| RRP Tales of medical life and strife in a Scottish village. 12 million people tuned in for the original broadcasts of the BBC's Doctor Finlay's Casebook, and now viewers can rediscover the magic with series three and four on DVD for the very first time! Bill Simpson stars as the idealist Doctor Finlay, determined to bring a sleepy 1920s Scottish village into the 20th century. Andrew Cruickshank is the crusty senior Doctor Cameron and Barbara Mullen is the stiff-lipped, unflappable Janet MacPherson, housekeeper at Arden House medical practice. Doctor Finlay's Casebook was one of the most popular programmes of the 1960s excellent casting BFI The team come up against a suspicious car crash, an outbreak of the measles, a soldier in need of an amputation, a local dog infested with rabies and Doctor Finlay tries his hand at hypnosis. First broadcast in 1962 the drama had become a cult sensation by 1965. The show's success was down to excellent casting and compelling storylines that will have you coming back time and time again
Jackie Chan's First Strike | DVD | (01/10/1999)
from £7.76
| Saving you £9.49 (146.00%)
| RRP Action-god Jackie Chan does his best James Bond impression with First Strike, an ecstatic sequel to the classic Supercop. The bare-bones plot has Chan in pursuit of international terrorists, but the narrative quickly gives way to an unceasing barrage of insane stunt work (including a nitro-fuelled ski chase and a grandiose fight scene set inside a functioning shark tank). As with most of the ageing star's recent films, there is more of an emphasis placed on big, impersonal (albeit impressive) stunts rather than the close-up combat that made him famous; but the end result is still a must-see rush for longtime fans and a great introduction for newcomers eager to see what all the well-deserved fuss is about. The scene where Jackie takes on multiple goons while armed only with a ladder is one of his most jaw-dropping set pieces ever--and that's saying quite a lot. Be sure to stick around for the closing credits of gags gone awry, which graphically prove that Chan is truly the hardest working man in show business. --Andrew Wright
True Crime | DVD | (28/01/2002)
from £8.18
| Saving you £1.81 (22.13%)
| RRP Once in a while, studio heads actually make sensible decisions. Kudos to whoever at Trimark screened the embarrassing True Crime, an overwrought, under thought, "mystery" and decided, "You know, we really don't need to let the American public see this," and immediately sent it straight to video. Probably the one most pleased by the decision was Alicia Silverstone, who didn't need this type of thing getting a theatrical distribution and hurting her blossoming career. As for Kevin Dillon? Well, he was probably happy just to get paid. Silverstone plays the teen Nancy-Drew-meets-Encyclopedia-Brown protagonist who teams up with fresh-faced police cadet Dillon to try to bag a serial killer who's been butchering teenage girls at travelling carnivals in various cities. Writer-director Pat Verducci packs his thriller with implausible detective work and numerous plot twists, all visible 20 minutes away. The "shock" ending can pretty much be worked out within the first act, leaving viewers another hour to watch Verducci concoct several amateur dream sequences, and explore a disgusting sexual relationship between Silverstone and Dillon. By the end, the question isn't so much "Whodunit?" as "Who cares?" --Dave McCoy, Amazon.com
