It is difficult for him to hand over the reins of the operation to his successor and return to Berlin. He has learned to love the country, and he knows that while he is a man of influence here, at the Siemens headquarters in Berlin he is replaceable. During the farewell ball in his honour, Nanking is bombed by Japanese airplanes following the Japanese army's capture of Shanghai. As panic breaks out in the city, Rabe resolutely opens the company gates and offers refuge to the desperate families of his employees. Learning that the city will be attacked by the Japanese, an international diplomat Dr. Rosen (Daniel Bruhl) presents an idea to the city officials about the creation of a safety zone for civilians that had saved lives in Shanghai. John Rabe is nominated as chairman of the new safety zone. The committee also elect Dr. Wilson (Steve Buscemi), an American senior physician of the local hospital, who detests Rabe because he believes he works in the interests of the Third Reich. These three men must now learn to work together to try and protect the people. While the Imperial Japanese Army continue to unleash a wave of brutality, rape and murder on the civilian population, Rabe, Wilson and Rosen courageously negotiate with the Japanese and wrest a guarantee for a safety zone for the civilians. However hundreds of thousands of desperate people pour into the zone - much more than expected. The Japanese continue to harass and attack the population, and it becomes a life and death struggle as Rabe and his comrades try to protect them. The discovery of a dead female staffer in a White House restroom galvanizes a D.C. homicide cop (Wesley Snipes), but the results aren't hard to predict: the crime implicates the Oval Office, the presidential bureaucracy impedes the investigation, and so on. What isn't so predictable is that the whole thing leads to an improbable climax involving secret tunnels created by Abraham Lincoln. (Snipes's character, by the way, is a Civil War buff.) The creaky mystery feels a little anachronistic from the get-go, with some particularly corny and laughable dialogue. --Tom Keogh

  • The Michael Haneke CollectionThe Michael Haneke Collection | DVD | (09/10/2006) from £22.99   |  Saving you £17.00 (73.95%)   |  RRP £39.99

Hidden (aka. Cache) (2005): Writer/director Michael Haneke delivers a masterpiece of unsettlement with Hidden (Cache). Life seems perfect for Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche) a bourgeois Parisian couple who live in a comfortable home with their adolescent son Pierrot (Lester Makedonsky). But when an anonymous videotape turns up on their doorstep showing their house under surveillance from across the street their calm life begins to spiral out of control. Subsequent videotapes arrive accompanied by mysterious drawings and gradually Georges becomes convinced that he's being tormented by a figure from his past. But when he confronts him the man assures Georges he is innocent. A growing sense of guilt begins to rise in Georges as he recalls his less-than-angelic childhood yet for some reason he's unable to be completely honest with Anne. Soon their happy home is an emotional battleground leading to a climax that is breathtaking in its ferocity and ambiguousness. The Time Of The Wolf (2003): Michael Haneke directs this nightmarish vision of a post-apocalyptic world in which society has completely broken down. Isabelle Huppert plays Anne who flees the city with her husband Georges and their two children in the hope of finding safe refuge at the family's country home. But soon after arriving they learn they have made a terrible mistake and must embark on a gruelling odyssey through a country totally devastated by disaster without even the most basic of utilities such as water and electricity. Demonstrating yet again his unique and uncompromising cinematic vision Haneke assembles an all star cast for this typically challenging tense and gripping drama. The Piano Teacher (2001): The Piano Teacher is a powerful and controversial drama from award-winning Austrian film-maker Michael Haneke (Funny Games Code Unknown). Isabelle Huppert gives a performance of astounding emotional intensity as Erika Kohut a repressed woman in her late thirties who teaches piano at the Vienna Conservatory and lives with her tyrannical mother (Annie Girardot) with whom she has a volatile love-hate relationship. But when one of Erika's students the handsome and assured Walter Klemmer (Benoit Magimel) attempts to seduce her the barriers that she has carefully erected around her claustrophobic world are shattered unleashing a previously inhibited extreme and uncontrollable desire. Code Unknown (2000): Paris. A very busy boulevard. Someone throws a crumpled piece of paper into the outstretched hands of a beggar-woman. This is the bond which for an instant links the trajectories of several very different characters : Anne a young actress is on the threshold of making it in the cinema. Her boyfriend Georges is a war photographer he is rarely in France. His father is a farmer. Georges' younger brother Jean has no interest in taking over the farm. Amadou is a music teacher in an institute for deaf-mute children. His father a taxi driver originates from Africa. His little sister is deaf and it's because of her that Amadou has chosen his profession. Maria comes from Romania and sends home the money she gets from begging. Having been deported she goes back home to spend some time with her family before embarking on another humiliating journey to France. What do they have in common these characters and those whose path they cross?

