  A "Light Universe" and a "Dark Zone" keep good and bad apart for the characters of Lexx, even though it's often hard to tell the difference between the two in this offbeat and unique sci-fi show that delights in its own nastiness. The show's Canadian creators, "Supreme Beans" Paul Donovan, Lex Gigeroff, and Jeffrey Hirschfield--partnered with German money and studio facilities--intended every episode to be, in their words, "a nasty adventure". With flashes of nudity and surgical gore, and a collection of extreme hairstyles and accents, the overall look is often akin to a sci-fi Eurotrash. Aboard the stolen 10-kilometre-long spaceship Lexx (designed to look like a dragonfly) are the "Dirty Three-and-a-Half": insufferable coward Stanley H Tweedle (Brian Downey), the Edward Scissorhands clone and 2000 years-dead Kai (Michael McManus), decapitated and lovestruck robot head 790 (voiced by writer Hirschfield), and the skimpily wardrobed Zev (19-year-old Eva Habermann). It's with the last of these characters that the show generated its main audience and proved itself totally indifferent to regular boundaries of TV formatting. A disregard both for genre conventions and good taste makes the show a constant series of surprises. --Paul Tonks On the DVD: The first films's disc features a behind-the-scenes documentary with the show's creators talking generally about the intent of the films, a text interview with Jeffrey Hirschfield on his dual role as writer and voicing robot head 790, plus a hilarious "Purity Test" quiz to see how much of a fan you are. A handful of highly ironic and entertaining musical numbers punctuate her performances. The original stage version of the show played in front of sold-out audiences in New York City and Los Angeles. The LA Times called Jesus Is Magic savagely effective as ruthlessly provocative as anything since the heyday of Lenny Bruce. Liam Lynch the fast rising video and film director whose credits include the hit movie Tenacious D In: The Pick Of Destiny collaborated with Silverman to adapt her show to the big screen. The film also stars Bob Odenkirk Brian Posehn and Silverman's comedian/actor sister Laura Silverman along with Silverman's musical band The Silver Men. Despite the current political climate in Jesus Is Magic Silverman tackles such pitch-black topics as September 11th unwanted body hair the Holocaust old age and spins them into decidedly un-politically correct comedic gold. Since Jesus Is Magic was released in America and her television series has become a critically acclaimed hit Silverman's popularity is making its way to the UK. Her appetite for outrageous comedy was recently validated by hilarious exchange of YouTube videos between her and boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel host of the popular weeknight U.S. chat show The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

  This is the film based on the 1970s TV sitcom Man About the House, made during the same period with the same cast. At the time, the whole idea of a single man and two single women sharing a flat, however (more-or-less) platonically, seemed terribly naughty. The scriptwriters wickedly stirred things up even further by making Richard O'Sullivan's character a randy-but-gentlemanly heterosexual, despite being a catering student--after all, in the 70s everyone just knew that all chefs were roaring poofs. The trio's sex-starved landlady (Yootha Joyce) and her rodent-like, impotent husband (Brian Murphy) were later to get their own series, George and Mildred. The plot is a perfunctory affair, as property developers attempt and fail to demolish the street in which the protagonists live. That said, the script (cowritten by John Mortimer) isn't really narrative-driven anyway, it's purely an excuse for the characters to interact with the will-they-won't-they-ooh-they-are-a-bit relationship between Robin and Chrissie (Paula Wilcox) and practically invites the viewer to cheer them on. While the transition to the big screen caused the idea to lose much of its energy, as a dollop of comedy nostalgia Man About the House is still great fun. And if you don't laugh at the jokes, just check out the clothes, cars, hairstyles and makeup, not to mention all that cigarette smoking! --Roger Thomas
