  Director Sam Raimi may now be renowned for his trilogy of Spider-Man films, but for many, it’s the Evil Dead films that hold a special place in their heart. Unsurprisingly, too, for here’s a horror film that’s got no sign of Hollywood studio interference, no wish to tone things down, and instead finds a massively talented film maker stretching a small budget to impressive ends. The Evil Dead, along with its sequels, has built up a cult following since its original release, but it’s also earned a deserved respect too. For this is a film that’s jammed with energy, and genuinely bursting with ideas. Granted, in the years since its release, many have been mined by the horror genre. But there’s still so much to admire and enjoy. The film, if you’ve not had the pleasure, stars Bruce Campbell as Ash, one of a group of five friends who head to a cabin in the woods on holiday. While there, unwisely as it turns out, they play a tape that they shouldn’t, and all hell breaks loose. It also sets loose a very enjoyable half and a half of stylish, and gory horror. It comes out of its Blu-ray release surprisingly well, too. Here’s a film shot on old stock, that should be showing plenty of wear and tear. And yet the 1080p transfer here is a fine job, backed up by an always-welcome package of extras. The end result is both a fine way to enjoy the movie for the first time, or arguably the best way to revisit it. Either way, it’s very much a recommended buy. --Jon Foster

Black Beauty This faithful adaptation of Anna Sewell's children's classic tells the adventures of a young boy and a spirited horse. Beginning life on a country estate the young colt Beauty is given away to cruel squire Sam Greene when he takes possession of the farm on which he lived. The horse then starts on an adventurous journey where he experiences the best and worst in human nature before finally being reunited with the boy who was his first friend. This is a classic and beautiful adaptation which the whole family will enjoy.

Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is trying to find out what's triggering Cole's visions but what appears to be a psychological manifestation turns out to be frighteningly real. It might be enough to scare off a lesser man, but for Malcolm it's personal--several months before, he was accosted and shot by an unhinged patient, who then turned the gun on himself. Since then, Malcolm has been in turmoil--he and his wife (Olivia Williams) are barely speaking, and his life has taken an aimless turn. Having failed his loved ones and himself, he's not about to give up on Cole. The Sixth Sense, M Night Shyamalan's third feature, sets itself up as a thriller, poised on the brink of delivering monstrous scares, but gradually evolves into more of a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. Many critics faulted the film for being mawkish and New Age-y, but no matter how you slice it, this is one mightily effective piece of filmmaking. The bare bones of the story are basic enough, but the moody atmosphere created by Shyamalan and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto made this one of the creepiest pictures of 1999, forsaking excessive gore for a sinisterly simple feeling of chilly otherworldliness. Willis is in his strong, silent type mode here, and gives the film wholly over to Osment, whose crumpled face and big eyes convey a child too wise for his years; his scenes with his mother (Toni Collette) are small, heartbreaking marvels. And even if you figure out the film's surprise ending, it packs an amazingly emotional wallop when it comes, and will have you racing to watch the movie again with a new perspective. You may be able to shake off the sentimentality of The Sixth Sense but its craftsmanship and atmosphere will stay with you for days. --Mark Englehart

On the surface he is an eternal student: charming witty and accomplished. Beneath the facade however he displays a brilliant and ruthless talent for lying and manipulating everyone around him. Our 'hero' becomes friendly with wealthy couple Dennis and Karen Parsons but his initial feelings of bitterness regarding their success become complicated by a frenzied affair with Karen. This spawns a wild chain of events from sex and adultery to marriage money and accusations of murder. Eventually he escapes the leafy Oxford suburbs and the long arm of the law and flees to South America leaving a trail of madness and intrigue in his wake.
