Unemployed men attempt a heist in The Right Of The Weakest a dry but thought-provoking Belgian drama. Taking time to develop its characters it sees two former steel workers team up with an ex con in an attempt to help Patrick a broke house husband who dreams of buying his wife a new moped. Their struggles are convincing and fittingly amusing but don't come here looking for laughs: the conclusion is sobering stuff. The Right Of The Weakest opens like a po-faced Belgian version of The Full Monty pleading for sympathy for its out-of-work heroes who are desperate for both cash and respect. Clubbing together to play the lottery they soon realise more drastic means are called for and turn to former robber Marc Pirmet (writer/director Lucas Belvaux) for advice.
In 1975 director Nicolas Philibert (Etre et Avoir) was a young assistant to film-maker Ren'' Allio. Together they made 'Moi Pierre Rivi''re ayant ''gorg'' ma m''re ma soeur et mon fr''re' ('I Pierre Rivi''re having cut the throat of my mother my sister and my brother') a little-seen film based on the disturbing true story of a peasant who murdered his family in 1835. All the main parts in 'I Pierre Rivi''re' were played by non-professional actors from Normandy. Here thirty years after the film's release Philibert takes his camera back to the region to learn about the lives of its stars during the intervening years. Weaving through time - between 1975 the present time and the nineteenth century - Philibert creates yet another captivating documentary.
The BFI’s acclaimed Jacques Tati remaster series continues with the world premiere High Definition release of Tati’s multi-award-winning third feature, Mon Oncle, in two different versions. This 1958 box-office hit confirmed his reputation as the foremost comic artist of his day and picked up a string of awards, including the 1959 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.Tati’s second outing as the accident-prone Monsieur Hulot takes him to Paris where the high-tech lifestyle of his relatives, the Arpels, is contrasted with his old-fashioned ways in a scruffy part of town. With an eye on the international market, and wishing to avoid subtitles (which he always disliked), Tati shot two versions of the film – Mon Oncle and My Uncle, the latter replacing French signs such as ‘Ecole’ and ‘Sortie’ with their English equivalents and dubbing much of the main dialogue into English. This specially remastered edition contains both versions.

Brian Yuzna's Bride of Re-Animator (1990) was one of the last hurrahs for special-effects-based horror films before CGI extended the ease with which the impossible could be put on screen. Like its predecessor, Re-Animator, Bride is very loosely based on HP Lovecraft's stories of Herbert West, a scientist with a taste for investigation that knows no boundaries, especially not those of good taste. He and his agonisingly liberal sidekick Cain have discovered an improvement on their original serum--now they can not only bring the dead back to life but also assemble them from parts first. Jeffrey Combs gives a wonderfully dour performance as West, not even cracking a smile when a creature he has concocted from fingers and an eye-ball is running around the room unseen by a pestering detective. This is the sort of film that constantly escalates its macabre elements--the surviving villain of the first film has been left as simply an animated head, but that does not stop him pursuing his revenge on West, nor finding ways of using West's new techniques along the way. It all makes for cheerfully gruesome fun. On the DVD: Bride of Re-Animator is presented in an anamorphic widescreen visual aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and its Dolby 2.0 does what little can be done with the muddy soundtrack, but is rather better with the jauntily creepy score. The only special features on this Tartan issue are the trailer, the director's production notes and a reel of trailers for other Tartan horror movies. --Roz Kaveney

In Les Noces Rouges Claude Chabrol extends his usual stinging examination of the French bourgeoisie family into the exaggerated realm of the tragi-comic all the while maintaining his signature elements of psychological terror and thrilling yet detached suspense. Based on an actual French murder case Les Noces Rouges is the story of two lovers each stuck in loveless marriages. Lucienne (Stephane Audran) is married to the frigid and obtuse Paul who is the semi-corrupt mayor of their small town. Pierre (Michel Piccoli) is Paul's deputy mayor and is married to a chronically ill and lifeless wife. An illicit affair of exaggerated passion explodes between Pierre and Lucienne and for a while their passion is enough for them. However when Pierre's wife mysteriously dies and Lucienne's husband discovers her infidelity the plot switches from its seemingly sleepy bourgeois tale of marital troubles and delves into the film noir stylings that could be compared to The Postman Always Rings Twice. The political duplicitousness enacted by Paul and Pierre behind closed doors in the small town's government offices is mirrored and magnified in the fractured narrative of the deranged and depraved transaction between the three players in this tale of love and lust gone sour.

The 35-hour work week has all of France in its thrall. This film turns it into a feature about economic and familial politics. Frank a business school graduate returns to his provincial hometown to take a management position in the factory where his father has been working for 30 years. First Frank makes the mistake of actually asking the workers on the assembly line for their opinions. Then upper management manipulates his findings to lay off employees. This creates a huge rift not only between labor and management but between father and son. A human morality tale that evokes paternal and filial love and illustrates the personal risk behind political ideas.

A triple bill of classic Luis Bunuel films, comprising 'That Obscure Object Of Desire', 'Phantom Of Liberty' and 'The Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeoisie'. That Obscure Object Of Desire: A passenger on a train pours a bucket of water over a young girl at the platform. Seemingly a random act, the man recounts in flashback how he came to be so obsessed with the girl... Phantom Of Liberty: Perhaps Bunuel's most surreal film, consisting of a series of loosely realted vignettes. <...
