Eurotrash - Unzipped | DVD | (19/11/2001)
from £N/A

| RRP For people who like to snigger knowingly about sex and bodily functions, Eurotrash Unzipped is essential. It contains selections from all the seasons of Eurotrash, and a lot of material that was never shown because it was too gross, sexual or simply embarrassing--moments where the remorseless sexy teasing of host Antoine de Caunes just went a little too far. There is an entertaining featurette in which we are taken behind the scenes to the editing suite in which the voice-over staff decide precisely which irritating English accent to dub over the unfortunate French and German interviewees; this is a show that has always combined the view that foreigners are funny with the view that most British accents are funny as well. There is a memorial segment about the massive-breasted Lolo Ferrari, an odd exchange with Eddie Izzard about the danger of British breakfasts, trampolines and helicopters and the usual mixture of the grosser bits of the artistic avant-garde and the more pretentiously up-front sort of sex worker. It is business as usual--De Caunes, and occasionally Jean-Paul Gaultier, laughing at everyone, including themselves and the audience, for even bothering to talk about sex. On the DVD: The DVD, which is presented in Dolby Sound and a standard TV 4:3 ratio, also contains a photo gallery, some special-effects outtakes in which Antoine de Caunes performs more outrageous stunts than usual, Victoria Silvstedt saying sexy things in several languages, and (for computer DVD users) a feature which enables you to design your own garish Eurotrash set.--Roz Kaveney

This kickstarts a series of disastrous events that no-one, least of all Paul, could have anticipated. Without a private fortune to fall back on, Paul is forced to take a position as a teacher at a substandard boarding school in rural Wales. All too quickly it becomes apparent that Paul is not a natural disciplinarian. He finds scant comfort in drinking to excess with the other teachers. Things start to look up, however, when Paul meets Margot Beste-Chetwynde, a wealthy widow and a mother to one of the boys at the school. Could it be that the attraction Paul feels for Margot is returned? Could his fortunes be changing?

I Dreamed Of Africa | DVD | (05/02/2001)
from £15.18
| Saving you £4.81 (31.69%)
| RRP Based on the memoirs of party-girl-turned-conservationist Kuki Gallman, I Dreamed of Africa never comes close to living up to its title; the mood is more prosaic travelogue than oneiric wonderment. After a car accident warns Kuki of her mortality, she resolves to grow up, a process that mysteriously involves marrying a man she barely knows and moving with him and her young son to the wilds of South Africa. There she learns new beau Paolo is less reliable than she thought, but also that the sun-baked plains and roaming beasts of Africa speak to her in a way the nightlife of Italy did not. (We learn of her blossoming humanity because she introduces herself to the servants; a probing study of interpersonal relationships this isn't.) Kim Basinger obviously feels connected to the role--she can stride across a room with a majestic self-righteousness that the film should have drawn upon more--but she's defeated by a script composed of repetitive vignettes that have no cumulative effect and a director (Hugh Hudson) who keeps the film's emotional impact curiously flat and diffuse except for the crass, manipulative moments every 20 minutes or so. Sure the photography's lovely, but really, how hard is it to get a nice shot of flamingoes at dawn? --Bruce Reid, Amazon.com

Gigi | DVD | (02/06/2003)
from £7.55
| Saving you £6.44 (85.30%)
| RRP Gigi, Vincente Minnelli's 1958 adaptation of Colette's story about a girl (Leslie Caron) groomed as a courtesan but desired as a wife by a Parisian playboy (Louis Jordan), won a lot of Oscars, but it also has the unusual distinction of being an MGM musical shot on location in the City of Lights. What a musical it is (by Lerner and Loewe): Maurice Chevalier and Hermione Gingold crooning "Ah, Yes, I Remember It Well", plus the songs "Thank Heaven for Little Girls", "Gigi", "I'm a Bore", and "She's Not Thinking of Me". Director Minnelli makes a sumptuous, dreamy, almost laid-back affair of it all and the indispensable cast is forever etched into memory. Hollywood's long-running infatuation with continental grace and manners, the memory of a much earlier time imported to American movies through such immigrant directors as Ernst Lubitsch, may have finally come to a gentle end with this film. --Tom Keogh

His unique and beautifully realised works set him apart from all other contemporary filmmakers, creating an intoxicating body of work that is unlike any other in modern cinema. This Limited Edition three-disc Blu-ray Box Set includes his two feature film masterpieces Szindad (1971) and Csontvary (1979), a selection of his acclaimed short works, and an array of new and archival special features - plus individual booklets with writing on the films.Disc 1: Szindbad (1971): Considered a great lost masterpiece' of international cinema, Szindbad was chosen by Hungarian writers and filmmakers as one of the three best Hungarian films of all time. Based on the stories of surrealist writer Gyula Krúdy, this erotic elegy is a lush and sensuous depiction of the life, loves and memories of hedonist and serial seducer Szindbad (Zoltan Latinovits). Disc 2: Csontvary (1979) Huszarik's second - and final - feature is a complex and alluring portrait of artist Tivadar Csontvary Kosztka. Regarded as Hungary's greatest painter, Csontvary was driven to madness by his passionate desire to express the beauty and perfection of what he saw as God's creation on canvas. At once lyrical and surreal, the film is a vivid expression of the artists' impulse to create - and their proclivity to destroy. Disc 3: Short films (1963 - 1976) A selection of Zoltan Huszarik's renowned short works, including his most famous film poem, Elegy (Elégia, 1965), a veneration of the horse and their service to mankind.
