  • Buck Rogers In The 25th Century - Series 1 [1980]Buck Rogers In The 25th Century - Series 1 | DVD | (22/11/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £10.16

With its campy combination of lightweight adventure and Spandex disco chic, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is a nostalgic throwback to post-Star Wars opportunism. Series co-creator Glen A. Larson was incapable of originality, and former soap star Gil Gerard (in the title role) was a bland incarnation of the comic-strip hero, so the much-anticipated series premiered on September 20, 1979, with serious disadvantages. Although the two-hour pilot "Awakening" had tested successfully as a theatrical release, Gerard and the show's producers could never agree on a stable tone for the series, which presents Capt. William "Buck" Rogers as a jovial space cowboy who is accidentally time-warped from 1987 to 2491. Earth is engaged in interplanetary war following a global holocaust, and Buck's piloting skills make him an ideal starfighter recruit for the Earth Defense Directorate, where his closest colleagues are Dr. Huer (Tim O'Connor), squadron leader Col. Wilma Deering (former model Erin Gray, looking oh-so-foxy), the wisecracking robot Twiki (voiced by cartoon legend Mel Blanc), and a portable computer-brain named Dr. Theopolis, who's carried by Twiki like oversized bling-bling. The series struggled through an awkward first season, with routine plots elevated by decent special effects and noteworthy guest stars including Jamie Lee Curtis, ill-fated Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten (appearing, with her voice dubbed over, less than a year before her tragic murder), Batman alumnus Julie Newmar, Buster Crabbe (veteran of vintage Buck Rogers movie serials), and several others in a show that favored vamps and vixens over credible science fiction. A full-scale overhaul resulted in a disastrous second season, but devoted fans still gravitate to Hawk (Thom Christopher), the charismatic alien "birdman" who was introduced with new characters and a new, space-faring search for lost tribes from Earth (with echoes of Larson's own Battlestar Galactica). Behind-the-scenes squabbles continued, and by mid-season of 1981, NBC pulled the plug on a breezy, still-engaging series that suffered from uneasy chemistry and never realized its full potential. Existing somewhere between Galactica and Lost in Space in the TV sci-fi food chain, this Buck--with a dearth of DVD extras--now functions as a cheesy stroll down memory lane. --Jeff Shannon

Top-class antics from the beautiful sextet of chums punctuate this excellent series, which climaxes with the wedding in London. The DVD version contains extra footage from the London locations and in-depth interviews with the makers of the series. Other core shenanigans of the series include Rachel's abortive attempts to seduce Josh, Phoebe's surrogate pregnancy, the Chandler-Joey-Kathy love triangle and Monica and Rachel's attempts to get their apartment back after they lose a bet with Joey and Chandler. Some of the not-quite-as-momentous-but-no-less-amusing events covered here include Joey trying to break his personal record for stuffing Oreo cookies in his mouth, the girls spending the afternoon in wedding dresses and Ross unveiling his indescribable "sound" on the synthesiser. --Leslie Felperin

An art house movie that asks questions about the morality of art both on and off screen, The Pornographer is a hard-hitting yet strangely unmoving film. Very much a product of the French school of intellectual cinema, the filmmaker of the title is Jacques Laurent (played by Jean Pierre Leaud), a one-time director of adult films who, finding himself down on his luck, is forced to return to his old medium. Far from being a gaudy Boogie Nights style exposé of an unknown world, the film focuses on Laurent's inner turmoil and his rapidly disintegrating relationship with his wife, as well as his restored one with his son Joseph (Jeremie Renier). Director Betrend Bonello handles this material well, if overdoing the art house clichés a little, but the problem with the film (or for some its strong point) comes with the fairly hardcore sex scenes, presented as part of Laurent's movie. While intended to reflect the emptiness of the character's soul, it is hard to see past them as just an attention-grabbing device. Then again, can a film about pornography legitimately not feature sex? One suspects that this debate will run and run and, in its way, The Pornographer has much to say on the subject. On the DVD: The Pornographer's intended release fell foul of the BBFC, who objected to one particularly explicit scene, a continuing argument that provides much of the material for the DVD's extra features. There is a reproduction of the BFFC ruling, a statement in reply from Bonello (which demonstrate the similarities he shares with his fictional counterpart, certainly when it comes to a vision of erotica) and an excellent essay from critic Pierre Perrene. In addition there are biographies, the cinematic trailer and an option to view the film with or without English subtitles. Whatever the moral questions involved, Bonello's film is a visual treat and his stylish eye is well represented by this format. --Phil Udell

While groundbreaking director Mario Bava (Black Sunday, Black Sabbath) remains the most well-known purveyor of Italian Gothic horror, many other filmmakers tried their hand at the form throughout the 1960s as part of a hugely prolific and popular cycle. Gothic Fantastico presents four off-the-beaten path titles from this classic period, all of which demonstrate Italy's ability to expand genre beyond the classic literary monsters that dominated elsewhere. Gaslighting abounds in Massimo Pupillo's Lady Morgan's Vengeance - a delicate tale of romance and mystery, with a sprinkling of sadism and the supernatural - as newlywed Sir Harold Morgan (Paul Muller, Nightmare Castle) attempts to destroy his new bride (Barbara Nelli, Double Face) with help from his sinister maid (Erika Blanc, Kill, Baby Kill!). Meanwhile, the perverse influence of Poe is used to great effect in Alberto De Martino's The Blancheville Monster - a tale of family curses and madmen in the attic, as Emilie de Blancheville (Ombretta Colli, Gladiator of Rome) returns home to her brother Rodéric (Gérard Tichy, Hatchet for the Honeymoon) and discovers her own family may be out for her blood. Mino Guerrini's The Third Eye features not only a very early role for Italian cult film icon Franco Nero, but a plot that borrows several elements from Hitchcock, layered with a whiff of necrophilia. Finally, Damiano Damiani's The Witch takes a more avant-garde approach, when a young historian (Richard Johnson, Zombie Flesh Eaters) is lured to work for an ageing woman, only to be held captive when he becomes obsessed with her beautiful daughter (Rosanna Schiaffino, The Killer Reserved Nine Seats). Madness, obsession and messed up families are the order of the day in these four lesser-known monochrome gems from Italy's peak Gothic period, fully restored in 2K from their original negatives and presented alongside an array of in-depth extras. Three films in different genres based around the same set of characters. Each film stands alone but once viewed as a whole the scale and skill of Belvaux's cinematic triple vision is revealed. One: A hard-boiled film-noir and a dramatic start to Lucas Belvaux's trilogy. After a bloody escape from prison political terrorist Bruno (played by the director himself) attempts to resume his campaign of bombings and assassinations. But his colleagues have now comfortably settled into a bourgeois lifestyle so he's forced to go it alone stopping at nothing to achieve his goals... Two: Afraid that he might be dying Alain conceals the truth from Cecil the woman he loves. Despite her instincts she suspects he's lying and prefers to imagine he's having an affair. Yet is it possible everyone is in on the conspiracy including best friend Agnes? Three: Manise is equally devoted to his wife Agn''s and his job as a cop. He has done deals with the local crime boss too. However his troubles are triplefold: he is trying to capture Bruno dealing with the local crime boss and dealing with his wife's addiction to morphine. All these events are threatening to collide with tragic consequences... This is a powerful cinema experience and presented on four DVDs in a specially designed box set Lucas Belvaux's achievements are more evident since they offer the chance to watch simultaneously three different scenes which take place at the same moment in time. Comparisons have been made to Kieslowski's classic 'Three Colours' trilogy but 'One Two And Three' form a trilogy of outstanding achievement.
