  Antonio Banderas is the titular Desperado out for revenge against the drug-lord responsible for the death of his girlfriend in Robert Rodriguez's semi-sequel, semi-remake of his debut El Mariachi (1992). Set in a Mexican town, this is a contemporary Western that combines elements familiar from classic Sam Peckinpah movies with the post-Reservoir Dogs school of film-making. With a threadbare story and unbelievable characters acting in unbelievable ways the result is a repulsively blood-soaked comic-book treatment, in which the best scenes are bar-stool monologues by Steve Buscemi and Quentin Tarantino. The film also introduced Salma Hayek to English-speaking audiences. She's incandescently sensual here and survived a farcical rock-video-style sex scene to become a Rodriguez regular. On the DVD: Desperado is a Superbit DVD, meaning maximum disc space has been given to the film, with a data rate close to double that of a normal DVD, no extras and just a choice between Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks. The 1.78:1 anamorphically enhanced transfer is virtually flawless, with excellent detail, accurate colours and a refreshing absence of grain. The Dolby Digital soundtrack is very good and the DTS even better, though as this comparatively low-budget film was originally released in stereo it's not state-of-the-art even when remixed. Only those with high-end home cinema set-ups are likely to notice significant technical improvements over a standard DVD version. --Gary S. Dalkin

  Executive producer Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Spy Kids) is the driving force behind this energetic reboot of the popular Predator films, which pits the dreadlocked alien hunters against a rogues' gallery of human antiheroes, led by a bulked-up Adrien Brody. The Oscar winner acquits himself nicely in the role of a gritty mercenary who finds himself stranded on a jungle planet with a host of criminals and professional killers (among them such scene-stealers as Walton Goggins and Danny Trejo), as well as a seemingly innocent doctor, well played by Topher Grace. They've been deposited there to serve as living targets for a horde of Predators--whose looks, designed by Gregory Nicotero and Howard Berger, are impressively varied and sleek--that use the planet as their private hunting grounds. Laurence Fishburne is also on hand as a soldier who has managed to survive for years in the jungle; he, Brody, and Grace do much to make the pulpy dialogue by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch (adapting a premise penned by Rodriguez in the mid-'90s) palatable. Likewise, Hungarian director Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) lends a great deal of atmosphere and Rodriguez-style momentum to the picture--perhaps more than necessary, since the end result is, like the 1987 original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fun B-movie and nothing more, designed entirely to give moviegoers a slick, unchallenging roller-coaster ride. Having said that, it's a vast improvement over the 1990 sequel and the dreadful tie-ins with the Alien franchise, and should provide movie monster aficionados with an afternoon's worth of thrills. --Paul Gaita

Jackson) a representative from a government agency hires the chiseled athlete and turns him into a secret agent with a mission to travel to Prague and collapse a dangerous terrorist cell operated by Yorgi (Martin Csokas) and the seductive Yelena (Asia Argento). Triple X is quickly drawn into Yorgi's lair a stunning chateau situated in the mountains that is equipped with every high-tech modern amenity imaginable along with a sizeable team of extra-large Slav bodyguards a laboratory staffed by top scientists and an always-ready gaggle of gorgeous concubines. Non-stop stunts pounding hard-core music elaborate sets and inventive costumes make this Rob Cohen-directed adrenaline overload a visually exciting aurally engaging highly entertaining success. The Fast & The Furious (Dir. Rob Cohen 2001): A nitro-burning joyride that makes outstanding use of special effects innovative camera work and a nonstop throbbing soundtrack. From the opening sequence the film never drops below the red line. Roaring along at breakneck speed Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew meet on the streets of L.A. each night to show off their high-powered racers. When new guy Brian (Paul Walker) wants to add his fuel to the fire he can't getup the money to race but offers up his car as collateral. In their tiny jacked compacts Dom Brian and Edwin (Ja Rule) burst into a high-gear race with Brian nearly beating perennial champion Dom. But in the final moments he loses the race and his car. Brian's debt is quickly cleared however when he saves Dom both from the cops and from a potentially violent encounter with Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) a rival gang lord. Dom takes Brian under his wing--a decision that disgusts his gang but delights his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster).
