Wes Craven was tempted back to the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, in partnership with writers Bruce Wagner (Wild Palms) and Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), to script this fun, action-oriented sequel directed by Chuck Russell (The Mask). Langenkamp (as the world's only teenage psychiatrist) and Saxon return, but the heroine is debuting Patricia Arquette, who has the power to pull her friends into her dreams and thus assemble an army to take on Freddy, who begins here to spout those post-death witticisms that became a trademark. A nun reveals the villain's backstory as "the bastard son of a hundred maniacs". It's full of wild images and effects, such as the sleepwalker turned into a puppet strung on his ripped-out veins, and pays homage to Ray Harryhausen with not only an animated Freddy puppet but also his evil, walking skeleton. --Kim Newman

This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons and, granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. In Stand by Me he played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bully vampire who leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay. --Jeff Shannon

  • Lipstick Jungle Series 1Lipstick Jungle Series 1 | DVD | (26/12/2008) from £11.98   |  Saving you £8.01 (66.86%)   |  RRP £19.99

Based on the Candace Bushnell novel of the same name, Lipstick Jungle is what the ladies on Sex and the City might have been like, had they been married characters rather than New York singletons. Brooke Shields stars as Wendy Healy, a high-powered movie mogul who can't get through a day without talking to (or lunching with) her best friends Nico Reilly (Kim Raver, 24) and Victory Ford (Lindsay Price, Beverly Hills, 90210). Nico is the editor of a high-end lifestyles magazine who is making up for her lack of a sex life at home by having an affair with a young photographer's assistant. Victory, the trio's single gal, is a fashion designer whose creations have fallen out of favour, but is adored by her rich boyfriend Joe Bennett (Andrew McCarthy). Each is a fixture on the annual "New York's 50 Most Powerful Women" list, but their day-to-day problems of juggling careers with demanding personal lives (i.e., men!) are at the forefront of each episode. As superficial fluff, the show is a fun watch. Will Wendy's former nanny write a tell-all book? How does Nico juggle a husband she loves with a young lover she lusts after? And is Victory really so naive that she won't figure out that her ambitious assistant stole all her best designs? Shields is a charming actress with a decent knack for comedy and Price is good enough as the flaky friend. But with lines like, "When they smell fear in this town, it's over," it's Raver who lends passion and credibility to this series--which is much better than the so-so book on which it is based, but not yet up to the quality that made Sex and the City a must-see show. --Jae-Ha Kim

  • Flowers In The Attic [1987]Flowers In The Attic | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £17.97   |  Saving you £-8.99 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

This screen adaptation of Flowers in the Attic, Virginia Andrews' classic teen novel of adolescent torment and forbidden love, shies away from what made the book so hugely popular, namely the incestuous sex between the two older children, Cathy (Kristy Swanson) and Chris (Jeb Stuart Adams). When the father of four beautiful blond children is suddenly killed, their mother (Victoria Tennant) takes them to the family home she fled 17 years earlier. Their fierce and frightening grandmother (Louise Fletcher) locks them in an upstairs room, from which the only escape is into the cluttered and cobwebbed attic. The children's isolation gets more and more extreme as their mother abandons them, finally even slowly poisoning them to gain her father's inheritance. The movie insinuates but does not make explicit incestuous longing in all directions: Cathy's father brings her special presents before he dies, Chris scrubs Cathy's back in the tub, Chris has a noticeably stronger attachment to their mother than Cathy does--not to mention that the grandmother whips the half-naked mother in front of the grandfather. Fletcher brings a bit of bite to her role, and the movie occasionally rises to absurdly lurid zest. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
