Woody Allen's latest comedy follows the misadventures of a couple who plan a daring robbery in New York.
An exciting British comedy featuring the three leads from 'Smack The Pony': Fiona Allen Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips. The year is 55 B.C. The Romans are cutting a bloody swathe through the European continent. Any nation daring to defy them is swiftly and brutally crushed into servitude. Mighty Gaul has just fallen and Rome has set its sights upon a small cold and rather damp island across the narrow waters of the Channel. Now with the Romans invading it is up to three sist
Al Pacino is no stranger to the role of tough determined cops as fans of Heat Serpico and Sea Of Love will attest. But in Cruising he plunges into an even stormier sea as a New York policeman who infiltrates the lurid S&M subculture to trap a serial killer preying on gay men. William Friedkin (The Exorcist The French Connection) directs (from his own screenplay adaptation of Gerald Walker's novel) this still controversial still engrossing murder mystery that immerses audiences in a dangerous yet fascinating world. And Pacino's performance as a man whose identity and relationships are hauntingly affected by his assignment remains its magnetic centerpiece.
Gillies MacKinnon's highly praised adaptation of Pat Barker's novel is a moving and powerful study of war and its devastating effects. Set in a military hospital during World War I the film tells of a real life encounter between army psychologist Dr William Rivers and the poet Siegfried Sassoon who has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. It also concerns young poet Wilfred Owen who whith support from Sassoon begins to write his great war poems. Rivers whose duty it is to return shell-shocked officers to the trenches is tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine especially the treatment of working-class officer Billy Prior who has been struck dumb by the carnage he has witnessed.
Terrifyingly dark and based (very loosely) on factual events, this controversial, brilliantly atmospheric, occasionally darkly funny film tells of the tragedy that befalls a group fo five teenagers one summer afternoon.
Broadway Danny Rose is vintage Woody Allen. Danny (Allen) is a down-at-heel theatrical agent whose regular clients include talking bird acts and a man who twists balloons into animal shapes. His faith in these eccentrics never fails, despite the fact that everyone leaves him for another agent in the end. Complications ensue when one of his clients, an overweight crooner, starts a romance with a mafia widow (excellently played by Allen's partner of the time, Mia Farrow). The mob think Danny is her boyfriend, forcing the two of them to take evasive action, at one point dodging bullets among giant floats for a forthcoming Fourth of July parade. The script is witty, the acting superb, the situations inventive. The film is shot in black and white and looks superb for it. On the DVD: The DVD is widescreen, with extremely clear sound so you won't miss a single wisecrack. Dialogue is available in French, German, Italian and Spanish as well as English. It's a pity, however--since the film is so short (84 minutes)--that there are no extras apart from the theatrical trailer. --Ed Buscombe
Both a kind of home movie and a salute to the hip, pop-up sketch comedy of 1960s/early 1970s television--Laugh-In, Monty Python's Flying Circus, that sort of thing--Schizopolis is a hit-and-miss series of gags with vaguely connecting threads of Kafkaesque paranoia. Soderbergh himself stars as two people--one an ineffective dentist and the other a speechwriter for a cult movement called Eventualism, which has set out to "question all answers"--connected by their romances with the same woman, played by Soderbergh's real-life ex, Betsy Bramley. There isn't so much a story as a series of bits in which these characters often (though not necessarily) turn up, from press conferences on the subject of horse urination to old footage of nudists to a scene of an Eventualist exchange between husband and wife: "Generic greeting!" "Generic greeting returned!" None of this leads to a literal point but after a while an undercurrent of disease about making sense of the modern world becomes apparent beneath the jokes. Soderbergh (sex, lies, and videotape, Out of Sight) is certainly a filmmaker who goes his own way in life, always hitting his target in one spot or another and occasionally getting a bull's-eye for his trouble. Schizopolis is no bull's-eye and it has just as many detractors as admirers but it's impossible not to appreciate Soderbergh's conviction that making a film out on the fringes is a worthy endeavour. --Tom Keogh
