  One of the most successful martial arts movies of all time, if not the best, Enter the Dragon (filmed in 1973) was Bruce Lee's last completed film and the first significant meeting of Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema. But it wasn't an entirely harmonious marriage, with on-set communication breakdowns and rows resulting in some poor scripting, editing and overdubbing. Lee plays a Shaolin fighter recruited by British intelligence to spy on renegade Shaolin master and crime overlord Han (Shih Kien) by entering the martial arts tournament held on Han's fortress island. If the plot sounds a touch contrived, it is. Han's fluffy white cat, clawed hand and ruthless megalomania suggest nothing so much as a classic Bond villain, and the plot has holes you could pilot a large Junk through (Lee's discovery that his sister committed suicide rather than submit herself to Han's men is particularly weak). Nonetheless, Lee is utterly compelling. At the height of his skills, he choreographed, directed and performed fight scenes which are among the most gripping ever filmed, including the classic underground scene which, in this uncut version, contains Lee's incredible (and previously deleted) nun-chuck display. John Saxon and karate champion Jim Kelly ably support him as fellow contestants, with the massive Yang Sze playing Bolo, Han's lieutenant. Despite being cheesy and overblown, Enter the Dragon is a highly entertaining and accessible Kung Fu film and a showcase for Bruce Lee's considerable skills. --Duncan Thomson

  A little over-extended as a two-hour movie, The Eligible Bachelor was one of several such feature-length productions made (late 1992) in Granada Television's long-running Sherlock Holmes series. Based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor, this TV movie finds Holmes (the ailing Jeremy Brett, playing an increasingly darker and more neurotic detective) and Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke) called upon to help in a case involving the disappearance of Henrietta Doran (Paris Jefferson), fiancé of the noble Lord Robert St Simon (Simon Williams), who was last seen with a former lover of St Simon's, Flora Millar (Joanna McCallum). The unimaginative Scotland Yard instantly arrests Millar on suspicion of foul play, but it is Holmes who has to find the missing woman. Fans of the entire series might best enjoy this slightly clunky programme, though there is much of interest about Brett's performance to recommend it. --Tom Keogh

Here we see Chen Shen (Bruce Li) returning to his home town of Macao with his brother Chen Zhen's (Bruce Lee) ashes to be laid to rest. He goes to see his blind mother and younger brother but not before being confronted by Mr Chu the interpreter and a gang of Japanese warriors. After dealing with them he makes a promise to his mother not to fight again and tries to start a new life but the Japanese are everywhere. Shen goes to see his uncle where his top student Shun Shu Tang gets jealous of Shen's return and feels he will take over the school and claim his teacher's daughter for his bride. Meanwhile the Japanese recognise Chen Shen as the brother of Chen Zhen and the one who finally put an end to the Hung Ku School in Shanghai. Revenge and old scores have to be settled by the Japanese. They use the interpreter to disgrace and accuse Chen Shen of murder and kill Shen's mother and younger brother. Chen can stand this treachery no more so turns his hands yet again to fists of fury. This is a great movie for all kung fu fans and sees a return performance of Wei Ping Ao who comes back as the evil interpreter Mr Chu.
