| RRP Titles Comprise: A Farewell To Arms (Dir. Charles Vidor) (1957): This dense adaption of Ernest Hemingway's novel features Rock Hudson as American soldier Lt. Henry and his ill-fated love affair with British Nurse Catherine portrayed by Jennifer Jones during World War I. The two lovers will stop at nothing to be together but Lt. Henry's internal struggles ultimately threaten the relationship. Hemingway's theme of questioning the nature of war and fighting is fully recognised under Charles Vidor's direction. Hemingway's Adventures Of A Young Man (Dir. Martin Ritt) (1962): Nick Adams leaves his rural Michigan home to embark on an eventful cross-country journey. He is touched and affected by his encounters with a punch-drunk ex-boxer a sympathetic telegrapher and an alcoholic advanceman for a burlesque show. After failing to get a job as reporter in New York he enlists in the Italian army during World War I as an ambulance driver. His camaraderie with fellow soldiers and a romance with a nurse he meets after being wounded propel him to manhood. The Snow Of Kilimanjaro (Dir. Henry King) (1952): Based on the Ernest Hemigway novel of the same name Peck plays the part of a wounded hunter who is accompanied by two young women in the African wilds. Each of them tries to analyse his or her past life. Under My Skin (Jean Negulesco) (1950): After expatriate American jockey Danny Arnold double-crosses ruthless gambler Louis Bork he flees Italy with his adoring son Joe who isn't aware of his father's lies and corruption. While in France he begins a relationship with a beautiful French nightclub singer and buys a problematic racehorse that no one seems to be able to train. After Joe suggests that the horse has a future as a jumper Danny converts him to the steeplechase and turns him into a consistent winner. When Bork shows up and tells him he must lose the big race or die Danny must weigh his life against his son's faith that he has become a man of honor.

| RRP Combining elegance and wit Lubitsch's last film set in 1938 London is one of the most engaging romantic comedies. Jennifer Jones and Charles Boyer are well teamed as the plumber's niece (later housemaid) and the intellectual Czech refugee who throw English society into disarray with their disregard for conventions. This charming satire aided by a wonderful script taking in snobbery upstairs downstairs and in the middle classes is given a jolly run around by a cast comprising most of Hollywood's British stalwarts from Sir C Aubrey Smith and Peter Lawford to Sara Allgood and Una O'Connor.

| RRP The first episode on this volume of Friends Series 8 is classic silliness. "The One With the Cooking Class" has Monica joining a class after getting a bad review of her restaurant. Meantime Chandler foolishly allows Phoebe to give him advice on job interview technique. Time starts to tick faster for everyone in "The One Where Rachel is Late". Joey's WWI movie finally arrives, but is overshadowed by the wait for Rachel's overdue arrival. Naturally it's all build-up to the cliffhanger fans wait for every year. The two-part "The One Where Rachel Has a Baby" gave the millions of fans exactly what they wanted. While Janice manages to complicate the gang's general feelings, Monica and Chandler wrestle with their own concern with becoming parents. Joey makes up his mind over how to deal with his feelings for Rachel, but wouldn't you know it, it seems there might be dormant sparks between her and Ross after all. Surely their break should be over by now! --Paul Tonks

| RRP The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. Entry-level filmmaking, but with surprisingly professional head-squashing effects and a degree of enthusiasm that breaks down most resistance. Several sequels have ensued, including The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. -- Kim Newman

| RRP Spider-Man (Dir. Sam Raimi 2002): Peter Parker (Maguire) was a shy quite nerdy teenager...until he was bitten by a genetically altered spider. Now with the heightened senses and incredible strengths and abilities of a spider Parker has become the amazing Spider-Man! Hellboy (Dir. Guillermo del Toro 2004): In the final days of World War II the Nazis attempt to use black magic to aid their dying cause. The Allies raid the camp where an occult ceremony is taking place but not before a demon Hellboy has already been conjured. Joining the Allied forces Hellboy (Perlman) eventually grows to adulthood under the supervision of his adopted 'father' Trevor Bruttenholm (Hurt) serving the cause of good rather than evil. When the powerful and evil Nazi figure who unleashed Hellboy suddenly reappears in modern times he discovers that Hellboy is now working as a paranormal investigator at a secret U.S. government agency dedicated to protecting humanity from the forces of darkness. Now Hellboy must fight to prevent the destruction of mankind... Dark Horse Comic's popular cult superhero Hellboy makes the leap from the comic book pages to the big screen with Ron Perlman the only actor considered charismatic enough to carry the role of the blood-red demon cutting a cigar-chomping dash aided by the prosthetic work of 6-time Oscar winning make-up artist Rick Baker. The Hulk (Dir. Ang Lee 2003): Scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) has to put it mildly anger management issues. His quiet life as a brilliant researcher working with cutting edge genetic technology conceals a nearly forgotten and painful past. His ex-girlfriend and equally brilliant fellow researcher Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly) has tired of Bruce's cordoned off emotional terrain and resigns herself to remaining an interested onlooker to his quiet life. Which is exactly where Betty finds herself during one of the early trials in Banner's groundbreaking research. A simple oversight leads to an explosive situation and Bruce makes a split-second decision; his heroic impulse saves a life and leaves him apparently unscathed-his body absorbing a normally deadly dose of gamma radiation. Acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee turns his masterful eye to adapting the classic Marvel Comics character for the big screen. Setting out to faithfully transfer the Hulk comic book character from four-color paneled page to motion picture screen Lee combines all the elements of a blockbuster visual effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films. Staying true to the early subversive spirit of the Hulk as envisioned by its creators (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) while also tuning the tale to current dangerous times Lee presents a portrait of a man at war with himself and the world both a superhero and a monster a means of wish fulfillment and a nightmare...
