  • She's So Lovely [1997]She's So Lovely | DVD | (08/04/2002) from £13.17   |  Saving you £4.81 (47.25%)   |  RRP £14.99

This film springs from a long-neglected script by the late John Cassavetes. The script was directed by his son Nick and stars Sean Penn, who was set to star before the elder Cassavetes died. Penn plays Eddie, an alcoholic ne'er-do-well who loves his young wife Maureen (Robin Wright Penn) too much. When she is brutalised by a neighbour, Eddie goes nuts--and lands in a mental hospital for 10 years. When he is freed, he finds Maureen remarried to contractor Joey (John Travolta), with whom she has two children. But Eddie's love is too strong not to draw him back to her and make one final plea for her affection. A great showcase for all of the actors involved (the cast includes James Gandolfini, Harry Dean Stanton and Gena Rowlands), with a particularly fine performance by Sean Penn. The film has the make-it-up-as-you-go feeling of John Cassavetes's work, as well as the kind of naked emotions that were his hallmark.--Marshall Fine

This romantic tearjerker from writer Nicholas Sparks (Dear John, The Notebook) can be formulaic at times, but it stays interesting thanks to pacing and snappy dialogue. Miley Cyrus sulks through The Last Song as troubled teen Ronnie, who resents her father (Greg Kinnear) for divorcing Mom (Kelly Preston) and leaving the family. A piano prodigy, Ronnie refuses to play after her father leaves, and she snubs admission to Julliard. Ronnie and her wisecracking brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman) are sent to spend the summer with their father in a small Georgia beach town. Handsome townie Will (Liam Hemsworth) strikes up a tense relationship with Ronnie and, true to romance formula, they fall in love. Ronnie softens her attitude and the ice between father and daughter begins to melt away. But Dad has a tragic secret, and in the end, music helps Ronnie open her heart and heal. Cyrus gives a predictable performance as the all-attitude Ronnie, but she's helped along by Coleman's cute-little-brother shtick (which can be a bit heavy-handed, but the youngster is a scene-stealer). Veteran actors Preston and Kinnear are one-dimensional, but The Last Song is a harmless teen romance--who's watching the adults, anyway? --Francine Ruley

In the early 1960's the Goodyear Tire Company commissioned five short jazz films. It was part promotional device, part good will gesture. In both regards, it was successful. The programs were originally filmed on 35 mm negative. The sound was recorded in professional stereo. However, the shows were presented in 16mm with a mono track. Over the years, the prints faded because of an unstable colour print stock. What was once an extremely professional, good looking endeavour, now looked like an out of date historic relic. Storyville Films has returned to the original source material for this DVD presentation. The original 35mm source has been transferred to video tape and the original stereo masters have been restored. Now you will see the gorgeous detail and hear the excellent sound that was captured in the early sixties. These films now stand as some of the most technically advanced jazz films, featuring some irreplaceable music.

  • Will and Grace: Series 1 (Episodes 1-8) [2001]Will and Grace: Series 1 (Episodes 1-8) | DVD | (03/06/2002) from £6.54   |  Saving you £13.45 (67.30%)   |  RRP £19.99

Hit American sitcom Will and Grace is as perky as Friends and as wittily urbane as Frasier. The premise concerns Will (Eric McCormack), a mildly uptight lawyer who agrees to let his best friend, interior designer Grace (Debra Messing), to become his flatmate. Their relationship has all the hallmarks of lovers--emotional dependency, little things that get on each others' nerves, strong mutual interests and volcanic arguments. The only snag is that while Grace is straight, Will is gay. Though not shy of poking sharp fun at that situation, Will and Grace is among sitcom's most potent and sophisticated antidotes to homophobia. Though initially a little too pleased with its own camp pertness, the show grows and grows on you with successive episodes, finally becoming indispensable. It also benefits from secondary characters Jack (Sean P Hayes) and Karen (Megan Mullally), also gay and straight respectively, both outrageously and hilariously irresponsible characters: he a free spirit and freeloader, she’s "working" as Grace's assistant, even though she doesn't need the money, having married it. Despite its diamond and rapid-fire punch-lines, Will and Grace conveys enough sense of the main characters' lovelorn predicament to prevent it from becoming too cute.--David Stubbs

  • Manchester United - Beyond the Promised Land [2000]Manchester United - Beyond the Promised Land | DVD | (27/11/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

It may be stating the obvious, but if you are a fan or in any way interested in Manchester United the football team or global brand then you will love this video and any critical appraisal is largely an irrelevance. If, however, you share the antipathy of most other football fans and see them only through a red mist, it is unlikely to bring much joy. After an opening celebration of the last-minute treble-winning triumph in the Champions League and a brief tribute to the victims of the Munich air crash, the film settles into a fairly sedate account of the 1999/2000 championship season. Scenes from the United backroom are interspersed with various supporters providing a more passionate perspective on following the team for whom success has become almost a given in recent years. These include the bartenders who travel all the way from New York to attend the game in which Real Madrid ended United's hopes of successive European titles (which is not in the least bit hilarious).Among the more corporate elements of the club's set-up on display are a forum encouraging sponsors to develop traditional and new markets (China will be huge) and various meetings with Vodafone to explore their newly agreed partnership (look out for ringing tones based on your favourite terrace chants). Given the inherent excitement usually generated by what happens on the pitch, the overall tone of the film is surprisingly flat with what little action that remains being reduced to very brief goal highlights and largely divested of its significance. Such episodes as Beckham's supposed fracas with the manager, the mysterious disappearance of Mark Bosnich, and the press conference fiasco that marked the non-arrival of Ruud Van Nistelroy are touched upon, but potential controversy is subsumed into the general glorification of the club's march for glory. One memorable scene where successive players' teams fail to answer any questions correctly at a pub-style quiz and are trounced by the management, will not do anything to reverse the common perception of footballers' acumen off the pitch. Bitter and twisted? Not this reviewer: altogether now "1-0 to the Arsenal, 1-0 to the Arsenal". --Steve Napleton
