  • The Audrey Hepburn Story [DVD]The Audrey Hepburn Story | DVD | (25/10/2010) from £13.48   |  Saving you £-3.49 (-34.90%)   |  RRP £9.99

Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party Of Five I Know What You Did Last Summer) as Audrey Hepburn and featuring Frances Fisher (Titanic) as her mother this miniseries reveals the dramatic life lead by this most appealing of performers - her childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation her meteoric rise to stardom on Broadway and in films her doomed love affair with William Holden her troubled marriage to Mel Ferrer and her life long search for her father a collaborator during the War. Concealed behind the dazzling smile of Audrey Hepburn was a woman who had known great difficulties and overcame them to become the top international film star in the world an Academy Award winning actress and a fashion designer's dream. Her every change of hair-style was copied by young women all over the world. Featured in the series are her teenage years during the war in which deprivation and hunger forged her determination to survive and her work with the Resistance almost cost her life. After the war she and her mother fled to London where Audrey supported them dancing in revues until she was spotted by the famous French author Collette who personally chose her to play Gigi on Broadway in which she became an overnight sensation. She then went on to star in such films as Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck (for which she won an Academy Award) Sabrina with Humphrey Bogart and William Holden who would become her lover Funny Face with Fred Astaire and perhaps her crowning role Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's where she clashed with its author Truman Capote. Her affair with the womanizing star William Holden was threatening to her new success but he was perhaps the great love of her life and their break up drove her into the arms of Mel Ferrer who was to become her first husband. As his own career was on the wane Audrey's was spiraling ever upward and Ferrer devoted himself to being her protector and sometimes jailer. He did fulfil her long dream of having a child but the marriage eventually terminated. Her role as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's best described Audrey's own life; a lost beauty looking for love in the arms of the protector/father she never had known.

A detective drama that doesn't follow the script. Suspects is a fresh and original British procedural crime drama, set in London, that tackles difficult subjects in a gritty and real way. Shot like a fly-on-the-wall documentary, this innovative new series is unscripted with the cast devising their own dialogue, lending Suspects a unique sense of authenticity. It's as though the crew has been granted the privilege of following a real police investigation. Starring Fay Ripley as DI Martha Bellamy (Cold Feet), Damien Molony as DS Jack Weston (Being Human, Ripper Street) and Clare-Hope Ashitey as DC Charlie Steele (Children of Men, Top Boy) as East London CID officers, each episode follows a different case from the committing of the crime to its conclusion. In this 3-disc set containing all the 9 episodes of Series 1 & 2, Bellamy and her team investigate crimes that are hard-hitting and contemporary, ranging from the hunt for a serial rapist, a brutal hammer assault on a man in his own home to the abduction of a young boy by a paedophile ring. With guest stars including Charlie Brooks (EastEnders), Dominic Powers (Emmerdale), Gillian Kearney (Casualty) and Larissa Wilson (Skins), Suspects is immersive and absorbing, taking the viewer into exhilarating new territory.

  • A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge [1985]A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge | DVD | (25/06/2001) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-0.01 (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge was a quick follow-up no one was exactly happy with. However this deserves some credit for trying to extend rather than repeat the original storyline. As opposed to the resourceful heroines of all the other Elm Street films, this is the one about the troubled male teenager worried that Freddy is out to possess his body and make his way back to reality. It's shot through with a heavy handed gay subtext, with male bodies ogled and sliced (for a change), stuck with a few truly ridiculous moments (the exploding budgie) and lapses into incoherence, but it opens with a great school bus sequence and makes the most of the infernal boiler room of Freddy's soul. With Clu Gulager and Hope Lange. Directed by Jack Sholder (The Hidden). -- Kim Newman

  • The Man In The White Suit [1951]The Man In The White Suit | DVD | (21/06/2004) from £6.47   |  Saving you £7.52 (116.23%)   |  RRP £13.99

Ealing Comedy--cosy, gentle and whimsical, right? In this case, think again. Alexander Mackendrick was always the most politically aware of the Ealing directors, and in The Man in the White Suit he takes the studio's favourite theme of the little man up against the system and gives it a sharp satirical twist. Sidney Stratton (Alec Guinness at his most unworldly), a maverick scientist working in a Northern textile mill, invents a fabric that never gets dirty and never wears out. He's hailed as a genius--until management and unions alike realise what his brainwave implies. Mackendrick's humour is exact and pointed, and the satire turns savage as a lynch mob of bosses and workers hunt Sidney down through dark narrow streets. Mackendrick's disenchanted view of hidebound, class-ridden British society still rings horribly true, and he draws note-perfect performances from the cream of British character actors: Cecil Parker as the liberal mill-owner (based it's said, on Ealing boss Michael Balcon); Ernest Thesiger as the evil old godfather of the industry; and, wittily sensual as Sidney's confidante, the ever-wonderful Joan Greenwood. Plus, listen out for the "voice" of Sidney's bizarre apparatus, the funniest and most unforgettable sound effect ever devised. --Philip Kemp
