  This feelgood musical drama tells the story of composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's early career as a Russian Naval Academy cadet and an imaginary meeting with an exotic dancer who might have inspired one of his great works. It's 1865, and the young Rimsky-Korsakov (Jean-Pierre Aumont) is a sailor on a two-year world tour with the Russian Navy. When the ship docks in Tangiers, his search for a piano on which to play his latest work brings him into the fold of a family of down-at-heel Spanish aristocrats. The daughter Cara (Yvonne de Carlo) works secretly as a veiled dancer with the stage name Scheherazade in order to support her mother Madame de Talavera (Eve Arden)'s spendthrift habits. Rimsky-Korsakov is captivated by Cara, and her tales from the mysterious East begin to infiltrate his compositions. As the week's furlough flies by, young Nikolai's musical and amorous aspirations come under threat from Brian Donlevy's severe Captain Vladimir Gregorovitch and dashing shipmate Prince Mischetsky (Phillip Reed) but a harmonious ending is on the horizon. Written and directed by Walter Reisch (Ninotchka, Gaslight, Niagara), the film also stars Charles Kullmann, a leading tenor with the Metropolitan Opera, who is smuggled aboard as the ship's doctor to perform many of Rimsky-Korsakov's enduring melodies.

  Brian Yuzna's Bride of Re-Animator (1990) was one of the last hurrahs for special-effects-based horror films before CGI extended the ease with which the impossible could be put on screen. Like its predecessor, Re-Animator, Bride is very loosely based on HP Lovecraft's stories of Herbert West, a scientist with a taste for investigation that knows no boundaries, especially not those of good taste. He and his agonisingly liberal sidekick Cain have discovered an improvement on their original serum--now they can not only bring the dead back to life but also assemble them from parts first. Jeffrey Combs gives a wonderfully dour performance as West, not even cracking a smile when a creature he has concocted from fingers and an eye-ball is running around the room unseen by a pestering detective. This is the sort of film that constantly escalates its macabre elements--the surviving villain of the first film has been left as simply an animated head, but that does not stop him pursuing his revenge on West, nor finding ways of using West's new techniques along the way. It all makes for cheerfully gruesome fun. On the DVD: Bride of Re-Animator is presented in an anamorphic widescreen visual aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and its Dolby 2.0 does what little can be done with the muddy soundtrack, but is rather better with the jauntily creepy score. The only special features on this Tartan issue are the trailer, the director's production notes and a reel of trailers for other Tartan horror movies. --Roz Kaveney

  The twist of private-eye show Randall & Hopkirk Deceased is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, only to pop up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). In theory, the supernatural streak--which meant a complex set of rules about Marty's appearances and effects on the physical world--should lead the show into wilder territory, but most episodes squander the team's unique abilities on ordinary cases about blackmail and murder-for-profit. A persistent subplot has the living Jeff getting cosy with the dead Marty's widow Jean (Annette Andre) to the discomfort of her late husband. The elementary effects and the nice underplaying of the leads have a certain period charm, and the show could afford a high calibre of special guest villains and dolly birds. A 1990s remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original. --Kim Newman
