  • Splash [1984]Splash | DVD | (14/10/2002) from £9.75   |  Saving you £6.24 (64.00%)   |  RRP £15.99

Splash was big news in 1984. It was the sole reason for a renewed Disney Studios forming its Touchstone Pictures subsidiary. This was so they could get away with displaying Daryl Hannah's nude bottom! It was also big news for launching the film career of Tom Hanks, who immediately became a massive box-office comedy draw in the 80s. For Ron Howard, it was the breakaway success that guaranteed he'd be able to pursue as diverse a directorial career path as he wanted to. It's a simple romance tale, spiced up by making the female lead a mermaid. The stroke of brilliance in the script was in making the comedy happen around the two leads, while letting them believably convey they are hopelessly lost in love. The comedy comes from the ever-reliable John Candy as a larger-than-life womanising older brother, and Eugene Levy as a scatty scientist. Although New York looks a little different today, the movie has hardly aged at all. Which is just as well since it boldly begins "This morning." On the DVD: Splash offers a transfer that has some defects, but colours and dark areas seem just about right. We're spoiled for extras, with a warmly nostalgic Howard joining a key production crew commentary in reminiscing on how much fun they had making the movie. There's a half-hour documentary ("Making a Splash") interviewing everyone involved, including some archival footage of the late Candy. Best of all are the original Audition Tapes for Hanks and Hannah, which reveal the consummate professionals these once-hungry stars really are. --Paul Tonks

39 Steps star Robert Donat takes a dual role as both the ghost of an 18th-century laird and his 20th-century descendant in this witty, delightfully whimsical romantic comedy. Co-starring Jean Parker and king-sized character actor Eugene Pallette, The Ghost Goes West combines the talents of the Kordas with the flair of French director Rene Clair (making his British directorial debut), and was Britain's biggest box-office hit for 1936. It is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited aspect ratio. Donald Glourie shares his crumbling ancestral home with the ghost of his Highland ancestor, Murdoch, who has been condemned to haunt the castle until he avenges a 200-year-old insult from a rival clan. To clear his mounting debts, Donald sells the dilapidated pile to an American businessman, Mr Martin, who has the castle complete with the Glourie ghost transported and rebuilt in Florida. While old-world gentility rubs up comically against 20th-century materialism, Martin's daughter takes a liking to both Donald and Murdoch, convinced they are one and the same man... Everybody important from the first film, including the writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, regroups for this sequel involving a pair of pregnancies. Steve Martin's patriarch has a crisis when his married daughter (Kimberly Williams) is with child, and an even bigger one when his middle-aged wife (Diane Keaton) announces that another bambino is on the way. Martin Short is more effectively used this time around (he played the wedding co-ordinator in the first film), and while this movie's inevitable climax has both women giving birth on the same chaotic night, the overall effect of the film is less contrived than its predecessor. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Dashing Errol Flynn is the definitive Robin in 1938's The Adventures of Robin Hood, the most gloriously swashbuckling version of the legendary story. Warner Brothers reunited Michael Curtiz, their top-action director, with the winning team of Flynn and Olivia de Havilland (Maid Marian) and perennial villain Basil Rathbone as the aristocratic Sir Guy of Gisbourne, and pulled out all stops for the production. It became their costliest film to date, a grandly handsome, glowing technicolour adventure set to a stirring, Oscar-winning score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold--music that became a template for countless later movies, notably John Williams' Star Wars and Indiana Jones scores. The decadent Prince John (a smoothly conniving Claude Rains) takes advantage of King Richard's absence to tax the country into poverty but meets his match in the medieval guerrilla rebel Robin Hood and his Merry Men of Sherwood Forest, who rise up and, to quote a cliché coined by the film, "steal from the rich and give to the poor". Stocky Alan Hale Sr plays Robin's loyal friend Little John (a part he played in Douglas Fairbanks' silent version), Eugene Palette plays the portly Friar Tuck and Melville Cooper is the bumbling Sheriff of Nottingham. Flynn's confidence and cocky charm makes for a perfect Robin and his easygoing manner is a marvellous counterpoint to Rathbone's regal bearing and courtly diction. The film climaxes in their rousing battle-to-the-finish sword fight, a magnificently choreographed scene highlighted by Curtiz's inventive use of shadows cast upon the castle walls. --Sean Axmaker

When a Man Loves a Woman is a dumb title (not another classic pop song, please) for a very smart movie. A kind of gender-switch take on The Lost Weekend, it's about a woman (Meg Ryan) whose alcoholism almost destroys her family. That may sound like just another TV movie, but When a Man Loves a Woman is so authentic in detail and emotion, that everything about it seems fresh, urgent, and engrossing. That's because the film is grounded in the actual experience of co-writer Al Franken (assisted by Rain Man scripter Ronald Bass). Franken is best known for his affiliation with Saturday Night Live and Politically Incorrect, and as the author of Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations. You may recall that Franken is the creator of Stuart Smalley, 12-step programmer extraordinaire. Well, if you want to know how Stuart was born, you can start here. This is no comedy, however. In fact, one of the most painful realisations comes when attractive, "good-time girl" Alice Green (Ryan) and her husband (Andy Garcia) begin to realise how much of a role alcohol played in their marriage and in bringing them together in the first place. The issues and experiences confronted in this movie go far beyond the stuff you see on daytime TV. --Jim Emerson

Beginning with the 1997 cult classic that rocked movie-goers and encouraged a new generation of thrill-seekers to avoid a backpacking trip to the wilds of Latin America, the ANACONDA series hits BluRay from 88 Films with each film restored in gloriously gory HD. For the original film, starring Oscar winner Jon Voight (MIDNIGHT COWBOY), pop sensation J-Lo, Ice Cube (THREE KINGS), Eric Stoltz (PULP FICTION) and Owen Wilson (ZOOLANDER), audiences were introduced to a group of hunted and helpless explorers who encounter a legendary giant reptile whilst sailing upstream in the legendary wilds of Colombia's epic rainforest. ANACONDA wrapped itself around audiences over two decades ago and is sure to slither its way into the hearts of horror buffs of a new generation. For ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID (2004), the veteran fear-filmmaker Dwight Little (HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS) gave audiences not just one giant carnivorous serpent but an entire gang of them! Adding even more fright to the formula, the sequel ups the stakes of survival - and was followed by ANACONDA 3: OFFSPRING (2008) in which cult legend David Hasselhoff (STARCRASH) attempts to avoid becoming a snake snack whilst discovering that scientific misdeeds has resulted in the creation of an inflated and very dangerous new forked-tongue antagonist. Finally comes ANACONDAS: TRAIL OF BLOOD (2009), headlined by the great John Rhys-Davis (LORD OF THE RINGS) and packing-in more squish and screams than ever before!! The snake is ready to strike... dare you chow down on this feast of slithery fear on BluRay? The writer-producer-director team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride) can't lift this sugary ode to Howard Hawks's His Girl Friday to a believable--let alone enjoyable--plateau. Neither, unfortunately, can its two great and perfectly cast leads, Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts. As competing newspaper reporters after the same story, there should be enough sparks and brilliantly barbed dialogue flying between them to resurrect the screwball comedy genre of classic Hollywood. But the material isn't there, the charisma isn't there, and the direction (by Shyer) certainly isn't there. At more than two hours, I Love Trouble begins to dismantle itself, and the cute factor becomes a pain. --Tom Keogh

With Dead Man, his first period piece, JIM JARMUSCH (Down by Law) imagined the nineteenth-century American West as an existential wasteland, delivering a surreal reckoning with the ravages of industrialization, the country's legacy of violence and prejudice, and the natural cycle of life and death.
