Death. Arguably the quintessential Italian Western this 1966 film boasts a fine Ennio Morricone score featuring a main theme that reached No.1 in the world's pop charts.

Eureka Entertainment to release TWO TAOIST TALES (TAOISM DRUNKARD and THE YOUNG TAOISM FIGHTER), a couple of crazy kung-fu extravaganzas from the first family of Hong Kong martial arts, the Yuen Clan. Presented in their worldwide debuts on Blu-ray from a brand new 2K restorations. Available from 23 September 2024 as part of the Eureka Classics range, the first print run of 2000 copies only will exclusively feature a limited edition O-card slipcase, and a collector's booklet. In the wake of Encounter of the Spooky Kind, the Hong Kong film industry launched headlong into a prolific genre cycle that drew upon Taoist folklore. Popular throughout the 1980s and into the next decade, these films combined elements of horror, fantasy, comedy, and martial arts as they pit their protagonists against hopping vampires, vengeful ghosts, and evil sorcerers. Here, Eureka Classics is proud to present two of the most mind-bending tales of Taoist magic ever committed to film: Taoism Drunkard and The Young Taoism Fighter! Directed by and starring Yuen Cheung-yan (The Miracle Fighters), Taoism Drunkard follows a man with a love for wine who accidentally damages a sacred statue. To atone for this blunder, he is asked by an enraged Taoist priest (Hsiao Hou-tao) to find a virginal boy (Yuen Yat-chor) to aid in defending his temple from a demonic sorcerer (Yuen Shun-yi). Then, in The Young Taoism Fighter (directed by Police Story's Chen Chi-hwa), a practitioner of Taoist kung fu (Yuen Yat-chor) manages to separate his soul from his body before teaming up with a vengeful young woman (Hilda Liu Hao-yi) to take on a sinister sorcerer (Kwan Chung) and the evil leader of a rival kung fu school (Yen Shi-kwan). Filled with imagery both fantastical and thrilling - not least Taoism Drunkard's banana monster - and featuring some of the most jaw-droppingly inventive fight sequences in the history of martial arts cinema, Taoism Drunkard and The Young Taoism Fighter are cult classics from the celebrated Yuen Clan that need to be seen to be believed. In 1961, director Mario Bava (Rabid Dogs, Kill Baby Kill) turned his hand to the historical adventure genre, capitalising on the recent success of 1958's Kirk Douglas vehicle The Vikings. The result was a colourful, swashbuckling epic of treachery, heroism and forbidden love: Erik the Conqueror. In 786 AD, the invading Viking forces are repelled from the shores of England, leaving behind a young boy Erik, son of the slain Viking king. Years later, Erik (George Ardisson, Juliet of the Spirits), raised by the English queen as her own, becomes Duke of Helford, while across the sea, his brother Eron (Cameron Mitchell, Blood and Black Lace) assumes leadership of the Viking horde and sets his sights on conquering England once again, setting the two estranged brothers on a collision course that will determine the fates of their respective kingdoms Featuring a bombastic score by frequent collaborator Roberto Nicolosi (Black Sunday) and memorably co-starring the stunning Kessler twins (Sodom and Gomorrah), Erik the Conqueror showcases Bava's immense talent for creating awe-inspiring spectacle with limited resources. • Tekkonkinkreet [Blu-ray]Tekkonkinkreet | Blu Ray | (07/01/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Tekkonkinkreet is a landmark in the increasing cross-pollination between Japanese and American animation: Based on a manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, the film was made in Japan at Studio 4C, but directed by American Michael Arrias. The story unfolds in Treasure Town, a scabrous metropolitan slum so gritty it makes the viewer want to clean under his fingernails. Orphans White and Black share an existence at the fringes of an already marginalized subculture. White seems naive, if not learning disabled: at 11, he can't tie his shoes or dress himself. But he has an uncanny sixth sense about what's happening in Treasure Town. Older, streetwise Black looks after White and receives the emotional support he needs in return: they're two halves of a damaged whole. The arrival of a murderous yakuza boss who wants to demolish Treasure Town and build an amusement park draws Black and White into an escalating spiral of physical and emotional violence. Although the ending of Tekkonkinkreet feels needlessly obscure, it's a striking and often powerful film from a first-time director. (Contains violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon, Amazon.com
