  The opening episodes of the fifth season of Stargate SG-1 had a lot of story left over from the nail-biting Season 4 cliffhanger, so this year had to open with a two-part conclusion. "Enemies" is aptly named because the team are faced with their biggest nemeses of all, Apophis and the Replicators, while stuck in another galaxy 120 years away from Earth. The biggest interpersonal problem facing them, however, is a switch in allegiance by Teal'c. Continuing into "Threshold", it takes the wisdom of his old master Bra'tac to perceive that all is not as it seems. But after so many attempts, can the enemies ever truly be vanquished? At long last, Sam gets a sympathetic and revealing spotlight. We get to see some of her home life and who she is away from the science lab. In her garage she has a 1940 Indian motorcycle, a 1961 vintage Volvo and a Harley. These aren't the only things she tinkers with in "Ascension", however. In a case of torn loyalties, she's confronted by an imaginary friend/lover (Young Indiana Jones himself, Sean Patrick Flanery). And then Jack seems to experience something very similar when the team gains a "Fifth Man". Both these episodes' storylines are threatened by the poisonous introduction of Colonel Simmons (John de Lancie, Star Trek's Q). --Paul Tonks

She will sing the role also at the Met in 2006/07.The other singers Anne Sofie von Otter Rainer Trost Gerald Finley Dietrich Henschel and Franz Hawlata are all idiomatic and beautifully singing so that the performance was regarded as an ideal interpretation of Richard Strauss' last opera by the French press. Ulf Schirmer is a German conductor who is regularly appearing at the Paris Opera the Deutsche Oper Berlin or the Vienna State Opera and recorded the same opera with Kiri Te Kanawa on Decca. Stage director Robert Carsen created a luxurious stage with colourful costumes which links up the tradition with the modern chic.

  Ong-Bak (2003): No stunt doubles no computer images no strings attached! When the head of a statue sacred to a village is stolen a dutiful but endearingly naive young martial artist is charged to go to the big city and finds himself taking on the underworld to retrieve it... Having drawn incredible comparisons to Bruce Lee and an early Jackie Chan Thai sensation Tony Jaa bursts onto the scene! Amazingly athletic not to mention charismatic Tony Jaa refuses to countenance the use of props (yes that's real glass barbed wire and metal spikes!) wire enhancement and faked blows. What full contact you see is most definitely what you get! Added to this is a gleefully choreographed chase on the highways of Bangkok involving a fleet of tuk-tuk vehicles (the three-wheeled taxi iconic to Thailand) knowing location photography (visitors to the capital will recognise Khao San Road and the exterior of top nightclub hangout Suzy's Pub) and most of all an affecting story of one man's struggle to uphold village traditions against Western modernisation. Warrior King (2005): The Ong-Bak team take martial arts on film to a whole new level! Two years in the making the second most expensive film in Thai history and with several seriously battered and bruised stuntmen into the bargain Warrior King once again is the perfect showcase for the talents of Tony Jaa. The life of young martial arts master Kham (Tony Jaa) is turned upside down when an international mafia syndicate based in Australia capture his two prize elephants and smuggle them to Sydney. Distraught that the animals reared as a symbol of his devotion to the King of Thailand and due to be presented to the monarch Kham is prompted to venture into a foreign land for the very first time. Rescuing the animals is no mean feat. Despite the assistance of Sergeant Mark (Petchtai Wongkamlao) a Thai police officer based in Australia and Pla (Bongkoj Khongmalai) a Thai girl sold into modern day slavery Kham faces an incredible challenge. The ruthless gang is headed by Madame Rose (Xing Jing) whose deadly henchmen include a Vietnamese thief (Johnny Nguyen) and the hulking 7' tall behemoth TK (Nathan Jones)... If you think you know what to expect from the Ong-Bak triumvirate of director Prachya Pinkaew star Tony Jaa and stunt co-ordinator Panna Rittikrai then think again! Plot necessarily takes a back-seat to this delirious example of extreme Muay Thai cinema the highlight of which must include a 4 minute(!) unbroken fight sequence in which Kham battles his way through the four floors of the Tom Yum Goong restaurant. No cuts no faked blows no letup in the action!

  Despite being directed by Roger Vadim, this And God Created Woman is not the 1956 classic but a loose remake from some 30 years later (1987) which attempts to update the original's themes. Rebecca De Mornay takes the central role, this time as Robin, a woman released from jail on parole due to her recent marriage to Billy (Vincent Spano). Once on the outside, she pursues her dreams of rock stardom and enters into a love triangle with state governor elect, James Tiernan (Frank Langella). Whereas Vadim's own original film may have exuded unspoken sexual tension (in no small part due to its star, Brigette Bardot), any pretence of subtlety here is lost as De Mornay sheds her clothes at every possible opportunity in the film's series of soft porn sex scenes, all accompanied--as indeed is virtually every moment of the film--by an appalling 80s rock soundtrack. The acting is uniformly awful, with De Mornay taking the prize for the worst performance of all, fighting a losing battle for the viewer's attention with her seemingly ever-growing hair. Indeed, And God Created Woman is best recommended to those who gleefully indulge in the worst that the cinematic arts have to offer and it would easily feature in a top ten of most awful films of recent years.On the DVD: Alongside the chapter selection facility, the various filmographies point to what a waste of potential talent this film is. With the picture quality unable to improve on the TV-movie feel of the whole project, the audio presents the horrible American rock backing in all its glory--despite that fact the music sequences are amongst the most laughingly unconvincing ever committed to celluloid. --Phil Udell
