Hooper (Anthony Hopkins) is a man seething with anger. His wife( Harriet Walter) has divorced him. He is permitted one day a week with his child. Fifteen years ago he was an outspoken advocate of women's liberation and now he feels he is a victim of the women's movement - a man without rights. At a party one night he meets a man whose ex-wife has just announced her plans to leave for Australia with their child and with her lesbian lover. Hooper is galvanized. He persuades the man to sue for custody supplies legal costs out of his own pocket and becomes obsessed with his belief that the women's movement has created a wave of discrimination against men. A very rare film that asks hard and fundamental questions about the role of men: such as is it ever too late for a man to learn that he can never love himself until he first learns to love somebody else?

  • Sense And Sensibility / Remains Of The Day / Little Women [1996]Sense And Sensibility / Remains Of The Day / Little Women | DVD | (17/05/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The Remains of the Day is one of Merchant-Ivory's most thought-provoking films. Anthony Hopkins is a model of restraint and propriety as Stevens, the butler who "knows his place"; Emma Thompson is the animated and sympathetic Miss Kenton, the housekeeper whose attraction to Stevens is doomed to disappointment. As Nazi appeaser Lord Darlington, James Fox clings to the notion of a gentleman's agreement in the ruthless political climate before World War Two. Hugh Grant is his journalist nephew all too aware of reality, while Christopher Reeves gives a spirited portrayal of an American senator, whose purchase of Darlington Hall 20 years on sends Stevens on a journey to right the mistake he made out of loyalty. As a period drama with an ever-relevant message, this 1993 film is absorbing viewing all the way. On the DVD: the letterbox widescreen format reproduces the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with absolute clarity. Subtitles are in French and German, with audio subtitles also in English, Italian and Spanish, and with 28 separate chapter selections. The "making-of" featurette and retrospective documentary complement each other with their "during and after" perspectives, while "Blind Loyalty, Hollow Honour" is an interesting short on the question of appeasement and war. The running commentary from Thompson, Merchant and Ivory is more of a once-only diversion. --Richard Whitehouse

Papillon (Dir. Franklin J. Schaffner 1973): They called him Papillon meaning butterfly. If only he had wings to go with the name. Unable to fly Henri Charriere virtually willed himself free. He persisted until he did the impossible: escape Devil's Island. Based on Charriere's bestseller and shot in Spain and Jamaica Franklin J. Schaffner's film of Papillon united two stars at key career junctions. After a decade of fine work in The Great Escape The Sand Pebbles and Bullitt Steve McQueen found in Charriere another ideal tough-guy role. Coming off The Graduate Midnight Cowboy and Little Big Man Dustin Hoffman again distinguished himself as Dega Charriere's scruffy friend. Midnight Express (Dir. Alan Parker 1973): Brad Davis and John Hurt star in this riveting true story of a young American's nightmarish experiences in a Turkish prison and his unforgettable journey to freedom. Busted for attempting to smuggle hashish out of Istanbul American College student Billy Hayes (Davis) is thrown into the city's most brutal jail. After suffering through four years of sadistic torture and inhuman conditions Billy is about to be released when his parole is denied. Only his inner courage and the support of a fellow inmate (Hurt) give him the strength to catch the Midnight Express (prison code for escape). Missing (Dir. Costa Gavras 1982): Director Constantin Costa-Gavras made his English-language film debut with this political thriller based on a true story. Although the nation depicted is never named directly the action clearly takes place in Chile after the military coup. Missing centers around the disappearance of Charles Horman (John Shea) an American expatriate who lives with his wife Beth (Sissy Spacek) in South America. One night armed soldiers enter their home and drag him away. In desperation Beth decides to contact Charles's father Ed (Jack Lemon) and ask for help. But as he gets the runaround from both American and Chilean officials Ed receives a cold hard lesson in political reality... and learns some ugly truths about US involvement in Latin America.

The Silence Of The Lambs (Dir. Jonathan Demme 1991): As Hannibal ""The Cannibal"" Lecter Anthony Hopkins is the archetypical antihero--cultured quick-witted uncontainable--a portrait of the sharpest human faculties gone diabolically wrong. His performance marked him as a major star in America and the movie swept the 1991 Academy Awards--Best Picture Director (Jonathan Demme) Actor (Hopkins) Actress (Foster) and Screenplay Adaptation (Ted Tally from the novel by Thomas Harris). Summer Of Sam (Dir. Spike Lee 1999): In the summer of 1977 Saturday night fever ruled and the first thrashings of punk were being heard. By day temperatures soared on the sweltering streets of Manhattan but by night a serial killer dubbed the Son of Sam stalked the suburbs indiscriminately shooting young brunettes and held New York City in a grip of terror. Trying to make sense of their lives in this overwhelming atmosphere of fear and suspicion are Vinny a streetwise Casanova indulging in affairs under the nose of his loving wife Dionna and Ritchie a punk musician moonlighting as a male stripper. As the murder's actions impact on all their lifestyles they start to suspect the killer might be someone from their own neighborhood - or even one of their own friends. From the controversial director Spike Lee comes his boldest and most ambitious film brilliantly capturing the sights sounds and sexual attitudes of the 1970s.
