  • Mary Shelley's Frankenstein [Blu-ray] [1994]Mary Shelley's Frankenstein | Blu Ray | (12/10/2015) from £12.99   |  Saving you £-3.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Let's be honest: this should be titled Wretched Excess' Frankenstein. Swooping, wild, bloody, and energetic, this is bad moviemaking from the best, which makes it all the more loveable. Kenneth Branagh plays Victor Frankenstein, a man so obsessed with conquering death that he decides to create life. What he gets, after a protoplasmic mud wrestle, is a Mean Streets monster (Robert De Niro) that isn't particularly happy to be back from the dead or thrilled about all the stitches. Helena Bonham Carter may, at several points in this film, actually be channelling Ramtha. The supporting cast couldn't be peopled with better performers (Tom Hulce, John Cleese, Ian Holm) but they all look like they're ringside at some Ultimate Fighting competition. A must for any midnight movie collector for the shock factor alone. A hoot. --Keith Simanton

Desperate and Determined to Survive. Two convicts break out of Stone haven Prison in the dead of winter boarding a freight train with the intention of getting as far away as possible before their notoriously sadistic warden finds out. But the brakes fail and the driver has a heart attack sending hundreds of tons of metal hurtling through the snowy Alaskan wastes at terrifying and unstoppable speed. Based on a script by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai) with hardboiled prison slang added by real-life ex-con Edward Bunker (Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs) this riveting thriller also boasts Oscar-nominated performances from Jon Voight and Eric Roberts - with Voight playing spectacularly against type as a criminal so vicious that he served much of his sentence welded into his cell. Combining electrifying action with constant psychological tension (the only surviving member of the train crew is a young inexperienced woman) Runaway Train is one of cinema's great thrill-rides. • Extreme Measures [1997]Extreme Measures | DVD | (12/06/2000) from £7.03   |  Saving you £6.96 (99.00%)   |  RRP £13.99

Extreme Measures loses credibility near the climax when it sacrifices its hold on reality, but this entertaining, intelligent thriller effectively applies a formulaic plot to the complicated ethics of medical research. It also gives Hugh Grant an opportunity to break free from lightweight comedy by playing an emergency room surgeon who discovers that a renowned neurologist (Gene Hackman) has been conducting secret experiments on patients. When Grant fails to save a patient whose body later mysteriously disappears from the morgue, his investigation leads to an underground community of healthy homeless people, some of whom have been test subjects in Hackman's revolutionary, but criminal research toward a cure for paralysis. Co-produced by actor-model Elizabeth Hurley and capably directed by Michael Apted, this otherwise conventional thriller rises above its limitations by asking morally complex questions that give its far-fetched plot an extra kick of dramatic impact. --Jeff Shannon
