  • The House in the Woods [DVD]The House in the Woods | DVD | (21/04/2014) from £11.98   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

An off-beat minimalist thriller from idiosyncratic director Maxwell Munden The House in the Woods stars B-movie stalwarts Patricia Roc and Michael Gough as a trendy couple who get in over their head in their quest for a little peace and quiet. Though The House in the Woods is presented here in a brand-new transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio there are still some issues with the soundtrack. While they have been corrected as much as possible viewers will notice intermittent audio issues. Geoffrey Carter a highly strung author suffering from writer's block petulantly insists to his wife that they flee their annoying neighbours and move somewhere more peaceful. They find a delightfully remote woodland cottage which the owner a melancholic widowed artist with a Larry Adler fixation is happy to rent them at a pittance. All too soon they realise that something is not quite right with their landlord and much to Geoffrey's horror he realises that the plot of his new murder mystery is being played out for real...

  • Frivolous Lola [DVD]Frivolous Lola | DVD | (05/06/2017) from £11.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

One of the sunniest of Tinto Brass's erotic comedies, this sets its breezy tone from the opening scene in which Lola (Anna Ammirati) cycles around a small Po Valley town in a flapping skirt that leaves nothing to the imagination. But it's the 1950s, and her baker fiancée Masetto (Max Parodi) is determined that Lola remains a virgin until their wedding night. However, she is equally set on establishing whether or not he's a good lover before they tie the knot. His dough-kneading technique seems promising, but how can she be sure without an expert to compare him with? In short, can Masetto live up to the erotic ideals professed by Lola's mother's lover (Patrick Mower)? Fortunately, the outwardly innocent town turns out to be a hotbed of licentiousness, with opportunities for voyeurism and maybe more around every corner - all in the interests of self-improving research, of course.

  • Andrea Bocelli - A Night In Tuscany [1997]Andrea Bocelli - A Night In Tuscany | DVD | (15/11/2004) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-5.01 (-33.40%)   |  RRP £14.99

Part concert, part documentary, part travelogue, this video hit duplicates the success of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's albums and underscores his unique crossover appeal. Critical response to Bocelli has been confined to fusillades of scorn from classical and opera writers, but the bullet-proof superstar is better understood in the context of a mainland European tradition of pop-classical fusion. Bocelli cheerfully ignores the supposed wall between high (classical) art and low (pop) kitsch with his mix of operatic chestnuts, soft pop and traditional Italian songs.Indeed, despite interview segments in which he proclaims his love of opera or proudly recalls an apprenticeship to operatic veteran Franco Corelli, Bocelli comes across as more fan than virtuoso. But if his voice can prompt technical cavils from hard-core opera buffs, the blind singer's emotional directness and relative lack of onstage preening explain much of his populist appeal. Featured songs include warhorse arias, leading off with the "Louie, Louie" of tenor showpieces, Turandot's "Nessun Dorma" and duets with gruff Italian pop-rocker Zucchero and sopranos Nuccia Focile and Sarah Brightman (who buddies up for the tear-jerking closer, "Time to Say Goodbye"). Even with the marquee bonus of those guests, however, A Night in Tuscany gets its biggest boost from the seductive Italian countryside, prominently featured in between-song segments, and in the romantic concert setting, Pisa's Piazza dei Cavalieri. --Sam Sutherland

Margaret Thatcher is one of the world's most well-known public figures. But how much do we really know about her as a person? In this witty humorous and imaginative drama Britain's first female Prime Minister is portrayed as you've never imagined her. An attractive 25-year-old woman up against that most conservative and male of all institutions - the British Conservative Party. Beginning on the night she met her husband-to-be Denis the film tells of the young Margaret Thatcher's steely determination to get selected to a 'winnable' Tory seat in the Fifties and imagines what might have gone on behind the scenes during her ten-year struggle as she was rejected by a succession of five home counties Tory selection committees and finally - against considerable local opposition - selected for the seat she was to be identified with for the rest of her political career - Finchley!
