Filmed over four years, Personal Best follows up-and-coming British sprinters on their journey from the grassroots of athletics to the international stage. The film is both a gripping portrait of the athletes in training and competition, and a deeply personal account of their lives unfolding - revealing victory, defeat, agony, ecstasy and the simple trials of growing up. On the eve of the 2012 Olympics, this film tells the stories of Britain's young sprinters as they strive towards their dreams. This is an inspiring but genuine portrait of Britain's youth and a penetrating study of the art of sprinting, peeling back the layers so we can finally understand everything it means to them as they wait on the start line for the gun to fire.

Sultan of Sexploitation. King of Camp. Just a few names given to the legendary film-maker of cinema's greatest schlock movies. Producing a slew of entertainingly trashy exploitation flicks throughout the 60s and 70s, Novak ran the gamut from sexy soft-core smut to sleazy grindhouse thrillers. If you’re a fan of cutie nudie style cinema (be honest, who isn't?) check out Volume One and discover what Harry Novak is all about. Mantis In Lace (Lila) A psychedelic psycho classic! Lila (Susan Stewaki) is a go-go dancer who gets a charge out of turning guys on. Events take a crazy twist after she is introduced to a cocktail of LSD and Methadrine by hippie-stud Tiger. Tripping her brains out to flashing colours and imaginary attacking bananas, Lila takes a meat cleaver to Tiger, hacking him to pieces. This is just the beginning of what may be the only film ever made to link homicidal maniac with soft foods! In between hackings, Lila continues dancing at the club, flashing her cute little drug soaked boobs, and flipping out on acid flashbacks. Looks like she's on a baaaaaad trip! The Secret Sex Lives of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare's romantic tragedy receives the Novak makeover, injecting lust-filled laugh-in style gags into its steamy sex scenes. The setting is the famous Globe Theatre in Old London, where the Bard's play is performed to match the spirit of ribald time it portrayed. Busty redheads perform mock fellatio and naked flesh flies thick and fast as the title characters profess their love (and lust) for each other and anyone else. If only all Shakespeare was like this! Kiss Me Quick A heady mix of monsters and mammaries! Novak’s first feature film from 1964 kick-started his prolific career in the adult entertainment industry. Sterilox, an alien with an uncanny resemblance to Stan Laurel, is sent to Earth to find the perfect female specimen. Hooking up with mad scientist Dr Breedlove, they develop a potion that transforms three busty babes into gyrating topless go-go dancers. Dance, you little sex bombs! Whirl you little dervishes! • The Black Sabbath Story - Vol. 2 - 1978-1992The Black Sabbath Story - Vol. 2 - 1978-1992 | DVD | (26/08/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

This second instalment in The Black Sabbath Story covers the period between 1978 and 1992. These were the wilderness years after founding vocalist Ozzy Osbourne left the group and it often seemed as though Sabbath had fitted their tour bus with a revolving door--by 1986, guitarist Tony Iommi was the only founder member left in the group. Five different vocalists are featured in this programme: Ronnie James Dio (ex-Rainbow), Ian Gillan (ex-Deep Purple), Glenn Hughes, Geoff Nicholls and Tony Martin. The nine promo videos collected here are representatives of an era that all but the most die-hard of Sabbath fans have tried to forget. It is an ignominy that is richly merited. The kindest thing that can be said of this collection of awful 80s hair-metal soundtracking dreadful black-and-white videos of men with haircuts that not even German football players would be caught dead with is that it's an interesting period piece. On the DVD: The Black Sabbath Story is presented in widescreen. Sound is available in Dolby 5.1 Surround or Dolby Digital. The menu of extras is badly laid out, but includes a gallery of Sabbath albums and further interviews with band members--including an extraordinary and hilarious reminiscence from Ian Gillan, which confirms that that Black Sabbath's reality was far more preposterous than any of the satirical conceits offered by This Is Spinal Tap.--Andrew Mueller

  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 7 [DVD] [2017]Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 7 | DVD | (18/09/2017) from £11.49   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

