  • X-Men 1/X-Men 2: 2 disc doublepack [2003]X-Men 1/X-Men 2: 2 disc doublepack | DVD | (10/11/2003) from £9.43   |  Saving you £15.56 (165.01%)   |  RRP £24.99

X-Men 2 picks up almost directly where X-Men left off: misguided super-villain Magneto (Ian McKellen) is still a prisoner of the US government, heroic bad-boy Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is up in Canada investigating his mysterious origin, and the events at Liberty Island (which occurred at the conclusion of X-Men) have prompted a rethink in official policy towards mutants--the proposed Mutant Registration Act has been shelved by US Congress. Into this scenario pops wealthy former army commander William Stryker, a man with the President's ear and a personal vendetta against all mutant-kind in general, and the X-Men's leader Professor X (Patrick Stewart) in particular. Once he sets his plans in motion, the X-Men must team-up with their former enemies Magneto and Mystique (Rebecca Romjin-Stamos), as well as some new allies (including Alan Cumming's gregarious, blue-skinned German mutant, Nightcrawler). The phenomenal global success of X-Men meant that director Bryan Singer had even more money to spend on its sequel, and it shows. Not only is the script better (there's significantly less cheesy dialogue than the original), but the action and effects are also even more stupendous--from Nightcrawler's teleportation sequence through the White House to a thrilling aerial dogfight featuring mutants-vs-missiles to a military assault on the X-Men's school/headquarters to the final showdown at Stryker's sub-Arctic headquarters. Yet at no point do the effects overtake the film or the characters. Moreso than the original, this is an ensemble piece, allowing each character in its even-bigger cast at least one moment in the spotlight (in fact, the cast credits don't even run until the end of the film). And that, perhaps, is part of its problem (though it's a slight one): with so much going on, and nary a recap of what's come before, it's a film that could prove baffling to anyone who missed the first instalment. But that's just a minor quibble--X-Men 2 is that rare thing, a sequel that's actually superior to its predecessor. --Robert Burrow

Pride And Prejudice: A romance ahead of its time... The five Bennet sisters - Elizabeth or Lizzie (Keira Knightley) Jane (Rosamund Pike) Lydia (Jena Malone) Mary (Talulah Riley) and Kitty (Carey Mulligan) - have been raised well aware of their mother's (Brenda Blethyn) fixation on finding them husbands and securing set futures. The spirited and intelligent Elizabeth however strives to live her life with a broader perspective as encouraged by her doting father (Donald Sutherland). When wealthy bachelor Mr. Bingley takes up residence in a nearby mansion the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of London friends and the influx of young military officers surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. Eldest daughter Jane serene and beautiful seems poised to win Mr. Bingley's heart. For her part Lizzie meets with the handsome and it would seem snobbish Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) and the battle of the sexes is joined. Their encounters are frequent and spirited yet far from encouraging. Lizzie finds herself even less inclined to accept a marriage proposal from a distant cousin Mr. Collins (Tom Hollander) and supported by her father stuns her mother and Mr. Collins by declining. When the previously good-natured Mr. Bingley abruptly departs for London leaving a devastated Jane Lizzie holds Mr. Darcy culpable for contributing to the heartbreak. But a crisis involving youngest sister Lydia soon opens Lizzie's eyes to the true nature of her relationship with Mr. Darcy... (Dir. Joe Wright 2005) Sense And Sensibility: Sense and Sensibility is the story of two sisters: pragmatic Elinor (Emma Thompson) and passionately wilful Marianne (Kate Winslet). This two-hour DVD from director Tony Palmer celebrates the extraordinary life of Bobby Moore. Described by veteran sports journalist the late Ian Wooldridge as the best sports documentary I have ever seen the film stars all the 1966 World Cup heroes plus contributions from Michael Caine Pele Harry Redknapp David Beckham George Best Jimmy Greaves and members of Moore's family. Bobby Moore remains an iconic figure and inspiration for generations of football players and fans - a rags-to-riches fairy tale and a special moment in English history. He was the first (and so far only) English captain to hold the World Cup in his hands. Bobby Moore's journey from the poverty-stricken East End to becoming the most famous man in England came to symbolise the triumph of a country and of an entire generation. This film tells the true story of the man and the footballer. All his football contemporaries in the England team of 1966 were interviewed - among them Bobby and Jack Charlton Geoff Hurst Martin Peters Alan Ball and George Cohen - as well as iconic figures such as David Beckham George Best Harry Redknapp Jimmy Greaves Terry Venables Franz Beckenbauer Pel'' Michael Caine Denis Law Jimmy Tarbuck Alan Shearer and Malcolm Allison; and most importantly Bobby Moore's Aunt Ina daughter Roberta and son Dean as well as both his wives Tina & Stephanie. Their eye-witness accounts together with a special contribution from Alf Garnett (Warren Mitchell) football footage of England's campaigns in 1966 and 1970 and archive film of Bobby Moore's parents and of Alf Ramsey throughout that period make this film a unique family record of an extraordinary man.
