Lewis (Gun Crazy, Terror in a Texas Town), drenched with sleazy innuendo, came late to the film noir cycle, but is now considered one of the defining examples of the genre, not least thanks to some extraordinary chiaroscuro lighting by the great cinematographer John Alton (already an Oscar-winner for An American in Paris) and a heartbreaking performance by Jean Wallace (No Blade of Grass) as Brown s troubled girlfriend. The film also boasts a menacing early performance from a pre-stardom Lee Van Cleef (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) as one of Brown s henchmen.   Out of this world" is probably the best way to describe the style and content of Westlife's home-coming live performance in Dublin, Where Dreams Come True. It's also a fair description (in the inter-galactic sense) of the short film that opens the concert, when Shane, Kian, Mike, Nicky and Bryan are beamed down to Earth (or more precisely to their native Ireland) from deepest space. Decked out in white for the opening and closing segments of the concert it's easy to see why some fans view the five guys as modern-day angels. Appropriately for the song "Flying Without Wings" the guys manage to perform the song strapped to a scaffolding hoist that gently floats above the audience. Overall the concert is a spectacular all-singing, all-dancing affair that showcases their biggest hits and selected album tracks, aided by an amazing set and stage effects. In places the performance does seem rather twee, especially their rural-themed rendition of "Seasons of the Sun" when the group emerge from behind the set decked in stylish country-wear. The moves performed by the all-female dance troupe to "I Have a Dream" are also plain awful. Tour favourites "When You're Looking Like That" and "Uptown Girl" are the hot highlights of this stunning live release. On The DVD: there are plenty of added extras on this DVD including two documentaries, "Access All Areas" and "World of Our Own". However, neither of these featurettes represent the group in a particularly positive light, with the boys spending most of their time crowing about the numerous number ones they've had and how wonderful they are. The "Access All Areas" documentary depicts the guys in a particularly cruel light--playing football outside their concert arena whilst fans torturously watch on behind a wire fence. The exclusive When Dreams Come True website, which can only be accessed through the DVD-Rom link, is amazing though, with state-of-the-art graphics, animations and content (eg: lyrics of top Westlife songs, multi-media biographies and interviews with the guys). Look out for the bonus music video for "When You're Looking Like That" (never released as a single in the UK).--John Galilee

  Often hailed as the greatest ever British sitcom, Fawlty Towers is closer to the more elaborate tradition of farce. Comprising two series made in 1975 and 1979, the total of just 12 episodes were painstakingly constructed by writers John Cleese and Connie Booth. Unlike most British farce, however, Fawlty Towers deals with the big themes--death, psychology, xenophobia and even sex-o-phobia (Basil's marriage to Sybil is the most sterile ever depicted in a sitcom). Basil's contempt for his guests is, of course, legendary. It takes little from patrons to unleash his sledgehammer sarcasm: "Rosewood, mahogany, teak? Sorry, I was wondering what you'd like your breakfast tray made out of", he sneers at a guest who dares to request breakfast in bed. Like every Englishman, he wants to be king of his own castle and resents having to take in lodgers to maintain the place, especially the open-necked younger generation, whom he regards as sub-human. Mostly, though, Fawlty Towers is comedy of exasperation--who can forget the "damn good thrashing" Basil gives his clapped-out car, or the nervous breakdowns he almost suffers trying to make himself understood to Manuel? It's also comedy of embarrassment. The very fear of losing his dignity generally leads Basil into the most spectacularly undignified of predicaments. His inevitable misery is our sheer delight. -- David Stubbs On the DVD: each six-episode season is given its own disc with a commentary track from John Howard Davies and Bob Spiers, directors of Season 1 and Season 2 respectively. The third disc has all the additional material, the best of which are new interviews with John Cleese, Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales. Also included are text biographies of all the leads and the guest stars, a short background featurette on Torquay and the hotel owner who is said to have inspired Basil, a very short blooper reel of outtakes and a brief teaser with Cleese in character entitled "Cheap Tatty Review". Much of this extra material was comfortably fitted onto the individually available Season 1 and 2 discs, so it's a bit of a mystery why a third disc was deemed necessary for the box set. --Mark Walker

  1 Giant Leap is a unique project devised by Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto (formerly of Faithless). It's a DVD accompaniment to an album that "fuses spoken word, musicians, sound, rhythms and images from all around the world". Subdivided into themes including "God: Blasphemy", "Inspiration", "Death" and "Happy", its aim is to explore and discover the "unity in diversity" and to this end, they profess to have assembled the "most happening musicians, authors, scientists and thinkers we could find" to offer their own thoughts interspersed with a river of eclectic ambient and world music along with images captured on their global travels. While the list of contributors does include Kurt Vonnegut and Brian Eno, whose contribution regarding olive trees is typically apposite and perfectly formed, one might wonder if the likes of Big Brother presenter Davina McCall and an ex-porn star really represent the vanguard of global thinking. The musical contributors include some artists seemingly past their sell-by date, such as Eddie Reader and Neneh Cherry, while the participation of Robbie Williams might make some groan. Furthermore, this sort of audio-visual imagery runs the danger of resembling the language of modern advertising, with its soothing, pan-global blandishments used to promote multinational industry. And yet, for all one's doubts, this project really does work. So often, ethnic music is drowned in bland, new-age "muzak" to make it palatable to Western ears. Here, it is heightened. A free-thinking, free-flowing context is provided in which all shine, including Michael Stipe and even Williams himself. This is a laudable project that demonstrates the possibility of working in margins unspoiled by commercialism is still alive. On the DVD: 1 Giant Leap on disc includes an accompanying booklet, amply packed with text and illustration. The 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound is particularly robust and bass-heavy. Extras include videos for the two singles, "Braided Hair" featuring Arrested Development's Speech and Neneh Cherry, and "My Culture", featuring Faithless's Maxi Jazz, both of which encapsulate the musical and ideological themes of the project as a whole. --David Stubbs