The seventh and final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer begins with a mystery: someone is murdering teenage girls all over the world and something is trying hard to drive Spike mad. Buffy is considerably more cheerful in these episodes than we have seen her during the previous year as she trains Dawn and gets a job as student counselor at the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High. Willow is recovering from the magical addiction which almost led her to destroy the world, but all is not yet well with her, or with Anya, who has returned to being a Vengeance demon in "Same Time, Same Place" and "Selfless," and both women are haunted by their decisions. Haunting of a different kind comes in the excellent "Conversations with Dead People" (one of the show's most terrifying episodes ever), in which a mysterious song is making Spike kill again in spite of his soul and his chip. Giles turns up in "Bring on the Night" and Buffy has to fight one of the deadliest vampires of her career in "Showtime". In "Potential" Dawn faces a fundamental reassessment of her purpose in life. Buffy was always a show about female empowerment, but it was also a show about how ordinary people can decide to make a difference alongside people who are special. And it was also a show about people making up for past errors and crimes. So, for example, we have the excellent episodes "Storyteller", in which the former geek/supervillain Andrew sorts out his redemption while making a video diary about life with Buffy; and "Lies My Parents Told Me," in which we find out why a particular folk song sends Spike crazy. Redemption abounds as Faith returns to Sunnydale and the friends she once betrayed, and Willow finds herself turning into the man she flayed. Above all, this was always Buffy's show: Sarah Michelle Gellar does extraordinary work here both as Buffy and as her ultimate shadow, the First Evil, who takes her face to mock her. This is a fine ending to one of television's most remarkable shows. --Roz Kaveney

The Remains of the Day is one of Merchant-Ivory's most thought-provoking films. Anthony Hopkins is a model of restraint and propriety as Stevens, the butler who "knows his place"; Emma Thompson is the animated and sympathetic Miss Kenton, the housekeeper whose attraction to Stevens is doomed to disappointment. As Nazi appeaser Lord Darlington, James Fox clings to the notion of a gentleman's agreement in the ruthless political climate before World War Two. Hugh Grant is his journalist nephew all too aware of reality, while Christopher Reeves gives a spirited portrayal of an American senator, whose purchase of Darlington Hall 20 years on sends Stevens on a journey to right the mistake he made out of loyalty. As a period drama with an ever-relevant message, this 1993 film is absorbing viewing all the way. On the DVD: the letterbox widescreen format reproduces the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with absolute clarity. Subtitles are in French and German, with audio subtitles also in English, Italian and Spanish, and with 28 separate chapter selections. The "making-of" featurette and retrospective documentary complement each other with their "during and after" perspectives, while "Blind Loyalty, Hollow Honour" is an interesting short on the question of appeasement and war. The running commentary from Thompson, Merchant and Ivory is more of a once-only diversion. --Richard Whitehouse

Season 1: When the first series of Friends debuted in September 1994, it was immediately obvious there would be no need for the show to find its feet. "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" was a confident introduction to the six lead characters, opening in the middle of an everyday conversation with the soon-to-be uncharacteristic line: "There's nothing to tell". In fact, the soap opera-style plot got complicated pretty quickly, with spoiled brat Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) moving on from her failed wedding to feelings toward nerdy/heartthrob Ross (David Schwimmer). However, no love life was more complicated than Joey's (Matt LeBlanc), with an endless stream of girlfriends that annoyed the hell out of wisecracking roommate Chandler (Matthew Perry), who only seemed to be able to connect with Janice (Maggie Wheeler), the shrillest voice in the city. Bouncing all manner of neuroses around them were Ross' obsessive sister Monica (Courteney Cox) and endearingly ditzy Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). Premise established, Series 1 matured the characters by providing a monkey and a son for Ross. We met also meet Ross and Monica's parents Jack (Elliott Gould) and Judy (Christina Pickles), Chandler's mother (Morgan Fairchild) and Phoebe's twin sister Ursula (Kudrow, naturally). Fans loved cameos from George Clooney, Jay Leno and show creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. But really the focus was on building to "T.O.W. Rachel Finds Out" that Ross is in love with her. --Paul Tonks
