Seemingly low-key but as wittily crafted as the first two series, this season develops minor characters--Gunther, Central Perk's proprietor, who is in love with Rachel; Phoebe's half-brother Frank (played by rising-star Giovanni Ribisi); the chick and duck--who will play key parts later on while the foundations for crucial story lines developed in Series 4 are laid down. The most momentous story arc covers Rachel and Ross splitting up when she suggests they take a "break" and he sleeps with the girl from the copy shop. Phoebe gets to know her little brother Frank who falls in love with the much-older Alice, for whom Phoebe will bear triplets in a later series. Monica pines after Richard and then starts dating the millionaire Pete, although towards the end Chandler is trying to persuade her he's good boyfriend material--clearly an omen of things to come. --Leslie Felperin

Over the series, beginning with a Christmas episode, Granville is still being frustrated in his courtship of the forgetful Mavis by her formidable sister, Madge. He is sure however, that under Gastric's noisy stomach lies a man that would be deeply attractive to Madge and could distract her from his wooing of Mavis. Can he get them together? There's more romance with Mrs. Featherstone who has her eye on a new local, Mr. Newbold but can she surrender her desire for Granville? Elsewhere, Nurse Gladys has a new job to keep her occupied and Mrs Hussein is always full of local gossip. And Eric and Cyril are always in trouble with their wives but luckily they have Granville to sell them a solution.
Although it received mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike when released in 1998, this supernatural thriller benefits from a sustained atmosphere of anticipation and dread, and its combination of detective mystery and demonic mischief is handled with ample style and intelligence. Under the direction of Gregory Hoblit (who fared better with Primal Fear), Denzel Washington plays detective John Hobbes, who witnesses the gas-chamber execution of a serial killer (Elias Koteas). But when another series of murders begins, Hobbes suspects that the killer's evil spirit has survived and is possessing the bodies of others to do its evil bidding. Even Hobbes's trusted partner (John Goodman) thinks the detective is losing his grip on reality, but the dire warnings of a noted linguist (Embeth Davidtz) confirm Hobbes's far-out theory, and his case intensifies toward a fateful showdown. Although its idea is better than its execution, and the story's film noir ambitions are never fully accomplished, this slickly directed thriller has some genuinely effective moments in which evil forces are entwined into the fabric of everyday reality. Among the highlights is a memorable scene in which Detective Hobbes must track the killer as the evil spirit is transferred between many people via physical contact. Even if the film is ultimately less than the sum of its parts, it's an intriguing hybrid that resides in the same cinematic neighbourhood as Seven and The Silence of the Lambs with a cast that also includes Donald Sutherland and James Gandolfini. While her doting, wilfully uncomprehending mother (Maureen Stapleton) and stepdad with a secret (Karl Malden) try to have her judged incompetent and sent to an asylum, she fights for her day in court with the help of a hapless legal aid attorney (a refreshingly understated Richard Dreyfuss). James Whitmore presides over the hearing with a compassion and sense of justice that gives one faith in the system, and la Streisand (who developed and produced the project) sinks her teeth into the tempestuous role like a starving actress. The plot holds few surprises, but the drama lies in the characters; veteran director Martin Ritt brings out the best in a top-flight cast. --Sean Axmaker

By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd's The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters' great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humour that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualise The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed. The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerising film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon
Arguably the best series, this season's episodes really developed the characters as the show's popularity took off. Love is in the air as Rachel and Ross, both finally realising they're attracted to each other, nearly get it together, don't, and then finally do. Joey gets that role as Dr Drake Ramoray in Days of Our Lives and moves out of the flat he shares with Chandler, precipitating a bust-up between the two best buddies. Monica dates Richard, the hunky, older eye-doctor played by Tom Selleck, and Phoebe makes a video of that seminal song for a generation, "SmellyCat". --Leslie Felperin
Arkwright's, the nation's favourite corner shop, opens its doors again for series three of Roy Clarke's follow up to Open All Hours. The series begins with a Christmas special where Granville (David Jason) and Gastric (Tim Healy) find themselves playing marriage counsellors and Kath (Sally Lindsay) attempts to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. In other episodes Granville finds ever more ingenious ways to winkle out a small profit from customers like the ever-gullible Cyril (Kulvinder Ghir) and Granville's courtship of Mavis (Maggie Ollerenshaw) continues with more fish and chip dinners and trips out in Gastric's mini, but he's got to keep an eye out for Mrs. Featherstone (Stephanie Cole) who doesn't seem quite satisfied with Mr Newbold (Geoffrey Whitehead), her current candidate for the position of husband number four Meanwhile Granville's son, Leroy (James Baxter) still yearns for a delivery vehicle that won't spoil his success with dating; love-sick Gastric, full of heart but low on grey matter, is still trying to impress Mavis's formidable sister Madge (Brigit Forsyth); local gossip Mrs Hussein (Nina Wadia) continues her quest to catch Leroy's eye; and arch pessimist Eric (Johnny Vegas) is still looking for improvements in his own married life, which takes a turn for the worse when a mystery woman starts asking for him round the neighbourhood
