In October 1991 the fishing community of Gloucester Massachusetts experienced the full wrath of Mother Nature when a freak meteorological event produced the fiercest storm in modern history. Director Wolfgang Petersen has fashioned this heroic true story (as chronicled in Sebastian Junger's bestseller) into a star-laden blockbuster employing computer power to whip up the terrifying titular storm. George Clooney plays Billy Tyne captain of the Andrea Gail who has been plagued by bad luck at sea and is on a poor run of catches. Frustrated by the huge hauls of the Hannah Boden captained by Linda Greenlaw (Mary Ann Mastrantonio) Tyne decides to head back out to sea for the Flemish Cap a remote area renowned for its rich fishing prospects. He is joined by a number of his regular crew including Billy Shatford (Mark Wahlberg) Dale Murphy (John C Reilly) David Sullivan (William Fichtner) Alfred Pierre (Allen Payne) and Michael Moran (John Hawkes). Sure enough Tyne's luck changes for the better at the Flemish Cap and the Andrea Gail catches a full haul. Buoyed by the money that awaits them back home the crew sets off back to Gloucester but disturbing weather patterns hamper their progress and they soon find themselves battling against 100ft waves and 120mph winds that threaten to tear the boat apart. Includes the Novel and the HBO 20 minute documentary 'Creating the Storm' highlighting the groundbreaking special effects and story behind the movie.

  • Boogie Nights [Blu-ray] [2015] [Region Free]Boogie Nights | Blu Ray | (29/06/2015) from £24.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Even if the notorious 1970s porn-filmmaking milieu doesn't exactly turn you on, don't let it turn you off to this movie's extraordinary virtues, either. Boogie Nights is one of the key movies of the 1990s and among the most ambitious and exuberantly alive American movies in years. It's also the breakthrough for an amazing new director, whose dazzling kaleidoscopic style here recalls the Robert Altman of Nashville and the Martin Scorsese of Good Fellas. Although loosely based on the sleazy life and times of real-life porn legend John Holmes, at heart it's a classic Hollywood rise-and-fall fable: a naive, good-looking young busboy is discovered in a San Fernando Valley disco by a famous motion picture producer, becomes a hotshot movie star, lives the high life and then loses everything when he gets too big for his britches, succumbs to insobriety and is left behind by new times and new technology. Of course, it isn't exactly A Star Is Born or Singin' in the Rain. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (in only his second feature!) puts his own affectionately sardonic twist on the old showbiz biopic formula: the ambitious upstart changes his name and achieves stardom in porno films as "Dirk Diggler." Instead of drinking to excess, he snorts cocaine (the classic drug of 70s hedonism); and it's the coming of home video (rather than talkies) that helps to dash his big-screen dreams. As for the britches ... well, the controversial "money shot" explains everything. And the cast is one of the great ensembles of the 90s, including Oscar nominees Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore, Mark Wahlberg (who really can act--from the waist up, too!), Heather Graham (as Rollergirl), William H. Macy, John C. Reilly and Ricky Jay. --Jim Emerson

Gangs Of New York (Dir. Martin Scorsese) (2002): The seeds for revenge take place in 1846 when a battle is fought against the Irish and the ""native"" Americans over the five points area of New York City. Martin Scorsese's The Aviator is a lavish spectacle of a motion picture that harkens back to Hollywood's Golden Era in telling the story of Howard Hughes, one of 20th-century America's most pioneering and influential figures. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric billionaire, Scorsese's biopic concentrates on Hughes's life between the 1920s and the 1940s, when he made some of his most striking contributions to both the film and aviation industries. At only 25 years of age, Hughes directed the most expensive film ever made up to that point, Hell's Angels (1930), which Scorsese gleefully recreates here in all its sprawling, audacious glory. At the same time, he became known as an unabashed playboy, bedding the likes of Jean Harlow (played by Gwen Stefani), Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale), and Katherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett). In the mid-'30s, he turned his attention to the aviation industry, where he quickly became a world-renowned celebrity for shattering speed and distance records. He also continued to test the limits of flight technology, building bigger, faster, and stronger aircrafts. All the while, he struggled with an obsessive-compulsive mental disorder that sent him into a full-fledged tailspin after a near-fatal plane crash. The film concludes with Hughes being called to the Senate in '47 to defend himself against nefarious Senator Owen Brewster (Alan Alda), who accused Hughes of taking money from the United States government during wartime.* Please note: Martin Scorsese colour tinted some of his scenes to add authenticity to the era represented in the film and in keeping with Technicolor at that time. You may notice a lack of the colour green in some scenes as well. This was done deliberately and is not a fault of your DVD. Thank you.

Step Brothers: In Step Brothers Ferrell plays Brennan Huff a sporadically employed thirty-nine-year-old who lives with his mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen). Reilly plays Dale Doback a terminally unemployed forty-year-old who lives with his father Robert (Richard Jenkins). When Robert and Nancy marry and move in together Brennan and Dale are forced to live with each other as step brothers. As their narcissism and downright aggressive laziness threaten to tear the family apart these two middle-aged immature overgrown boys will orchestrate an insane elaborate plan to bring their parents back together. To pull it off they must form an unlikely bond that maybe just maybe will finally get them out of the house. Talladega Nights: A comedy film about a fictional NASCAR racing driver named Ricky Bobby. It has fun with stereotypes of the sort of people involved with NASCAR racing. Kicking & Screaming: Welcome to that cutthroat hyper-competitive do-or-die sport of...little-league soccer; a world where kids and their victory-crazed suburban parents find themselves on a high-stakes collision course-all in the name of good clean athletic fun. At the epicenter of this overzealous world is Phil Weston ((Will Ferrell) a gentle New-Agey vitamin salesman who by default ends up coaching his sweet 10-year-old son Sam's (Dylan McLaughlin) last-place team the Tigers. This would be tough enough for the super-supportive Phil who truly believes it's not whether you win or lose but if your soul gets nurtured. But when he's pitted against his gung-ho relentlessly competitive father Buck (Robert Duvall) who coaches his own young son Bucky's (Josh Hutcherson) top-ranked team the Gladiators a lifetime of putting up with Buck's overbearing ways finally takes its toll on Phil and well...the balls hit the field. Eventually as Phil and Buck go head-to-head for the soccer league championship the pair's past and constant rivalry spins wildly out of control forcing each to stop at nothing to ensure a winning season. This includes a now-maniacal Phil recruiting the world's best assistant coach the legendary Mike Ditka (played by none other than Mike Dikta) as well as two young Italian soccer prodigies who become the Tigers' secret weapons. Can father and son put their rocky past behind do what's best for their own children (and grandchild!) and realize that soccer is just a game? Not a chance! May the best coach win. Stranger Than Fiction: Stranger Than Fiction is an inventive comedy about a novelist (Emma Thompson) struggling to complete her latest and potentially finest book - she only has to find a way to kill off her main character Harold Crick and she'll be done. Little does she know that Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) is inexplicably alive and well in the real world and suddenly aware of her words. Fiction and reality collide when the bewildered and hilariously resistant Harold hears what she has in mind and realizes he must find a way to change her (and his) ending.
