  The Concert for New York City took place at New York's Madison Square Gardens six weeks after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As presented here, with about five hours of musical performances and celebrity cameos, it was a frequently awkward affair: the traditional fatuous jollity of American show business ceremonies is not, perhaps, the ideal medium for articulating the feelings engendered by the kind of tragedy America had just suffered. It is often evident--and actually quite endearingly so--that the film and television stars who appear here feel somewhat foolish accepting applause while standing alongside the members of New York's Police and Fire departments who take the stage to offer brief tributes to fallen comrades (it would be nice, but naïve, to believe that September 11 caused our celebrity-obsessed culture to redraft its parameters of heroism). The performances captured here are mostly pretty good, though David Bowie's opening, with an eerie and affecting take on Paul Simon's "America", followed by a rumbustious "Heroes", sets a standard not subsequently matched. The short films by New York directors are also worth seeing, especially Kevin Smith's daringly funny New Jersey perspective (the concert's only other overt attempts at humour misfire woefully--especially the toe-curling George W Bush impersonator). However, the concert is principally of interest as a document of a moment in history, rather than as a musical artefact. All of what America felt, for better and for worse, in the immediate wake of September 11, is on view here: sorrow, defiance, pride and, as Richard Gere famously discovered when he suggested that perhaps there were more constructive responses than carpet-bombing Third World basket-cases, anger. On the DVD: The Concert for New York Cityhas a viewing option which screens out everything except the musical performances. Sound is available in Dolby 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo. --Andrew Mueller

  In the original Predator, Rambo meets Alien in a terrific science fiction thriller directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of US Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a load of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realise that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The sequel, Predator 2, suffers from the lack of both original star Schwarzenegger and director McTiernan. Danny Glover does serviceable work as the hard-bitten city cop tracking the near-invisible Predator, who this time has chosen to do a bit of hunting on the streets of LA instead of the jungle.   A firefight occurs at the 'Bridge Of No Return' in the Korean DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) where two North Korean soldiers are killed. The only events that both sides confirm are that after a shoot-out and a wounded soldier stumbled out of a guard post in the pouring rain three North Korean soldiers have been struck down; two are dead the other wounded. However Major Jean discovers that the number of bullets fired from the pistols and the number found at the scene differ and she begins to dig deeper into the backgrounds of the soldiers involved. Subsequently she finds out about a previous encounter involving the same two North Korean soldiers (Song Kang-ho Shin Ha-kyun) and their South Korean opponent Lee. With secrets from Major Jean's own past coming to the fore the story begins to unravel...   Compared to the spectacular shows other performers put on these days, the concert featured on Homecoming--A-Ha Live at Vallhall is a very simple affair. There's no fancy lighting or special effects, with the plain stage set looking like a remnant from the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest. In fact with the guys' looks and music having changed little after nearly two decades in the business, the concert has a distinct feel of 1985 about it. That said, the track-listing contains an equal sprinkling of greatest hits, and songs from the more recent Minor Earth Major Sky. The newer tracks sit particularly well alongside the classics, and you can detect the trio's joy of being able to perform the newer songs such as "Little Black Heart" and "Summer Moved On" live. The home audience, many who grew up listening to A-Ha, clearly adore the guys just as much they did when they were teens. Sadly judging by the shots of the audience, the fans (predominantly 30-something women) haven't aged as well as Harket and co. On the DVD: Homecoming on disc has a great audio soundtrack (Dolby Digital 5.1), but the concert visuals are grainy and poor. This is more than compensated for by the vast amount of bonus material included. As well as three short documentaries on how Pal, Magne and Morten spent their seven-year break from A-Ha, there's a 20-minute interview with the band and behind-the-scenes footage of the after show party presented by a rather annoying Ian Wright. As well additional live performances of "Early Morning" and "Summer Moved On" recorded at a benefit concert, the videos for the four singles from Minor Earth Major Sky are included. The comprehensive English subtitles are particularly handy for understanding the Norwegian dialogue during the concert. --John Galilee
