  Rio Grande was the last and least memorable of John Ford's famous cavalry trilogy (following Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon), but it none the less maintains an interesting continuity about the gentlemanly rules of military conduct. Here the focus is on the family. While creating a heated controversy over his handling of the Apache war, John Wayne must also contend with disgruntled wife Maureen O'Hara and estranged son Claude Jarman Jr, a new recruit trying to earn his father's love and respect. Ford suggests that there are two conflicting codes of honour in every cavalry officer's life, the personal as well as the professional, and that it takes an act of heroism to maintain both. It's fascinating to observe Wayne's progression throughout the trilogy, as his personal stakes intensify.   Brian Yuzna's Bride of Re-Animator (1990) was one of the last hurrahs for special-effects-based horror films before CGI extended the ease with which the impossible could be put on screen. Like its predecessor, Re-Animator, Bride is very loosely based on HP Lovecraft's stories of Herbert West, a scientist with a taste for investigation that knows no boundaries, especially not those of good taste. He and his agonisingly liberal sidekick Cain have discovered an improvement on their original serum--now they can not only bring the dead back to life but also assemble them from parts first. Jeffrey Combs gives a wonderfully dour performance as West, not even cracking a smile when a creature he has concocted from fingers and an eye-ball is running around the room unseen by a pestering detective. This is the sort of film that constantly escalates its macabre elements--the surviving villain of the first film has been left as simply an animated head, but that does not stop him pursuing his revenge on West, nor finding ways of using West's new techniques along the way. It all makes for cheerfully gruesome fun. On the DVD: Bride of Re-Animator is presented in an anamorphic widescreen visual aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and its Dolby 2.0 does what little can be done with the muddy soundtrack, but is rather better with the jauntily creepy score. The only special features on this Tartan issue are the trailer, the director's production notes and a reel of trailers for other Tartan horror movies. --Roz Kaveney

Judge Rousseau (Philippe Noiret) thinks this case would help his career as a right wing politician and therefore issues warrants of arrests to find any hobo fitting the description. But if Bouvier was declared insane the Judge's plan may become a trap...

  Originally a stage play, The Beast is a war story full of powerful symbolism. Its simple premise is that a lost Russian tank is hunted by a band of Mujahedeen guerrillas, and neither side will give up. It's the second year of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan (1981). Taj (Steven Bauer) is eager to prove himself in life, while tank commander Daskal (George Dzundza) feels he has nothing left to prove. As explained by a chanced-upon Holy Man, Taj (the rebel's Khan) is David, while the tank is symbolically Goliath or The Beast. The one person in the middle of all this is the gunner Koverchenko (Jason Patric) who experiences more than just a crisis of faith. With the tank lost in the Valley of the Jackal and pursued by a wild pack, it soon becomes hard to tell the three protagonists apart. Bloody and shocking, this is a tautly directed film by Kevin Reynolds (who went on to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld) once you get over the Russians having American accents On the DVD: the 1.85:1 presentation beautifully shows off the wide-angle photography of never endingly blue skies. A three-channel surround is good enough to pick up the echoing canyon walls. The extras are half-hearted, however, with just filmographies and, almost as an afterthought, trailers for two other movies. --Paul Tonks

  Gustav Flaubert's celebrated novel of obsessive ardour undergoes a dazzling retrofit for the screen, courtesy of French neurosis-master Claude Chabrol. The basic story (a woman's selfish quest for happiness ends up obliterating all she holds dear) may be the same but Chabrol's talent for biting through to the dark marrow of passion makes this a startling experience, even for people familiar with the source material or the numerous other cinematic adaptations. Casting Isabelle Huppert in the title role (she's at least a decade older than the standard conception of this wilfully tragic heroine) was a potentially risky gambit that paid off big; underneath her glorious surface lies a startling foundation of brilliant ice. The same can be said about this stunning film. Viewers intrigued by this potent actress-director pairing may also want to check out The Story of Women and the wonderful La Ceremonie. The film is in French with English subtitles. --Andrew Wright