A rash of daring bank robberies erupt in which the bad guys all wear the masks of worse guys--former presidents (nice touch). Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), an impossibly named former football star who blew out his knee and became a studly crime-busting fed instead, figures out that none of the heists occur during surfing season and all of them occur when, so to speak, surf's down. So obviously, he reasons, we're dealing with some surfer-dude bank robbers. He goes undercover with just such a group, led by a very spiritual, very guru-type guy played by Patrick Swayze, who has some muddled philosophies when it comes to materialism. If you can buy all that, this efficiently directed (by Kathryn Bigelow) action flick has some diverting moments (credit it, for example, for anticipating the extreme-sports fad). But Reeves' intelligent-sounding lines don't make him seem remotely intelligent and that plot makes him look positively brilliant. --David Kronke

In the second season, Klaus and Elijah united against their resurrected mother, Esther, who tortured them with demons from their pasts in an effort to persuade them to surrender their vampire bodies and become mortal. Esther, however, was only the harbinger, as Klaus learned that a long-standing curse had marked Hope for a life of isolation and terror at the hands of Esther's sister, the witch Dahlia, whose defeat came at great cost to the family. Season three finds Klaus and Elijah estranged from each other, even as both brothers adjust to life with their long-lost sister, Freya. Hayley suffers mightily at the hands of Klaus's petty vengeance, while Marcel and Davina rule the city under a new status quo. Exiled to a video-only release when its distributor balked after the flop of Jean-Claude Van Damme's previous film Knock Off, this lavish adventure deserved a chance at theatrical success. Action icon Van Damme recasts himself as a tragic romantic hero in this entertaining old-fashioned adventure with a modern sensibility. "The Muscles from Brussels" is no Brando, but he acquits himself nicely as a cocky boxer who double-crosses a Marseilles mobster and joins the French Foreign Legion when his half-baked plan backfires with tragic consequences. Surrounded by a better than usual cast (including Steven Berkoff as a Teutonic drill sergeant, Jim Carter as the ruthless ganglord, and Nicholas Farrell as a gentleman soldier with a taste for gambling and a dark past), Van Damme's dour performance sometimes gets lost in the colourful characters around him. But that's okay--there's adventure enough to go around and he's willing to share it. The Marseilles scenes evoke a quaint movie past with their smoky bars and shadowy streets, but the film is reborn as an ambitious, stoic platoon drama in the sands of French Morocco. Legionnaire alludes to classic films from Beau Geste to Casablanca to Lawrence of Arabia, but ultimately marches its own macho course, revelling in testosterone-driven heroics and bonding-under-fire while acknowledging the irony of its colonial mission ("We're the intruders", realises one soldier). It's a calculated risk for Van Damme (who also co-wrote and co-produced), but if Legionnaire never quite grasps the epic scope it's reaching for, it remains one of his best films, an handsome, exciting and surprisingly grim desert adventure. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

You are now entering Interzone, William S Burroughs' phantasmagorical land of junk, paranoia and crawly things. Best travel advice: "Exterminate all rational thought". In David Cronenberg's superbly shot, unnerving warp on the Burroughs novel, Naked Lunch, the novelist himself becomes a main character (played in an implacable monotone by Peter Weller), with elements from Burroughs' life--including the shooting of his wife during a "William Tell" game, and bohemian friends Kerouac and Ginsberg--added to frame the book's wild visions. This is, ironically, a somewhat rational approach to an unfilmable book (and it makes a hair-curling double bill with Barton Fink, another look at writerly madness, with both films sharing Judy Davis). Cronenberg is a natural for oozing mugwumps and typewriters that turn into giant bugs, of course. But in the end, this is really his own vision of the artistic process, rather than Burroughs' hallucinatory descent into hell. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com
