From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits of The Little Mermaid in 1989 it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured a "magic" that had been dormant for 30 years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand", Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull and a flounder. The lyrics and music by song-writing team Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering 1991's Beauty and the Beast into cinemas. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid) is a talented young psychic who is frittering his gifts away betting on the ponies. That is, until he's coerced by his old pal and mentor Dr Paul Novotny (Max von Sydow) into taking part in a dream research project in which his psychic abilities make him indispensable. The project concerns "dreamlinking", whereby talented individuals like Alex hook up via electrodes and project themselves into some troubled subject's nightmares, in which they not only observe but participate in the dream, hopefully effecting some remedy. Alex is by nature a feckless guy, a charismatic scoundrel sporting a Cheshire cat's grin. But he warms easily to his new role as dream-dwelling psychotherapist, having a core of decency. Not so his nemesis, Tommy Ray Glatman (David Patrick Kelly), a dreamlink prodigy and pawn of Bob Blair (Christopher Plummer), who runs the research project for the government (he's described as the "head of covert intelligence"). Blair is worried about the President (Eddie Albert), whose nightmares of nuclear holocaust cause him to escalate disarmament talks with the Russians, much to Blair's dismay, being your basic evil, slick, smarmy covert kind of guy. Turns out Blair's real aim is to use the project to train dreamlink assassins, his star pupil being psycho Tommy Ray and his test case the President. Only Alex is there to stop them.Dreamscape is all business, with a well-structured screenplay that lays the groundwork for the film's many admirable performances. Kate Capshaw in particular is very dreamy as a research scientist and Dennis Quaid's love interest. And David Patrick Kelly is likely to become your worst nightmare, especially when he's the Snakeman, giving an often fantastical performance. But what you are most likely to remember from this wonderful thriller is the many vivid dream sequences, aptly surreal images from the troubled psyche. --Jim Gay

Titles Comprise: Layer Cake: Matthew Vaughn, the producer of 'Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels' and 'Snatch', steps into the director's chair for the first time with 'Layer Cake'. Based upon JJ Connelly's London crime novel, 'Layer Cake' is about a successful cocaine dealer (Daniel Craig) who has earned a respected place among England's Mafia elite and plans an early retirement from the business. However, big boss Jimmy Price (Cranham) hands down a tough assignment: find Charlotte Ryder, the missing rich princess daughter of Jimmy's old pal Edward (Gambon), a powerful construction business player and gossip papers socialite. Complicating matters are two million pounds' worth of Grade A ecstasy, a brutal neo-Nazi sect and a whole series of double crossings...The title 'Layer Cake' refers to the layers or levels the dealer has to go through as he painstakingly plots his own escape. What is revealed is a modern underworld where the rules have changed. There are no 'codes' or 'families' and respect lasts as long as a line. Not knowing who he can trust, he has to use all his 'savvy', 'telling' and skills which make him one of the best, to escape his own. The ultimate last job, a love interest called Tammy and an international drugs ring, threaten to draw him back into the 'cake mix'. But, time is running out and the penalty will endure a lifetime.. Snatch: Guy Ritchie, writer/director of 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' delivers another awe-inspiring directorial masterpiece. 'Snatch' is an edgy and hilarious film about a diamond heist gone wrong, a colourful Irish gypsy turned prizefighter, and a very temperamental dog. In the heart of gangland, two novice unlicensed boxing promoters, Turkish (Jason Statham) and Tommy (Stephen Graham) get roped into organising a bare-knuckled fight with local kingpin villain and fellow boxing promoter Brick Top (Alan Ford). But it all goes wrong when Brick Top's fighter, who is rigged to win, is suddenly knocked out by the boys' wildcard Irish gypsy boxer, One Punch Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt). Unfortunately things go from bad to worse as Mickey starts playing by his own rules and the duo find they are heading for a whole lot of trouble. Meanwhile en route to New York to deliver a stolen 84-carat diamond to head honcho Avi (Dennis Farina), Franky Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro) is robbed of the stone. Forced to jump on the next plane to London, Avi is by no means pleased. He hires local legend Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) to find Franky and the diamond. The hunt for the missing stone launches everyone into a spiral of double-crossing vendettas as different parties pursue personal agendas, some of them farcical, most of them illegal and all of them destined to spin completely out of control...

  • Resident Evil: Retribution [Blu-ray] [2012] [Region Free]Resident Evil: Retribution | Blu Ray | (24/02/2014) from £19.99   |  Saving you £5.00 (25.01%)   |  RRP £24.99

The fifth chapter in the Resident Evil cinematic franchise again sees Milla Jovovich as Alice, who once more is armed and dangerous. She needs to be too, given the numerous zombie monsters who are after her. Working equally well as a standalone movie, Resident Evil: Retribution nonetheless picks up directly after the events of Resident Evil: Afterlife. It also brings back characters from previous movies, as well as introducing some new faces, but it's when the action is ramped up that the film sparks heavily into life. Few would declare that any of the Resident Evil movies have anything of note to add to the history of cinema, but they've all succeeded, to varying degrees, in entertaining. Retribution survives some major wobbles to do so too. It's best not to focus too much on the narrative, rather to sit back and enjoy the moments where the screen bursts to life. This is where the 3D Blu-ray comes into its own, too. Not just for the super-sharp picture quality, but also the fact that there's been a real effort to get something out of the 3D work in the film, and it's really very effective. Still, Milla Jovavich remains the key reason to watch Resident Evil: Retribution. She comfortably holds everything together, and remains an action cinema lead of some quality. Her Alice remains a character very much not to be trifled with, and the latest chapter shows that her screen adventures are still worth checking out. --Jon Foster
