  Originally made for television, Blood Crime is a standard thriller with a better-than-usual plot. Seattle detective Daniel Pruitt (Jonathan Schaech) goes out to the country with his wife Jessica (Elizabeth Lackey, Mulholland Drive), who is brutally attacked; hysterical, she accuses an innocent man, whom Pruitt beats severely. But when he finally contacts the local sheriff (James Caan) the beaten man turns up dead and turns out to be the sheriff's son. Now Pruitt has to find the real murderer before the evidence starts pointing to him. The script isn't subtle, and as a larger mystery unfolds, some elements of Blood Crime are a little too convenient--but the tension between Pruitt and the sheriff remains surprisingly taut, the story zips along, and--for the genre--the character motivations are unusually plausible. --Bret Fetzer

  There's schlock-horror movie-making par excellence from producer Dick Randall in this Something Weird Collection 1 twofer. Meat Is Meat (1971) finds mad butcher Otto Lehman back in the Viennese community doing what he does best. With its Sweeney Todd overtones this is not for the faint of stomach, but those who enjoy seeing nagging wives and creepy sidekicks transformed into sausages will lap up accordingly. Victor Buono is perfect casting as Lehman, with Brad Harris stylish as the bored American journalist who rumbles his activities and Karen Field looking good as the housekeeper next door. Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks (1973) is less OTT than the title suggests. Rossano Brazzi (earlier of South Pacific!) is a thoughtful Count Frankenstein, while Michael Dunn is seriously unlikable as necrophile dwarf Genz. As anthropologist-cum-sex kitten Krista, Christiane Royce brings a welcome sophistication to this gloss on the hoary Karloff classic, whose opening "location" sequence and standard of dubbing has to be seen to be believed. On the DVD: The Something Weird Collection 1 DVD presentation is of the no-frills variety usual with Siren releases. With decent remastering at 1.33:1 aspect ratio the lurid colour of both films comes through unadulterated. An added attraction is the poster gallery of low-budget shockers with mildly psychedelic soundtrack to boot. It's good, if not so clean fun for all the family. --Richard Whitehouse

  The prolific and manic Jess Franco has directed well over 200 films. Some are dire the majority functional and a few are absolute classics of exploitation cinema. The Demons Franco's shameless cash in on Ken Russell's the Devils is a true Franco masterpiece featuring everything from torture lesbian sex and demonic possession. The film centres on a witch who is burned at the stake by the inquisition but who before the flames consume her manages to curse the principal witchfinder and his minions with dire results. What follows is a catalogue of depravity and sexual violence on a truly orgiastic scale while Franco's camera gleefully captures every perverse moment and gratuitous exposure of female flesh!

Beautiful Carole Lombard and likeable James Stewart are Jane and John Mason, a couple who meet, fall madly in love, marry and quickly have a baby. But while they--and the audience--are confident that they are meant for each other, life intercedes and the couple must meet with disapproving in-laws, job stress, financial challenges and, finally, a devastating illness.Lombard and Stewart--and the genuinely good people they portray--are utterly compelling and charming. Say yawningly what you will about tradition but the Masons' path is one that many, if not most, go down. And unlike the wonderful but wholly fantasy world of peer Preston Sturges, director John Cromwell's universe is, like real life, full of ups and downs. It's an accessible, sensitive portrayal. He gives the audience characters they want to see succeed, and to see stay together in the process. It may be a tale of triumph of the human spirit but its ultimate sentiment--one that celebrates the kindness of strangers--is thoroughly sweet, though in no way saccharine.
