Fletch | DVD | (16/02/2004)
from £5.03

| RRP Fletch is a fairly sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle scripted by Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, The Freshman, Honeymoon in Vegas) from Gregory McDonald's lightweight mystery novel about an undercover newspaper reporter cracking a police drug ring. Enjoyment of the film pivots on whether you find Chase's flippant, smart-ass brand of verbal humour funny, or merely egocentric. If you don't like Chase, there's really no one else worth watching (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play IM "Fletch" Fletcher, a disillusioned investigative reporter whose cynicism and detached view on life mirrors the actor's understated approach to comedy. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to adopt numerous personas, as his job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of film's humour centres on the ridiculous idea that any of these phoney accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone. These not-so-clever disguises are put to use when Fletch becomes involved in the film's smart but continually self-mocking two-part mystery. As well as trying to gather drug-smuggling evidence against the LAPD for a long-overdue newspaper story, a rich and apparently terminally ill stranger also offers Fletch a large payoff to kill him. While the film does a fairly good job juggling both of these plots, not to mention tossing in a love interest as well, they're subservient, for better or worse, to Chase's memorable one-liners and disguises. Followed by two forgettable sequels that lack both the original's wit and Chase's attention span.--Dave McCoy, Amazon.com

from £9.94
| Saving you £4.05 (40.74%)
| RRP In View is meant as a companion piece to REM's best-of album, In Time, but it works well as a collection in its own right. A video history of some of the Athens, Georgia band's biggest songs, its focus is firmly on the latter part their long career, with videos from Automatic for the People ("Everybody Hurts", "Man on the Moon", "Nightswimming", "Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite"), Out of Time ("Losing My Religion"), Monster ("What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"), New Adventures in Hi-Fi ("E Bow the Letter", "Electrolite"), Up ("Daysleeper", "At My Most Beautiful"), and Reveal ("Imitation of Life", "All the Way to Reno"). There are just two videos from their pre-breakthrough album Green ("Orange Crush" and "Stand"), though admittedly they shied away from making videos early in their career. Still, nobody can fault the presentation of In View. Of course, the promos are spectacular, if occasionally too self-consciously artsy, but there's even more here. There are three live videos, recorded in Trafalgar Square, and six additional, rarely seen videos ("Tongue", "How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us", "New Test Leper", "Bittersweet Me", "Lotus", "I'll Take the Rain"). Best of all, though, is the ability to watch them with or without brief, introductory interviews with the band, which give a window into REM's ongoing appeal: as talented as they are, they're still refreshingly human pop stars. --Robert Burrow

NYPD Blue - Season 2 | DVD | (06/10/2003)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Originally broadcast in 1994, the second series of NYPD Blue was disrupted by the departure of star David Caruso (Detective John Kelly) after just four episodes--apparently under less than amicable circumstances. He was ably replaced as Detective Sipowicz's partner by Jimmy Smits as the smoother Detective Bobby Simone, and the series managed not to miss a beat. More streamlined and downbeat than its predecessor Hill Street Blues (also created by Steven Bochco), NYPD Blue continued second time around to mix near-the-knuckle detective work in pursuit of New York's scummiest with more character and relationship-based drama. Although it's regrettable that its ethnic-minority characters such as Lieutenant Fancy are increasingly marginalised here, the series is more comfortable, and even has fun with, regular characters such as the nervy Detective Medavoy and his on-off paramour Donna Abandando. Andy Sipowicz's simmering, tough-nosed recovering alcoholic is increasingly and amusingly put to the test in a number of situations, including a murder investigation in a gay bar; being sung to at his own wedding by Nic Turturro's Detective Martinez; and a love scene in the shower in which we experience the dubious pleasure of seeing his bare bum. New female introductions, such as the strong but sympathetic Detective Lesniak, also helped to shake up the series with a much-needed oestrogen boost. There's also fun to be had in spotting a number of guest appearances by up-and-coming actors destined to make it in their own right such as Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Debra Messing (Will and Grace). On the DVD: NYPD Blue, Series 2 DVD box set contains a number of extras, primarily a one-hour documentary in which the cast and programme-makers discuss the series episode by episode, the self-congratulatory mood only broken by some subtle digs at departing star David Caruso (apparently, he walked straight off the set following his final take into a waiting limo without any farewells). There's also a small piece paying tribute to the music of theme-writer Mike Post and an item covering the relationship between Sipowicz and Assistant DA Sylvia Costas, in whose marriage this series culminates. --David Stubbs
