Based on William Wharton's transcendent novel of the same name, this film is about many things: friendship, war, and, of course, birds. The framing device is an effort by a horribly scarred combat soldier (Nicolas Cage) to break through to his best friend, Birdy (Matthew Modine), hospitalised after seemingly being driven mad by fighting in the Vietnam War. Cage then flashes back to their boyhood, where Birdy, a canary aficionado, was considered the school weirdo but managed to be a solid companion none the less. Directed by Alan Parker, it works best as a coming-of-age story, but misses the bizarre psychological transferences of the book, in which Birdy imagines himself within the world of canaries he creates in his bedroom at his parents' house. Modine is fine as an out-of-it misfit enraptured by his own little universe. --Marshall Fine
A key film of the British New Wave 'Saturday Night And Sunday Morning' was a great box-office success - audiences were thrilled by its anti-establishment energy the gritty realism of its setting and most of all by a working-class hero of a fresh and outspoken kind. Based on Alan Sillitoe's largely autobiographical novel the film is set in the grim industrial streets and factories of Nottingham where Arthur Seaton spends his days at a factory bench his Saturday evenings in the local pubs and his Saturday nights with Brenda (Rachel Roberts) wife of a fellow factory worker. Played by Albert Finney with an irresistable animal vitality Arthur is anti-authority (Don't let the bastards grind you down) and unashamedly amoral (What I'm out for is a good time. All the rest is propoganda). With powerful central performances cracking dialogue by Sillitoe and a superb jazz score by Johnny Dankworth 'Saturday Night And Sunday Morning' still stands as a vibrant modern classic.

Say it with FlowersThis 1934 Real Art production was made at Twickenham Film Studios. Directed by John Baxter, this was one of his earliest works. He was already showing his deft hand at understanding the working people, the sequence along a row of market traders was years ahead of its time. The story revolves around market flower sellers Kate Bishop (Mary Clare) and husband Joe Bishop (Ben Field) who fall on hard times and fellow traders decide to put on a benefit concert for them. Stars of the concert are Charles Coborn, (The Man That Broke The Bank Of Monte Carlo), Florrie Forde (Has Anyone Seen Kelly) and Marie Kendall, Grandmother of Kay Kendall. Enjoy this wonderfull slice of history. Picture and sound of excellent quality.Song of the RoadAnother classic from John Baxter who directed this 1937 UK film production.
