When Neil Jordan is really on his game, as he is with The Good Thief, his directorial skill is a marvel to behold. In the character-driven mode of Jordan's Mona Lisa and The Crying Game, this smooth, underrated caper provides an abundance of cinematic riches, not the least being Jordan's peerless knack for dialogue and a tailor-made role for Nick Nolte. For better or worse, Nolte's off-screen drug abuse served him well in portraying Bob Montagnet, ace thief, recovering heroin addict, and beloved denizen of the French Riviera, where his luck is about to take some very clever turns. The elegant plot is yours to discover; in loosely remaking the French classic Bob le Flambeur, Jordan crafts what one reviewer aptly called "the underbelly of Ocean's Eleven", involving an impenetrable vault full of priceless art, a rescued Russian prostitute, an eccentric band of accomplices and high-stakes poker in Monte Carlo. Nolte is right at home in this rich-and-risky milieu and the combined talents of Jordan and ace cinematographer Chris Menges make The Good Thief a pleasure from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) is the voice of reason in the midst of a blue-blood clan of crazies who have become acclimated to the life of luxury after patriarch George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor) earned a fortune in the tract-housing business. When George is arrested on charges of tax fraud, however, the family's assets are frozen, and the resulting life of relative poverty proves difficult in many unexpected ways. Matriarch Lucille (Jessica Walter) is an emotionally stunted alcoholic. The Bluth siblings include Lindsay (Portia de Rossi), a socialite whose multitude of causes serves to further her own social career; Gob (Will Arnett), a womanising illusionist; and Buster, a mama's boy who spends his time pursuing a nebulous career as a student. Lindsay is married to Tobias (David Cross), an out-of-work actor and former doctor whose sexuality remains undefined. Michael, in addition to tending to the foibles of his siblings, spends much of his time trying to be a good dad to his earnest 14-year-old son, George Michael (Michael Cera). • Hancock [Blu-ray] [2008]Hancock | Blu Ray | (23/05/2016) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

Hancock turns the standard superhero movie inside-out. The titular character, played by Will Smith, can fly, has super strength and is invulnerable. But he's also a sloppy, arrogant alcoholic who causes millions of dollars in property damage whenever he bothers to fight crime. When he saves the life of a PR agent named Ray (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development), Ray decides to improve Hancock's image--starting by having Hancock surrender himself to the authorities and go to prison for his lawless behaviour. The idea is that once he's in prison, the crime rate will go up and people will start realising Hancock might be of value after all. This is only the first act of Hancock though--from there, the film takes several surprising turns that shouldn't be revealed. Hancock isn't a great movie, but it is an extremely entertaining one. The script, which holds together far better than most superhero movies, has a propulsive plot, good dialogue, some compassion for its characters, and even an actual idea or two. The spectacular action at least gestures towards obeying the laws of physics, which actually makes the special effects more vivid. The three leads (Smith, Bateman, and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife, Mary) deftly balance the movie's mixture of comedy, action, and drama. All in all, a smart subversive twist on a genre that all too often takes itself all too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

  • Sex and the City: Series 3Sex and the City: Series 3 | DVD | (18/11/2002) from £6.30   |  Saving you £31.68 (957.10%)   |  RRP £34.99

The Sex and the City phenomenon continues in Series 3 of this outrageously addictive cult show. The four highly sexed thirtysomethings share their hopes, fears and even boyfriends (when Charlotte decides to throw a "used boyfriend party") in a New York where you can buy Manolo Blahniks on the proceeds of one article a week and eat mountains of junk food yet stay as thin as a pencil. But if the peripheral details remain somewhat fantastical, the searing honesty of the main storyline takes this third season to dramatic heights only suggested by the previous seasons. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) falls head-over-heels for chunky furniture designer Aidan Joff (John Corbett) but still embarks on a disastrous affair with her newlywed ex, Mr Big (Chris Noth). The resulting triangle, set against the background of Charlotte's outwardly perfect marriage to Trey (Kyle MacLachlan), proves to be electrifying viewing. But the humour is as sharp as ever too: Samantha's run-in with her drag-queen prostitute neighbours, Miranda pretending to be an air stewardess so as not to frighten men away and one of Charlotte's boyfriends talking dirty to her in bed are all moments of great high comedy. It just gets better and better. --Warwick Thompson

  • Teachers: Series 1 [2001]Teachers: Series 1 | DVD | (11/08/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Depending on where you get your recommendations, you'll see Teachers described as a comedy, a drama, an irresponsible depiction of the teaching profession and a (fairly) sympathetic reminder of how teachers are expected to be morally unimpeachable despite being ordinary human beings like the rest of us. In fact, it's all of the above, which perhaps does more for the show's realism than all its supposedly controversial elements put together. The series stars Andrew (This Life) Lincoln as the feckless Simon, who, like several of his colleagues, is no more mature or advanced in terms of his ability to manage his own life than his pupils. The staff at the fictitious Bristol school are given to in-fighting, petty factionalism, bad behaviour, inappropriate nookie and dishonesty, both on and off-duty. That said, they also have to wrestle with professional and moral dilemmas and deal with their dysfunctional relationships: sometimes they succeed, often they don't. It makes for a superb, bittersweet concoction. If you want yet more social comment, it's worth noting that the series was filmed in a disused, empty LEA school. On the DVD: Teachers, Series 1 bucks the take-it-or-leave-it convention of many television series releases by actually providing some interview material as part of this two-disc set. Simple extras such as this cost little enough to include and do at least add some value to the package. --Roger Thomas
